Hello! You may know me as @iikubos on twitter! For my journalism final, I did a multimedia project on Hello! Project and the impacts of COVID-19 on the fan experience. Below is the article component I put together based on responses to a google forms survey I put up (I am once again very grateful for all the replies)! A few people have expressed interest in reading it, so I am posting it here. As you will see, I did quote a few people, but the main intent of the survey was to get a general sense of how fans from overseas were feeling! I hope I did a good job representing our experience to non-idol fans.
Fans Say “Hello” to New Pandemic Norms
When COVID-19 began sweeping across the globe, entertainment industries slowed to an eventual halt as they had no way to deal with the virus. This meant studios shutting down, television programs halting production and movie theaters closing their doors to the public. While the world seemed to come to a stop, there was one group of performers that many didn’t consider: Japanese idols.
The Japanese idol industry, filled with young men and women performing upbeat tunes in color-coded outfits, faced various problems as the threat of COVID-19 made their usual activities unsafe. Like other musical acts around the world, these performers rely on concerts and live shows to make money. But Japanese idols also rely heavily on fan interaction to maintain their fanbases, and fans often can buy CDs or other merchandise for the ability to meet their favorite performers. With a virus that spreads as easily as COVID-19, the usual events consisting of shaking hands or high fives were out of the question.
Hello! Project, often referred to as “H!P,” was one of the many collections of idols in Japan that had no choice but to adapt to changing times. Since 1998, the company has gained a following of both native Japanese and international fans who do their best to enjoy following their activities from home. Hello! Project currently has six active groups: Morning Musume’22, ANGERME, Juice=Juice, Tsubaki Factory, BEYOOOOONDS and OCHA NORMA. The company also maintains a number of trainees who hope to debut in one of these groups or perhaps be included in a brand-new unit.
Fans from outside of Japan have discovered these idols through a variety of ways, such as YouTube videos, anime, online forums and, of course, other fans. These fans take to social media sites and tend to use aliases online and when interacting with other fans in-person for the sake of privacy.
A 22-year-old fan from Chile who goes by the name Cam says said that she found Hello! Project through anime endings such as “Inazuma Eleven.” The endings for “Inazuma Eleven” were done by the now disbanded group Berryz Koubou. Cam explained that the music videos aired during commercial breaks on a Chilean TV channel dedicated to anime.
Although fans not living in Japan have always found ways to enjoy the performers they like through things like social media, YouTube and online blogs, COVID-19 caused some big changes for the company that has managed to even impact fans who have never set foot on Japan’s shores.
For international fans, an entire new world of interaction opened up to them. Prior to the pandemic, Hello! Project, like many other idol groups, frequently held events that allowed fans to meet their favorite members face to face and speak with them for a limited time. These events, usually dubbed “handshake events,” are a huge selling point. Although there are a few different types, both full group handshake events and individual ones pass quickly, with each fan having mere seconds to get their thoughts across before having to step aside so the next person in line can have a go.
Minmin, a 27-year-old fan from Germany, has been to several handshake events, but finds the solo ones with individual members to be the best. “They really think about the questions you ask. I had four handshakes with my oshi on the same day and even years after I remember them vividly.” She went on to describe her experience with her favorite member, saying “My oshi had the biggest smile when she started recognizing me and I think that broke me for life. I cried for one hour straight. The following days I kept tearing up on and off, because the entire experience was just the highest concentration of happiness I’ve ever experienced, with a little sorrow that I might never be able to experience it again.”
For a time, this kind of interaction was impossible for fans outside of Japan. Then, in late 2020, companies began partnering with these two businesses: WithLIVE and Limited Stand. WithLIVE serves as an online meet-and-greet service, where fans can buy and schedule short video calls with their favorite artists. Limited Stand, or Limista, instead allows for fans to purchase a personalized autograph from the artists they love, broadcast live on YouTube. Both options are bundled with two or three editions of whatever release the artist is promoting, so they can keep their sales up. Although these services don’t ship overseas, fans have made use of proxy services such as Tenso to get in on the fun. With Tenso and other proxy services, products ordered from sites that do not ship outside of Japan can be sent to a warehouse that will then ship the product to the customer overseas.
Afterwards, fans often discuss their experience online on sites like Twitter, and sometimes post screenshots of their personalized autographs or post “reports” with transcripts of their video calls.
Cam considers this a positive change, saying that although it’s a bit hard due to the lengthy sign-up process and frequent issues signing into the participating websites, she finds the new opportunities given to fans to be overall a good thing.
