It would be convenient to say that maybe Rory had secretly loved Cole all along. He felt the fluttering of infatuation, now, when he remembered them talking into the night, when he thought about doing that with him now, about the fact that he was going to spend the night here. And then he thought that if he typed that, perhaps that would be it. Rory would be scared of him. He wouldn’t speak to him again. Or he would finally retreat beyond seeing him a person. He would be a subject. A special case. If Rory knew how much he hated himself, or knew how much he loved him. The two-headed extreme of his rabid feelings. And Cole didn’t know if he should let him see as soon as possible, to tear away this illusion of comfort quickly and all at once, or if he should keep it hidden, and let himself savour the moments when this made him happy.
