Lorelai and Luke's songs on The Tortured Poets Department: Down Bad

This song is how Lorelai feels after their first (season 5) breakup.

'I might just not get up'

And she was definitely thinking fuck it if I can't have him.

'My same old town, that somehow feels so hollow now...' is obviously about them. (even the use of the word hollow). When they break up, all the old joys of Stars Hollow are ruined for the both of them.

The song is about the idea that the other person can break off your relationship without your permission and just. Leave you loveless. Take it away from you. They just make that decision and it happens even when it's not what you want. Lorelai felt that way in the first breakup, and Luke in the second.

'how dare you say that it's...' (this line is soul-destroying) brings this to mind:

and how dare you think it's romantic leaving me safe and stranded??!! (loving the use of the word safe here. like, no longer being in a relationship is relatively safe, risk-free. but it's a very ironic kind of safe. because you're also stranded, albeit in a place where nothing can hurt you.)

Lorelai and Luke's songs on The Tortured Poets Department: My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys

To relate this song to them you have to be viewing the breakup from Lorelai's perspective, and how she felt Luke was actively destroying their perfect relationship after the entrance of April. It's all about the bitter irony of the idea that the relationship was so good that it had to be wrecked.

it fit too right, puzzle pieces in the dead of night, should've known it was a matter of time...

I knew too much, there was danger in the heat of my touch, he saw forever so he smashed it up...

Everything seemed to be going well, it made no sense that Luke would block her out and neglect her like he did - almost the only plausible explanation is sabotage.

And 'there was a litany of reasons why we could've played for keeps this time.' Luke was supposed to be the one, the one who lasted, unlike Lorelai's previous partners. And there was no logical reason why he shouldn't be. The whole song is anger at the breaking down of a relationship that should've worked. That was working.

Because Luke was different. 'He was my best friend... I felt more when we played pretend than with all the Kens, cos he took me out of my box...' So true. Luke understood Lorelai on another level. He was the only boyfriend who was her best friend too. And their love was a totally different feeling for her.

And the last line kills me. 'Told me I'm better off... but I'm not.' Just thinking about when Luke said this (literally gaslighting himself)

and he said she was better off with Christopher, so she went off to be better off with Christopher, but she was definitely not actually better off with Christopher.

A quote from Taylor literally explains why this song is for them: “An American town where the American Dream you thought would happen to you didn’t... You ended up not with the person you loved and now you have to just live with that every day, wondering what would’ve been, maybe seeing them out.”

They are that American town couple. 'run into you sometimes, ask about the weather', 'turned into good neighbours' -

They break up but their lives are still parallel, and it's impossible to go about their lives as they used to without being reminded of the routines that have been disrupted and the places that have been tainted by the ruin of their relationship. How can they just go back to being good neighbours? The thing is that they don't really, Lorelai won't set foot inside Luke's, and their whole small-town lives are irrevocably changed.

Then there's this line in the bridge: 'buy the car you want but it won't start up til I touch touch touch you...' It reminds me so much of when Luke tells Lorelai his life doesn't feel real without her. Like. He can try to get what he wants but things aren't real, the car won't start, not without her. AHHH

I personally think Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus was a very bad title choice. The line could stay I guess, though I don’t love it, but i need to give the song a different name because i feel like it’s blockading my appreciation. Anyone have good title ideas? I can’t find another lyric that really sounds good - maybe some part of ‘will i always wonder?’ But i feel more that the song deserves a name that isn’t in the lyrics (does Taylor ever do that?).
