ARYA STARK APPRECIATION MONTH Day 27: historical/mythological/fairytale parallels
Morana (Marzanna, Marena, Mara) is the pagan Slavic goddess of winter, death, harvest, witchcraft, and nightmares. According to the myth, Morana is the daughter of the spring goddess Lada and her husband, the god Svarog. She is recognized as the patroness of the underworld and symbolizes the end of the physical life of mortals on Earth. She unites both winter and death along with the rebirth of nature and fertility. It can be said that Morana represents various stages of transitions in human life.

Skip Google for Research
As Google has worked to overtake the internet, its search algorithm has not just gotten worse.  It has been designed to prioritize advertisers and popular pages often times excluding pages and content that better matches your search terms
As a writer in need of information for my stories, I find this unacceptable.  As a proponent of availability of information so the populace can actually educate itself, it is unforgivable.
Below is a concise list of useful research sites compiled by Edward Clark over on Facebook. I was familiar with some, but not all of these.
Google is so powerful that it “hides” other search systems from us. We just don’t know the existence of most of them. Meanwhile, there are still a huge number of excellent searchers in the world who specialize in books, science, other smart information. Keep a list of sites you never heard of.
www.refseek.com - Academic Resource Search. More than a billion sources: encyclopedia, monographies, magazines.
www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.
https://link.springer.com - access to more than 10 million scientific documents: books, articles, research protocols.
www.bioline.org.br is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries.
http://repec.org - volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science.
www.science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.
www.pdfdrive.com is the largest website for free download of books in PDF format. Claiming over 225 million names.
www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free

DO NOT VOLUNTEER TO HOST RANDOM STRANGERS. DO NOT AGREE TO BE HOSTED BY A RANDOM STRANGER.
DO NOT PUBLICLY POST THAT YOUR HOUSE WILL BE AN ABORTION SAVE HAVEN. OFFICIAL NETWORKS TO DO THIS ALREADY EXIST, NETWORKS THAT HAVE THE ABILITY TO BACKGROUND CHECK, AND SHIELD THEIR VOLUNTEERS FROM LAW ENFORCEMENT.
Even IF you personally know every person you’re offering this to and know with 100% certainty that they’re legit: YOU HAVE JUST CREATED A POTENTIALLY LEGALLY DAMNING DIGITAL PAPER TRAIL.
I know how obnoxious this is to say, but please: reblog this. I see these posts a lot, and I know most of you have good intentions. But these unoffical auntie networks are dangerous, both for those trying to help, and those seeking help. Law enforcement sees you. Violent anti-abortion extremists see you.

not to be an old cranky leftist but going forward i think those of us who live in the us need to remember a protest is not a group powerwalk to register polite disapproval with those in power
a protest is an implied threat. a protest says there are a lot of us, and we do not like what you’re doing. we are giving you a chance to course correct before we take things to the next level.
if there’s no shared commitment to the potential of moving to that next level: a protest is useless and essentially just public performance art.

bran stark appreciation month 2022 →  day 5: bravest moments
“There is no shame in that. A lord must protect his smallfolk. Cruel places breed cruel peoples, Bran, remember that as you deal with these ironmen. Your lord father did what he could to gentle Theon, but I fear it was too little and too late.” *** A good lord protects his people, he reminded himself. “I’ve yielded Winterfell to Theon.”

bran stark appreciation month 2022 →  day 8: summer
These woods belonged to them, the snowy slopes and stony hills, the great green pines and the golden leaf oaks, the rushing streams and blue lakes fringed with fingers of white frost. But his sister had left the wilds, to walk in the halls of man-rock where other hunters ruled, and once within those halls it was hard to find the path back out. The wolf prince remembered.

just saw a post about Arya's endgame. it was about her having the same end as in the show i never watched. and funnily enough, in the comments they mentioned it was odd for a 12 year old with close to no experience or training in sailing a ship (except her time with denyo, which was basic and at most would turn her into a cabin girl) to just become a captain all of a sudden. so they proposed at the end she starts training and learning from zero. like... how is that an endgame? as if she already hasn't had any kind of training in her story, which she has, and it is aiming to an end far from a sailing life. you could say they admitted she had to drop all her past training and start anew. come on guys they literally proved there's nothing in her story that leads to that ending so she has to leave her current path and start another one from Point Zero aka change her whole storyline for that endgame to make sense.

