Let’s talk about the W.I.T.C.H

I was a HUGE fan of the W.I.T.C.H comics when I was a kid, and I think they are massively underrated, as they did a lot of things right that few media works have managed to do, at least for me. And I think a big part of that was having 5 main relatable female caracters, with varied and distinguished personalities. One think I could show you that diversity and uniqueness that makes them relatable is vía their families, so here we go (also try to look at the physique and fashion sense of each one, and you’ll see something that’s not so common in these types of magical girl groups: diversity)

•Wil Vandom

Will is a newcomer to the city of Hesthersfield, where the story takes place. She lives with her single mother and her ferret called literally “Ferret” in an apartment in the city center. They argue a lot, but they know they only have each other, and they are for each other during tough times, like when Will’s abusive father reappears in their life.

•Irma Lair:

Irma probably has the most stereotipically “american” family, living with her parents, little brother and turtle, “Lettuce” in a house in the suburbs. But is revealed that Irma’s “mother”, Anna, is really her step-mother. And, unlike the stereotipically “evil step-mother” she is really caring and it’s the closest member of the family to Irma. Also in the photo it doesn’t show well, but Irma is usually depicted as having slightly darker skin than the other white W.I.T.C.H, so I’ve always thought of her as latina.

•Taranee Cook:

Taranee’s family is probably the most unique I think. They also live in the suburbs, but in a house that reminded me of the ones that are in desert areas like in Arizona or California. Her mom is asian, and her father black, which makes with a racial mix that isn’t depicted much. Her big brother Peter is the broest of bros, and she and him are really close. But her mother, the judge Theresa Cook, is THAT type of really strict and lawful parent, which makes Taranee really distanced from her. Also, there’s a really big spoiler that makes this family more interesting, the ones that have read the books know what I’m talking about.

•Cornelia Hale:

Cornelia is your typical upper-class family, they live in an apartment inside a private complex, and they seem like the perfect family. Also they have a cat that’s not in the photo called Napoleon. But, although Cornelia does get along with her father and (for the most part) with her little sister (at least more than Irma with her brother), she and her mother are too similarly hot-headed and prideful, so they are always fighting and have build a big barrier between the both of them.

•Hay Lin:

Hay Lin is an only child of asian parents living with them and her grandma on top of the restaurant her parents have (I believe it was called “The Silver Dragon”?). She actually is the one that least interacts with her parents, and they are nearly always working, which has give her a lot of alone time (that’s probably why she is so creative and imaginative) and also really close to her grandma Yan Lin.

And that’s it! As you can see, no family is the same, and I think they are all really realistic.