A 21-year-old fan from the United States, who prefers to be referred to as Gi thought her WithLIVE experience was wonderful. “I definitely would recommend it to others,” she said. “I think it’s a chance to realize how lovely the fan-interaction aspect of following idols is. Making that personal connection with your oshi or just a member you really like or are interested in is such a special experience.”
The pandemic didn’t only bring positive changes within Hello! Project. A Taiwanese fan who prefers to be called Shizuna described grievances that many fans agree with. “Single and album releases decreased by a long shot compared to previous years; shipping costs increased; packages take longer to arrive; all groups in H!P fell to 6-month release schedule and BEYOOOOONDS – a new group that debut[ed] in 2019 – lost their momentum from their strong debut, which I am so very bitter about. The decline in releases and lack of alternative options for streaming concerts or events is insane when it has been done by other idol management companies,” Shizuna said.
Shizuna’s complaints aren’t foreign to this fanbase, which often complains of the lack of releases. In 2020, Hello! Project only saw nine releases, 10 fewer than the previous year. On top of that, a lack of overseas shipping options made buying from other countries an even heavier burden, and groups like BEYOOOOONDS seemed to slow to a stop and did not release any new music in 2020, which angered fans who had excitedly watched their strong debut just a year prior. In addition, Hello! Project isn’t exactly known for being the first to hop on trends: the members only began getting permission to open Instagram accounts in 2019.
Gi also commented on the lack of releases. “As a BEYOOOOONDS fan primarily, it was really disappointing to feel like H!P gave up on them for almost two years just because their debut timing ended up being unfortunately close to the pandemic and they didn’t want to try to find alternative ways to get their name out there that wasn’t in person events. The girls [BEYOOOOONDS] are so passionate and dedicated to their group, so it was sad to feel that company did not have their back when it came to something out of their control.”
Gi went on to comment on production value, stating that “Efforts in stage production for concerts have gone down so much to the point that their concert stage design involves almost nothing but a plain black stage.”
This perceived lower production value is not the only thing lacking in concert venues. One of the most common complaints is the lack of cheering. Anyone who has gone to a Japanese idol concert or even has watched clips from performances online can recognize the timed chants and in-sync chanting of the performer’s name after a solo line. It’s a unique experience both for the audience members who participate in waving their brightly-lit glow sticks to the tune of each song, and for the young women on stage who can hear thousands of people cheer for them, and in turn feed off that energy to create a memorable experience filled to the brim with audience interaction. It’s one of the many ways fans interact with their “oshi,” or “favorite member.”
In the first few months of 2020, Hello! Project began implementing restrictions, one of these being that audience members were not to chant or cheer during performances due to risk of spreading the virus. COVID-19 meant that groups like Kobushi Factory, whose members had made the decision to go their separate ways prior to the pandemic, held its final concert before disbandment to an empty venue. Fans instead were able to watch via livestreams and movie theater viewings. On top of that, performances for various concert tours were cancelled, and the usual summer concert series featuring all of the groups was changed to consist of solo performances where the girls would sing ballads.
An America-based fan who chooses to go by the name of Tezra said, “The only thing that truly frustrates me is the lack of fan chants during concerts. I think fan chants play such a big part in idol concerts, so it just doesn’t feel like an idol concert anymore without them.” This sentiment is often echoed in fan communities, as fans are disappointed that newer members haven’t experienced what’s considered such an integral part of the experience by many.
Rebecca, a 28-year-old American, lived in Japan for five years and was able to attend concerts and events during that time. She described concerts as “fun, energizing, and lively.” She described the experience during the pandemic less favorably due to the lack of engagement. “I feel like a passive spectator instead of an engaged fan.”
Passionate supporters cite various reasons why they’re drawn to Hello! Project: performance, charisma, music and the members’ personalities are just a few.
“People often assume that because I like H!P, I must like all idol music too. But the truth is, I don’t listen to other idol groups,” Tezra said. “I only listen to H!P’s music exclusively. The one thing that makes H!P different from most other idol groups is the beat in their songs. Most idol songs are composed in 8-beat, but H!P’s songs are 16-beat long. Also, because idol groups often sing all at once, it can be hard to differentiate between different voices and their voices can sound flat. In contrast, H!P uses their artists’ vocals creatively to add rhythm, and style to their songs—creating a richer sound than many other idol groups.”
Looking forward to the future, fans gather on social media to discuss their wish lists, such as a more consistent release pace, better access to content and more acknowledgement of overseas fans.
Ultimately, fans are hoping for WithLIVE and Limista to remain even when in-person events are back in full force, something that the company has not commented on at this time.
Despite the unfortunate changes made to adapt to a pandemic that hasn’t died out just yet, there are some changes that shine like beacons of hope signaling a brighter future for a fanbase separated by the sea.

