will the "single, in-universe" change be revealed in the story at some point? (not asking what it is bc id assume that itd be better kept secret for now)
its actually not a secret!
(though i'm not sure if "in-universe" fully applies here...)
The swap is actually centered around the meteor landing points/where the characters actually live. For example, Jane landing in New York instead of Roxy and vice versa. Beta's still live where they had before, but with different parents, but Alpha's live in new places compared to canon!
Or, more simply... they have different upbringings due to being in different places with different people!

Basilisk
The apparatus grafted to its back and neck is to assist with respiration, as - while technically amphibious - the creature's ability to breathe air has been rendered inefficient somewhere along it's evolutionary tract. The tank fills itself with whatever it's submerged in, and thus they die off quickly in any areas with unclean water.
Artificial components located around the optic nerves allow the Basilisk to emit a form of psionic wave by opening its eyes, capable of paralyzing the muscles of those who stare back. The activation of this ability quickly causes migranes, however, and thus they are known to only open their eyes as much as necessary.
