If I were to find out that my alien space suit were a sentient creature, I simply would not instantly hate it and treat it as an unredeemable monster.

I was just remembering that at some point after me watching Spider-Man 3 and until the tumblr craze over the Venom movie, I just completely forgot Eddie existed
At some point I just convinced myself that Venom was just the gooey alien and I was wondering for some time how they got a solo movie, because in SM3 they didn’t even speak?? And tumblr kept talking about gay ships and I had no idea where the guy came from?
(It took me years to watch the movie after it was released despite me being into super hero movies and despite how intrigued the tumblr craze made me back then, because autism. Look at me now. Sometimes I wish I could forget Eddie’s existence)
Anyway, I was wondering what if I was right. What if it was just Symby being a strong independent slime after the heartbreak, and going full crazy ex on their own. That would be fun

three potential components to writing venom
type A, as a relationship: two individuals and how they interact. the purest example of this is probably the majority of planet of the symbiotes
type B, as an identity: them being one. purest example of this is every 90s comic where eddie doesn’t outwardly interact with the symbiote but venom says shit like “we are us” “we will not be reduced to some pathetic individual” “threatening the very identity we fought so long and hard to make our own” “ourself” - it’s seriously the best quirk, have you noticed, they never say “ourselves” because there’s just the one
type C, as a man and the personification of his darkness, or possibly an outside corrupting force: Symbiote Is A Metaphor For And The Cause Of Whatever I Struggle With. purest example of this is remender’s agent venom.
michelinie is a perfectly balanced A/B mix. costa is heavy on the A with some sprinkles of the B. the 2003 hunger and cates are A heavy on the C. bunn agent venom starts out fully C and then throws a bit of a curveball with Oh, But All Along It Was Also A From The Symbiote’s Perspective.
type C was presented as a possibility in peter david’s trial of venom and whatnot but really only came into full swing in the 2000s. type B feels underrepresented nowadays, as soon as the symbiote talks people seem to drop it

Noooo *kicks him back into grave*
He doesn’t deserve a new chance, he doesn’t deserve a symbiote, he doesn’t deserve to be back nononooo
Well, at least I hope we’ll get some good scenes like those I talked about last time I was reminded he existed 😔

I want to talk about Venom.
There are a few reasons why Venom is so good as a movie.
The obvious one is that the cast and the people who worked in the movie did a marvelous job, but it’s also deeper than that.
It’s because, at it’s core, Venom is a story about love. Not romantic, just all kinds of love.
Eddie loves his job and exposing people because he loves the world and wants to keep living in it. He loves Anne, but he’s hurt her. He still loves her later, but there’s not giant fight between him and Dan over who Anne “belongs to”, just him accepting that Anne moved on. Eddie loves Maria, even if it’s platonic it can still be love, giving her 20 bucks when he isn’t swimming in profit because she needs them, trying to break her out of the holding cell knowing he’ll probably set off an alarm.
Anne leaves Eddie because their love becomes unhealthy and things fall apart because of Eddie’s behavior. But she still loves him, just as a friend, but an old friend who she’s known for a long time. She cares about him. Lets him wear her cardigan when they’re driving to the hospital. Used the computer to produce the MRI sound to get Venom out of Eddie when it was made clear that Venom was killing him. Anne doesn’t love him the same way anymore, but it’s clear she still cares about him, very much.
Dan loves Anne, but he also loves Eddie. Not romantically, but he loves him the same way people love other people. He doesn’t think that Eddie’s behavior is just jealousy over Anne and doesn’t ever dismiss any of the symptoms as such. Runs extra tests to figure out what’s up with Eddie. His first and foremost concern is making sure that Eddie’s okay. Even so, he’s ready to protect Anne if there’s a chance there’s danger. He loves her.
Even the doctor we see in first half of the move, she clearly loves. She loves her job even if she hates the way Drake pushes on them. She loves her children, the people she’s blackmailed with by Drake when she doesn’t want to keep doing unethical experiments. She loves people as a whole, enough so to risk her life to tell Eddie that he was right and help smuggle him in, because people have to know. She caves into Drake’s interrogations because she’s worried about Eddie, worried about the symbiote hurting him. She loves people just as much as anyone else, even if her story is shorter and sadder than the rest.
Venom’s entire character and his whole time on Earth is just him learning to love. I don’t mean love like ‘I’m in love with you’ love, but learning about the kind of love humans have. Love for just one person in that strong, almost burning way, love for family, love for the people around you, love for the world around you, love for life, all of these kinds of love that Venom didn’t have before.
Earlier in the movie, Venom can feel Eddie’s love for Anne, and his guilt. Venom pushes Eddie to apologize. Venom keeps Eddie safe in a stranger and odd way maybe, but he does his best as he knows. Venom takes over Anne and finds Eddie. Venom grows to love Eddie as more than a host. Whether it’s romantic or platonic, both of them love each other. Venom loves Anne and Dan, if only because they’re people that Eddie also cares about who care about him. Venom loves this planet and the people on it. How else can someone justify a parasite that was going to invade the planet doing a 180 and fighting his own leader just a few days after his initial meeting Eddie?
At it’s core, Venom is a love story. But it’s not just about one kind of love, and that’s why it’s such a good love story.