With the overturning of Roe v. Wade, I need to let people know how dangerous the healthcare privacy climate is now. As someone that works with PHI (protected health information) I want to stress that HIPAA (the law that prevents your health data from being shared) does not apply to healthcare apps. These are incredibly dangerous to use, not only because law enforcement can procure a subpoena to access this information, but because these apps can sell your health data to any third party—potentially anti-abortion activists. Anyone with a uterus should delete not only period trackers, but mental health apps, because if you have a miscarriage or seek an abortion in a state that outlaws it, your mental health history can be used against you.
I would also discourage people from using online therapy apps like BetterHelp and Talkspace. Though BetterHelp says they are HIPAA compliant, that is a lie. They have shared data with Facebook. Their most recent privacy policy update says “We may share your information in connection with an asset sale, merger, bankruptcy, or other business transaction.” Any data breach could put your information at risk. Any health app could suddenly decide to change their privacy policies without notice.
Most responsible clinicians put your health data under (many times literally) lock and key. PHI software like Epic or Cerner have numerous failsafes to prevent data leaks. This is not the case for apps. BetterHelp and healthcare apps in general do not care about this. They only care about money. Do not trust any app or healthcare provider that operates strictly online. And for your own sake, use a VPN if you’re searching for abortion providers or advice.

In a concurring opinion, Justice Thomas wrote that the court should "reconsider" rulings on contraception, same-sex relationships, and same-sex marriage”
"And no one should be confident that this majority is done with its work. The right Roe and Casey recognized does not stand alone," the three justices wrote. "To the contrary, the Court has linked it for decades to other settled freedoms involving bodily integrity, familial relationships, and procreation."

"Quaithe?"
The woman stood still as a statue, resting underneath a lemon tree glazed with ice and branches piled with snow, the yellow fruit frozen in place on their branches. The wind picked up sprays of snowfrost around her, but her hooded robe was still immaculate, untouched. She lifted her head slightly. Her wooden mask assumed the look of frosted starlight this time, her eyes in the moonlit dark shiny and unreadable.
"You must follow the snow, beyond the winter's edge." Her voice was quiet, yet as loud as a shout, wafting and echoing over whips of wind. When Dany reached her, Quaithe reached out and touched her arm, guiding her forward.
"Where are you taking me?" Dany asked her. The tingle that she remembered where she touched her before was there once more, warm and cold where Quaithe's fingers rested on her skin. "Where does this dream lead?"
"To your destiny, Daenerys Targaryen," she replied after a time. "Daughter of fire. Bride of ice."
"Bride of ice?" She squinted against the weather. I was called bride of fire at the House of the Undying, she remembered, thinking of the blue flower encased in ice. Why the change? Or are both true? "What is it you seek of me?"
The masked woman replied with silence, allowing the wind to speak for her.
The storm picked up then, obscuring her view just a few feet in front of her, and in the blink of an eye, the hand on her arm was gone, as was its owner.
Dany called for Quaithe, but she could no longer find nor sense her. She pressed on, her feet crunching in knee-deep snow, yet she could not feel the cold.
Snow began to fall, faster than ashflakes rising like embers from burning parchment. Snow and gusts of wind lashed bitterly at her, dishevelling her silver-kissed hair, flakes melting upon her cheeks and a few even in her eyes. She blinked but felt nothing.
Still she could not feel the cold.
Her feet brought her forward until the snow and the wind abruptly ceased, seemingly originating from a single point in the middle of the frozen lake.
In the centre she found a girl. Two pairs of eyes opened as if from slumber, then in the darkness beyond she felt the eyes of hundreds, opening as the girl's had, studying her with an eerie stillness. A school of fish swam underneath the ice, shimmery silver-scaled bodies lined in formation to the girl, pooling underneath her feet, a single rose tucked behind her ear, some petals blacker than midnight, others whiter than sunlight.
An ethereal halo like the spirit of a wolf concealed her face half in shadow. Short brown hair curled upon her brow, at the nape of her neck, her brow relaxed, her left hand filled with a sword as skinny as she was.
She is my destiny? Dany wondered, taking another measured step on the frozen lake.
Yes. Your destiny, bride of ice, the voice echoed everywhere and nowhere, the source unable to be found. Her blood calls to your own.
But before she could reach her, the child-woman threw back her head and howled, and suddenly she heard the answering roar of her children above her, the music so deep and proud and beautiful that it settled deep in Dany's bones and made her shiver.