Hello!
This is BEYOOOOONDS/CHICA#TETSU’s
Eguchi Saya 👑 💗
Thank you for the likes and comments yesterday too 😊
There are many people with cats and dogs! They’re cute, right?  🐶💓
A dog person? Or a cat person?
If I have to choose, I guess I’m more of a dog person🐩🐾
But I like cats 🐈
Ah, It’s not cat paws, but it’s cat legged furniture 💗
We have a lot of cat legged furniture, but the piano is also cat legged and it’s Saya’s treasure ✨
When Saya was little, I was really shy and really slow paced 😅
That’s why Mama had me learn dance and piano when I was young to help my shyness and help my pace  💃🎹
Thanks to that, I came to love dance and piano  💗
Now, I can keep up with everyone’s pace! ☺️👍🏻
Probably.....
It takes a long time to write a blog.....
It’s still only day three so I’m not used to it, but soon I’ll be able to write it more easily soon
Probably...

Eguchi Saya 👑 💗
Thank you for the likes and comments yesterday too 😊
While I read the comments, I was so happy that I kept nodding at my phone 😂 lol
Today, I’ll talk about the team singing competitions  🎵
Haga Akane-san from Morning Musume’18, Yamagishi Riko-san from Tsubaki Factory, Shimakura Rika-san and Eguchi Saya from CHICA#TETSU, as the unit named “FRESH” got to perform “ Watashi no Miryoku ni Kizukanai Donkan na Hito”  🎤
We thought about the lyrics while practicing how to sing them!
Since this song is cute and I love it, I was happy when it was decided that we’d perform it ❤❤
I was really nervous in front of the main building, but the four of us went “Ei Ei Oh ー!” and our spirits were raised  😆👍🏻
After that, with Hagane Akane-chan and Yamagishi Riko-san hugged me tightly 💗(´。> ﹏ <。`)
And and!
Ikuta Erina-san also hugged me tightly  💗( இ﹏இ )
I was so happy and my nervousness went away, and I felt like I was in a flower garden 🌸 (っ。•o•。c)

We were able to sing together as FRESH, I was taught various things ✏️
I’ll do my best to keep growing 😄

♡Saya’s Moved(´•̥ ω •̥` )♡ Eguchi Saya
Good evening!
This is BEYOOOOONDS/CHICA#TETSU’s
Eguchi Saya 💗
Yesterday for the first blog, I’m sorry that I couldn’t write well because I was nervous. . .  💦
I got lots of likes and comments from everyone, truly thank you very much! ❤
I was so very happy that my tears wouldn’t stop falling and my handkerchief became soaked. . . . . .
I didn’t get soaked. . . . . 😝 That’s how happy I was 💖
Today, the 20th and 21st, Hello! Fes was held. I’d like to talk about my thoughts about SATOYAMA & SATOUMI 🌟
At Hello! Fes 2018, BEYOOOOONDS delivered their new song!!!
It connects to “Megane no Otoko no Ko”‘s story!
This time the song has skits before and during the song, so it’s very comical and interesting!
Also!!
The role of the mystery character too, you can understand like “Ah! So it was like that!”  😆
Until now, there are productions that still haven’t been scene and parts where everyone can sing with us. . . . . .
Because it’s very interesting and there are many places to show it, by all means, I’d like for everyone to see 👀✨
Tumblr media
Ame no Mori Kawa Umi’s Kiyono Momohime-san 🍑
I took a picture with!📷
As BEYOOOOONDS, we’ll be working together from now on so I’m very happy 💗
Also!
In Morning Musume’18′s Premium “Egao no Kimi wa Taiyo sa”
In Angerme’s Premium “Otome no Gyakushuu”
We were able to perform covers.
Since I love both of these songs and we were able to sing them, I’m very happy 😍
I was inspired seeing my Senpai’s performances, so from here on out Saya will also work on her singing and dancing so I can stand a big stage. I’ll do my best!!
It was my second time in SATOYAMA & SATOUMI which I like to participate in. This time there were lots of Kumagaya specialties. . . . .
In particular, the gokabou was very delicious 😋
For Saya, Nyazane’s goods, Kumasan’s doll, and accessories were on sale
I was like, “I want it!” and  thought many many things!
Once I found out my beloved tapioca was being sold, I really wanted to drink it. .
lol
Above all else, I got to talk to everyone a lot. It was fun💓
“I’m cheering for you” and “Do your best!” were told to me, I’m really happy 💗
Truly, thank you very much!
I’ll do my best more and more! Is what I thought ☺️
