Film Diary 2016 No.1
Me, Earl and The Dying Girl - 2015
It isn’t often that a film truly knocks me off my feet and leaves me with just a lot of feelings. There is a quite a short list and this is the latest entry. Me Earl and The Dying Girl is the third film by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon and is the story of Greg (Thomas Mann), a teenager just floating though his final year of high school. His final year radically alters course after he meets the titled dying girl( Oliva Cooke). Now that my sound like a classic shitty set up for a teen high school comedy, in a lesser script it would be but its filled with this amazing story and compelling characters. Cooke plays Rachel the dying girl perfectly. She is not a pixie dream girl, this is not a rom com, she plays this awkward girl going though one of the worst things a human can endure. Her chemistry with Mann is the core of this film. The friendship they form is so real it creates the core of the film. RJ Cyler plays Earl, Greg’s acquaintance and co-film maker+ and is great in the film. Now you would think a film about dying girl would be depressing but it’s not. The film is filled with hilarious scenes and stellar supporting performances from Nick Offerman, Connie Britton, Molly Shannon and Jon Bernthal. The film treats its subject matter with this honesty, I have never seen a high school done so well. And i haven’t even talked about the numerous film references scattered thoughout. It may look simple and cliche from the out side but this little film is heart felt, honest, funny and beautiful.
It gets 4/5 grown man tears.

Michael: What the hell is the matter with you?
Ryan: I don’t know, man, I worry about it sometimes.
Michael: Keeps you up at night?
Geoff: Hey! Knock it off.
Michael: What?! I just asked a question! [mumbles] You ever wonder why we’re here?
