Gather 'round kids, time for a story...
Regardless of what you think... it can be worse.
Take it from me, an argentinian girl that has a home-office job in a company in USA. The 3rd interpretation company in less than 3 years. Now I get paid US$7.50/hr. When I started I was getting US$3.50 and later US$4 per hour. Too little? Well that happens when you are an overseas worker.
We are cheaper because most of us come from "3rd world countries" so there is NO WAY we can aspire to get paid as much as someone in USA. My job (over the phone interpreter) in USA gets paid between $14 and $25 the hour... I get paid 7.50! I fully understand those that complain that they can't get a job because we are chosen because we are cheaper. It is unfair to them... but it is also unfair that remote work is a new way of slavery. We get paid cents on the dollar because the companies know that one dollar is a lot of money in our countries and exploit it.
And just to be clear... I hate my job. But I support my family, so I have to suck it up because those $500 and something (and now about $800 -depending of how many hours I get to work-) keep our heads out of the water.
I am a Creative. Both because I studied Advertising to be a Creative and because I actually love to create stories and even things!
My idea was to get a job, get some money and use my spare time for what I like to do (writing, painting, making videos for Youtube to try and get followers that might support my work) but I am just SO TIRED.
Worst of all, by switching from one company to another this month we had to manage with just $300 for the entire month and actually mom had to ask for a small loan offered by a virtual wallet to try and strech what we had. Now we are officially with $0 and probably I'll get paid by the 29th/30th.
So I tried the "side hustle" thing... and what nobody ever tells you is that to get good at it you have to work pretty much 8hrs a day or more to get a reputation and then get to the "sweet spot" where you allegedly "make money while you sleep". Something quite impossible when you have a steady job and live in a country that is in a neverending economical crisis that requires you to get more money as soon as possible.
I am no longer working 8hrs a day. I endured it for a year and a half, my 2nd company asked me to work 6hrs because there was a low in the call volume and now I work the hours that I might get through the Deputy app (I aim for 6hrs but I'm able to grab about 4 or 5 a day because as soon as shifts are posted is a literal "everyone for themselves" while trying to win your co-workers in securing a bloody shift).
So, no, it is not full-time... yet all I do is sleeping, eating, working and start over again. I'm on autopilot whether due to exhaustion or depression... could be both 🤷🏻‍♀️
I wish I could get out of this vicious circle, but my family needs the money and I need to find ways to get it even if that means to work more hours, to sacrifice my goals and dreams.
Will I succumb to the "side hustle" craze and definetly lose my mind?
Tune in next Thursday to see the end of this riveting story.
“If you have time to watch Netflix you have time for a side hustle” my side hustle is relaxing so that my body and brain can heal from by this nose-to-the-grindstone bullshit. I refuse to feel guilty for being a human with the need to relax sometimes. my side hustle is no.

I always wanted to learn because my grandmother spoke it... however she never wanted to teach me or her own daughters because hers wasn't "100% pure Russian" 😝 She was born in Belarus (in 1938 it was still The Soviet Union) and came to Latinamerica in 1939 to live in Paraguay for 10 years. In there she got mixed in with other people that escaped the war/the regime so everybody spoke basic Russian and some words in Ukranian, Belarrusian, Polish and many other Slavic dialects (apparently once someone from the family came to visit from Russia and was like "What language do you all speak? That's not Russian!" hence, granny got traumatized and thought she wasn't good enough at it 🙃)
Since I "cracked" the English language, I've been looking to get my hands on a new one while rejecting the "common ones" like Italian, Portuguese and French (all based off Latin, and are somewhat similar to Spanish -my native language-). They don't seem challenging enough for me.
I liked having to learn a new alphabet... is like decoding a secret code 😎
Yes, declinations are hard and I always try to get ahead of myself to learn more and more words... but 🤫 there's nothing to see in here... keep moving.
Listening to russian music made me realize that it sounds beautiful (melody hits different than speech) and now I laugh whenever someone tells me what they hear either when I'm listening to a song or talking in Russian.
The culture, of course!
I grew up reading Russian Fairytales and I always adored them (but I won't forgive Tolstoi and his "The Lion and the Dog" tale for breaking my heart). And now being able to see the animations (even if I understand about 40% of what they say, unless it is translated/subtitled) is wonderful. One day I'll be able to read them in their author's original words... but not yet!
I started to follow this page because any new exposition to the language is a good excercise. My job has fried my brain so I'm not on top of the game with my studies, so trying to read anything is better than doing nothing, plus (as I've stated before) my teacher is "from the old guard" and there a new words or terminology that she doesn't know and may come in handy whenever I try to speak with a XXI century native 🤭
Hey everyone!
Lately, I've been feeling a bit lost with my Russian language blog. Given the current situation, it's hard to see the bigger picture and the purpose of teaching this beautiful language.
But then, I had an amazing conversation with one of my students, and with other students, too, and it reminded me of the joy of cultural exchange and language learning.
That got me thinking... what do YOU love about learning Russian? Why do you follow this blog? What kind of posts resonate most with you?
Your insights would be invaluable right now. Hearing your perspectives and the reasons you enjoy learning Russian would be a huge source of inspiration.
Let me know in the comments below!
P.S. No pressure at all, but if you have any specific post ideas or topics you'd like to see explored, feel free to share those too!

