you hadn’t realized you’d been falling asleep , and rub sleepily at your brown eyes , with closed fists . ‘ okay , but TELL OUR MOMS , i don’t want them to worry . ’ dad won’t be happy , but that’s a problem for tomorrow’s riley . you move to nestle your head between his neck and shoulder , sighing softly from the feeling of safety and warmth .
"I'll let them know." And he did, he had his phone in his hand and he sent them both a text before he just shut the sound off and wordlessly dropped it onto the bed beside her. It was getting late and he knew they both needed to sleep, besides, what kinda guy would he be if he let her walk home alone in the dark?

His eyes aren't even on her anymore. She answered the question, yeah. But she didn't answer the one he needed her to. But she didn't have to, she didn't need to say it out loud for him to get the picture. Always her best friend.
"You know that's not what I meant." He's hestitating on even continuing, his head turning to look over his shoulder, wondering how easy it'd be to make a clean get away. "Just nevermind."

"We can’t do this anymore?" He watched her from where he was standing, trying to figure out why exactly she was saying that, but he knew. He wasn’t a good fit for her. He skipped school more often than not. He only started showing up again because of her. She was right in saying that, but why did it hurt so damn much then? He was quiet, the wheels in his head turning. "I guess I’ll leave then.”

If Riley took a good look at him she would see a split second pain go through his eyes. His smile dropping and turning into a small frown. Yeah, that was a thing still, wasn't it? He should have stopped and thought about it. His hand came up to rub the side of his neck before he just gave her a small grin. She was putting him on the same level as her dad, guess that wasn't too bad. His heart clenched and he just shook his head, she kissed his cheek and he stayed quiet.
"Nah, don't worry about it, Riley." It wasn't that he wanted a valentine all that much, he just wanted to spend the day with her. Their time had been cut down and it was driving him a little crazy.

He didn't want him to be the one for her. The thought of it killed him. He didn't want to deal with it. He shouldn't have even showed up. He should have just went to that stupid party he got invited to. There was a clear pain in his eyes, one that couldn't exactly be missed. "Okay...if that's what you want. If that's what you want to believe." He gave in. He couldn't fight with her. What was the point?
He didn't want to force Riley to pick between the two of them. He just wanted—he just didn't want to be shoved to the side. He had to let go, didn't he? "Just forget I showed up here, alright? I'm glad you had a good time. I'm gonna go." His voice sounded so void of any actual feeling. As if it was just a standard response, a defensive wall going up.

What kind of question was that? ( "Do you want to be with me?" ) Of course, he wanted to be with her. He wouldn't have fought so hard if he didn't. His jaw went slack for a moment, no this wasn't right. Why was she asking this all of a sudden? He felt panic start to set in, his heart lurching forward in his chest before it just dropped. Maybe this was a test, a test to see if he was willing to do something. ( What something? ) Swallowing the lump in his throat, his eyes moved away from her for a few seconds. He had to say something. Say anything. He was screaming at himself on the inside to just speak. "You should know the answer to that." His voice came out softer than he would have liked it to. His weight shifting from one foot to the other. "Why? Riley, I'm not a mind reader. What answer do you want me to say?" He couldn't risk their friendship. Not on a maybe that could turn out to be a no and destroy them.

A groan finally left him as he set his paint brush down. It was clear, she won. She won! He rubbed his face with one of his hands before he moved to grab his jacket. He couldn't believe this. "Fine, I'm going to get the ice cream you wanted. Will you please rinse out my paint brush?" He tugged his jean jacket on, leaning down to kiss her temple while he did so before he was grabbing his keys and his wallet. Pregnant Riley, he swore to god that he'd be lucky if he got anything done in the next nine months. But, it wouldn't be such a bad thing. He smiled to himself while he watched his fiance and he let out a soft breath. Yeah, it wasn't such a bad thing.

He was sitting there beside the fire, it had been the bright idea that hey, teenagers and fire really mixed well. His eyes focused on it before he looked over towards Riley, unsure of what to really say. They both were going through things and maybe he hadn't been the best but he was trying. So, he shifted on his log and grumbled to himself for a split second before he leaned over and tried to to figure out what to say. Saturday night and it seemed almost hopeless that he could say anything at all. So he said what just came to him. "I'm on your side, forever and always. Just take it easy and we can figure it all out."
