And frankly, it is not surprise that that they evolved? devolved? into their current form, as the conservative agenda loooooooooves to misrepresent gay men as predatory pedophiles. It’s the same old shit given a not so new coat of paint.

I also completely agree - engaging with them is completely counter-productive, as they are not here to be convinced of anything. They are not here to learn and grow and change. They are here to feel good about themselves, and that involves being a purity wanker. Who they hurt and destroy - in the vast majority of cases, those are the same victims of sexual violence and LGBT people they purport to protect on their quest to eradicate “problematic” (another meaningless word used as a dogwhistle) content - is completely irrelevant. Real life victims of abuse reaaaaally don’t matter to them.I’d say the fictional ones do, but even that is not true, since all a purity wanker is about is themselves and nothing else.

Browsing through the main tag, as I sometimes do when my dashboard is being slow, I encountered a question from someone new to the show - as the question had an interesting (and actually semi-objective) answer, I spent a while mentally composing a response.  Clicked on their blog just to see if anyone else had already picked it up in the meantime, and they had a note at the top about how pro-shippers (Bryan Fuller included) should go away.

Well, I don’t tend to call myself that, and I sure as fuck don’t mess with the Twitter wank, but I’m definitely one of those incredibly nasty, unreasonable folks who think real people shouldn’t be harassed for what they write about fictional people, so alright, then.  Away I go.  No answer for you.

I at least theoretically get the idea of being a fan of a thing (especially TV shows) while thinking the showrunner(s) can go to hell, but with Hannibal it’s like… how did you even watch this all the way through, let alone like it enough to become a fan of it, and think “ah yes, I can make something Good and Pure and Unproblematic out of the Messy Murder Queers Squick Show”?????

(I mean, the answer is probably a complete lack of media literacy combined with a similar lack of self-awareness.  Still, it’s a hard thing to internalize.)

Anyway, I’m cranky that I wasted time and energy on a post I didn’t end up making, and also just… honestly a bit sad thinking about all the really interesting shit the purity wankers are cutting themselves off from.  The people who are this fandom’s institutional memory and the people who are okay with you trying to cancel Bryan Fuller over purity wank are a non-overlapping Venn Diagram.

Virtually every single purity wanker is either an actual child with too much time, money and access to the internet and or a (very) young adult who never paid attention at school and never bothered to read anything beyond 100,000+ word long “unproblematic” (read: about as interesting as watching paint dry) coffee shop AU.They are painfully uneducated, painfully entitled and absolutely ravenous for attention and validation from other purity wankers, since they have tied their entire identity to being a purity wanker.

The most hilarious part is that if any of those ever actually were given the opportunity to run a show like this - or any show for that matter - they’d run it into the ground because whiny, ignorant twits like that can’t actually create anything, they can just whine and destroy.

I’m humbly asking for a little help for myself since this is probably the worst trauma of my life right now.

Dad was t-boned by a drunk driver Friday night, the car was spun and he was ejected through the windshield into the engine (the hood opens different from most cars) and was trapped unconscious burning til a passerby saved his life. He’s going to need amputations, and he’s combative about all care, so not only are we fighting to keep him alive, we’re fighting HIM to do it (he’s phobia-terrified of hospitals). NONE of us have had sleep.

I have to stay home from work to help with things here, and I can’t afford to stay home. I’m only part time at work and make about $180 a week, and i really seriously need the income to stay up on bills, but there is no way I can leave right now. I’ve already missed two days and I’m not coming in next week either (there’s too much we have to legally do within a certain time frame even with the trauma we’re all trying to process) but the loss of paycheck isn’t doable but if I go into work I’m gonna break down (none of us have slept) but if I don’t go into work next I can’t pay my bills (unless like, can you pay a credit card with a credit card somehow? I’ve had maybe 15hrs of sleep in six days since it happened I can’t think straight but if that’s an option it can keep me floating til I double pay I guess idfk I can’t think)

I just need a little bit of help. Dad has a severe concussion (a literal softball sized lump on his head where he went through the windshield), the vertebra that supplies blood oxygen to the brain is fractured, and the surgeon just said he’s probably gonna lose 2 fingers from the fourth degree burns on his hand (you can see his tendons— his knuckle is completely gone- and the burns have pretty much degloved him. Do NOT google that if you don’t know what it is). I am very much still in shock even if it doesn’t seem like it. A human person should never look how my dad does, and he should absolutely be dead rn.

If anyone could spare a couple bucks or reblog or whatever, I’d super appreciate it. It would be one less thing for me to worry about and I’m absolutely desperate for any kind of help with things rn because I don’t know what to do. We’re all so exhausted on maybe 2-3hrs of sleep a night, my mom couldn’t remember how to turn on the tv with the remote and started sobbing (that’s ALL our brain states right now) and I’m the oldest child and trying to keep shit together..

I’d really appreciate if anyone could spare a few bucks just so I can keep my head above water while drowning in everything else. If you can’t, I’d really really appreciate reblogs.

It feels like a relevant time to remind people that if you want to prevent abuse in fandom, calling people abusers because you don’t like their ships doesn’t help. You can’t diagnose someone just from what kind of media they consume.

And above and beyond that? Worrying about what someone ships distracts us from how they treat other people, which is the really important part if you want to spot and prevent potential abuse

Here are some things that do work that you (yes, you!) can do to make fandom safer today

Suggest your local groupchat or fandom hangout create Community Guidelines that clearly outline what abuse and harassment are, that they’re not allowed, and what will happen when people engage in them. Make sure these rules work no matter who breaks them, even if that person is in charge!

I am an actual abuse survivor. I have been abused by different people in different stages of my life. I read this post and I was legitimately triggered by it. And when I say “triggered” I don’t mean squicked, made uncomfortable, etc. I had a panic attack. I cried. I spent over an hour shaking with disgust and pure, violent rage. Not because pro-shippers are pedophiles. The post debunking it explains why. It was because I felt victimized all over again. BY YOU, SHOUNENCORE.

Tbh that's not entirely true. There are plenty of people who just want to read "problematic" content. And you know what? That's perfectly fine. Fiction is about exploring the darkest corners of the human experience, it's not just about writing 1 million word coffee shop AU with zero drama in it.There are multiple classics out there that have become classics exactly because the author focused on the pain and hardship and abuse a character faced and overcame. Or, occasionally, succumbed to. All those people wanking about "problematic" content could, actually become better people if they left ao3 and went on to reading those classics.