As an argentinian I feel compelled to share that Dr. René Favaloro created the cardiac by-pass and also refused to patent it given that is was going to save lives.
He ended up killing himself under the pressure of economical debts.

I really need help on this one, especially because I created it so I'm going to have to be his biggest advocate.
Hi, I'm Riley, I'm from the US, and I'm creating this fundraiser for Mohammed Seyam - who is in Belgium - to help his brother, Dr. Ahmed Seyam, and Ahmed's family. This message is from Ahmed with some minor edits for clarity.
"Hello Dear,
I'm Dr. Ahmed and am a surgeon working in gaza. I'm married and I have 3 children, the oldest 7 years old and the youngest 2 years old.
Now, in this barbaric war, I leave my family several days in bad condition and bad sanitation in small tents in Rafah at south of Gaza Strip during my duty as a surgeon, but the situation become critical and the health status for my children become worse due to bad hygiene and the shortage of water.
Also my flat in the north of Gaza damaged badly.
There is nothing left for me in this place. I want to flee with my family and find a safe country for them.
Help me. To leave, I need $30000 to do travel coordination.
This is my family:

And this is me doing my work:

The food actually ran out, and signs of fatigue and exhaustion appeared on our faces.
Weight loss has become evident on our bodies. Grains, flour, rice, fodder, and even animal feed ran out. There was nothing left.
Poverty, siege, killing, starvation, destruction, and cold. This is part of what we live in the southern of Gaza Strip. Children died, the milk of nursing mothers dried up, and we fell into a state of danger.
We issue the final warning: between life and death there are limited steps and hours."
Paying to get out through the Rafah gate costs from $7,000-$8,000 for adults and $2,000-$3,000 for children, and Ahmed is looking to evacuate his family of five. He will also need money for travel expenses.
Please help Dr. Ahmed and his family. Every donation - no matter how small - helps and can give hope.

As a semi-profesional Interpreter I can attest that AI can't and won't replace the usefulness of learning a language.
First of all, all of us (phone and video interpreters) are forbidden of using either Google live captions or any kind of software that might help us take notes (yes, some still use them either way). The reason why is because we manage delicate information: names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, adresses, phone numbers and such... you can't let that information be stored or feed an AI. It is sensitive information that should remain confidential!
Secondly, there are many words that mean a thousand different things depending on the language and the cultural background of the person speaking.
I interpret from Spanish to English and viceversa. My former supervisor once told me that, when he was an interpreter, once a woman told him "a ella se le cayó el bebé hace tres meses" which in word-by-word translation (like the machine generated ones) would be translated as "she dropped the baby three months ago". Imagine telling that to the doctor while examining a baby! My supervisor of course wanted to corroborate what the woman said and she clarified that her daughter/friend had given birth to the baby three months ago.
I stumbled with "aliviarse" (literal meaning: to relief oneself) as a replacement for "giving birth", "a orilla mío" (in my shore) as "next to me", "ocupar" (to occupy) as "need", "embeces" instead of "a veces" (sometimes).
As and argentinian, if I tell you "no tengo un mango" (I don't have a mango) I'm not talking about the fruit, is a phrase that in here means "I don't have a cent".
Machines don't think and don't ask for context before translating a word. We do.
So no, AI could be a one time solution but it is not reliable and it doesn't matter how much it is trained it will never be as accurate as a human.
Motivation to learn languages?
Is learning new languages becoming a lost and forgotten skill because of the AI tools?
Now that you have automatics translation tools for practically everything, and even zoom meetings have on-the-fly interpretation options, what motivates you to learn languages?

