THIS!!! This is exactly it!! I studied elementary education in college and taught preschool for 10 years, and I worked SO HARD trying to build a lasting passion for learning that I knew was just gonna be eaten up by the education system in a few years. It is AWFUL to see, and it’s sooo discouraging to the teachers as well as students. I hate that the people who have power to FIX things don’t think it’s a broken system.

And then they expect us to parent these children on top of everything else that’s required of being a teacher nowadays (there’s so much, pls don’t make me list it all) and it’s like…why is it even a question that there are teacher shortages?? Especially when we’re paid crap wages for the mountain of work we do—nevermind that many of the materials we use for the classroom is purchased by ourselves.

This is why. The toll greatly outweighs any benefit.

I’ve worked at a charter school for three months and yeah. It’s a test score factory. It is very much a business that sells test scores. Maybe this is just because I came in during “testing season” but the fact that January through May is “testing season” is exactly the fucking problem.

I just saw somewhere you recommend writing 300 words a day. I can't imagine how to do that, I will manage 50-100 at most and I will edit endlessly. Do you continuously add to the story without returning to the previous chapters and keep almost everything as it first occurred to you? Is it a matter of practice to become more productive and require less editing? I think I enjoy playing around with details though, is that a bad habit to shed?

Write whatever works for you. I wrote Coraline at 50 words a day because that was the time I had. I wrote American Gods trying for 2,000 words a day (and often failing) because it needed to be a thick book and at 50 words a day I'd still be writing it.
