Yes you can have dogs and hardwood floor. I have had so many people ask me that over the last week at the home show. Yes wood can scratch, some species are worse than others. White oak and hickory are 2 of the hardest domestic species. Also a character grade floor will help hide any dings. This floor is a natural grade rift and quarter sawn white oak and we hand scraped it. This is definitely one of your best options for pets and heavy traffic. I think winter is done teasing us with the warm start. It's a cold week in PA! the snow finally stopped at the day and the sun came out. When it's this cold and lumber is outside it is not air drying. All the water is frozen. Some companies say that they let their lumber air-dry for so many months and it makes the lumber better. This can sit outside and "air dry" for the next 3 months in this weather and the lumber won't be any drier before we put it into the dry kiln.
