What I enjoyed:

The fic opens with Draco, a sex worker, answering to his newest client: Harry. He shows up at Grimmauld Place, they negotiate the terms, and then Draco goes right to work, thus kicking them off on a story that spans multiple years of the messy life they end up sharing.

Everyone is a mess, Draco especially. I love him when he’s messy and feisty, refusing to go down without a fight. He’s dealing with immense amounts of unresolved PTSD from the war. He and Harry both explore their individual needs through BDSM: Draco’s searching for control, Harry a situation to give it up in. Feelings get involved, of course, and my heart aches for Draco going so damn long in a cycle of not believing Harry could really want him. And, if he does, that want will eventually dry up.

Harry is a trooper, though. He sticks out Draco’s worst moments and attributes. He moves into Malfoy Manor. He becomes step-father to Scorpius. Speaking of Scorpius, I liked how the fic explored Draco’s delayed attachment and ability to bond with his son. It feels like another ‘ugly truth’, and so honest in regards to how damaged Draco is. When he sorts himself out and starts to bond with Scorpius, it feels so rewarding. And then Andromeda and Teddy also move into the manor, so of course Teddy is another guaranteed joy as Draco and Harry fight and fuck their way through this turbulent period of their lives. I was extremely satisfied with how the colloquial comfort balances out the hurt.

I think the ultimate proof that there is a classist element in James and Sirius’s bullying of Snape is that James jumps on Snape when Snape says he wanted to be sorted in Slytherin, thus inagurating their hatred of each other. However, when Sirius says that all of his family was in Slytherin, James only says “and here I thought you were alright” but proceeded to allow Sirius into joining him to make fun of Snape and Lily.

Both Snape and Sirius reveal a connection to Slytherin, and James offers condemnation in both cases, but his attitude towards Sirius was already markedly different. Given that Sirius hadn’t yet the chance to disavow Slytherin, James had no way of knowing Sirius’s complicated relationship with his own family. Therefore, James’s antipathy towards Snape surpassed the issue of House rivalry and has to be explained by Snape’s aspect and demeanour - the poor, neglected kid from whom James so clearly differed.