The other day our President (Javier Milei, Argentina) had a meeting with this guy and it was embarrasing seeing so many guys (journalists and the one that was the link for that meeting to happen) riding Musk's d#ck.
Like... I get it... our prior Presidents (the Peronistas) treated Maduro, Putin and Castro as the Greatests Men in the world. Those fighting the USA, the underdogs against the Big Bad Guy. Changing from that perspective is encouraging... but Musk? Really?
"He's concerned about the demography, it is a lie that we are overpopulated. He's pro-life, has 11 kids and wants the world to reproduce" like WHAT THE BLOODY HELL??
Mom was like "well, he means like in those towns in Europe where there is only old people left"
"India, Africa, even Latinamerica are overflowing with people!" And then it struck me... we are not the kind of people he wants.
Our President is an economist. For the way he speaks and the things he says is more than obvious that he doesn't care about anything else but the economical debacle that over 50 years of Peronismo have left behind. (I have the feeling that he might be autistic to some extent, but I'm no-one to say that). People paints him as Far Right (even his followers) but I don't see him like that (the Vice-President is more on the Far Right side than him and apparently there is already a rupture between them) he just doesn't care. Yes, he keeps calling "The Left" as the evil to fight because -as I said many times before- our "Left" is very contaminated by The Peronismo (an opportunistic party that will take any mantle to perpetuate themselves in power. They were literally born out of Fascism and They are The Left? Gimme a break!). Trust me if you'd meet them you'll hate them too.
I believe that he is isolated from reality, too caught up on analytics and economical theories that he can't see the full picture. That's why he said that is not true that women get paid less than men for the same work. I agree that is not a constant in every single company out there, but it does happen... but he goes like "if it were cheaper to hire women all companies should be overflowing with women across the board" and yes, that would make sense... is not a wrong way of thinking (from a Capitalist point of view: anything to maximise earnings with little to no expenses) but it lacks nuance. He did worked on the Private sector before going full-on education (and eventually politics) but either he never saw anything besides his nose or just didn't care.
I sort of understand why he would (pretty much) fall in love with Loin Moist, for the same reason that any -mostly guys- of his followers do "he's bold! Thinking always ahead! He built an empire! Blah, blah, blah". The world is so used to the good vs bad, black vs white, winner vs loser that everybody lost any critical thinking.
My country is sinking... having a multi millonaire interested in investing on us does feel like reaching the last life-saviour but people shouldn't get blinded by it.
Sadly, my country's education has been so ransaked that it is going to take decades to have people with brains again.

To be fair everybody will always criticize something.
As far as I understood, the first movie was accused of being copaganda (so a favourable propaganda of cops) but I understood quite the opposite.
They are shown as useless, lazy and altogether not great at all. Grom is a police but keeps getting in trouble for not following the rules (the same one that makes all officers terrible at their jobs) and he does lashes out to his captain saying that the entire system is corrupt and doesn't work. At the very begining both Grom and Dr. Plague are on the same side (ideologically) and part of St. Petersburg's inhabitants too.
Once Dr. Plague kills the dumpster's owner and his family (his young son included) people divided themselves between "this is too much" and "this is just what we needed". Kind of dividing between wanting to change the system on a good way and just embracing chaos for the sake of chaos and destruction as the only valid way to change.
Even if I understand the Dr. Plague's followers and their protests, I think that what the movie shows its not so much of "protesting is bad" as "violence changes nothing" because those who felt oppressed became the oppressors.
The movie!terrorist attack will stir some emotions and most likely will be the line on the sand that people dares not to cross (AKA paying a ticket to watch the movie) because it's too soon... but I don't think there is a good-enough parallel to see any kind of repercussion on real life.
Weird poll on the movie "Major Grom: The Game."
Context: When the movie "Major Grom Plague Doctor" came out, the creators were accused of showing protesters as bad guys (in Russia all protests were peaceful before, but now they are banned and you can be jailed even for going on a solitary picket with a "No War" banner) Plus the movie came out after the protests for jailing Alexei Navalny.
In May the movie "Major Grom: The Game" is coming out, where judging by the content of the comics and the trailer there will be terrorist attacks. I remind you that recently in Russia there was a terrible terrorist attack in Crocus City Hall.
English is not my native language, I used Google Translator when translating, so if there are any errors, please let me know

Yesterday we did our first Book Fair at the club while celebrating Maxim Gorki's birthday (with delay due to a long weekend with Easter + April 2nd -Rememberance of those who fell in the Malvinas/Faukland Islands).
Almost nobody turned up. Maybe we were 20 and from 20, 11-ish related to the club and the organization of the event.
Nothing new. But at least we did something.
It was a given that the books in Belarusian, Russian and Ukranian weren't going to be sold right away... (these books are from the Soviet Era so a hard sell unless someone likes historical stuff) bit at least we sold 5 books!
We'll keep on trying... we can't let our club disappear 💪🏻
