Media and Government: A Love-Hate Relationship
Media and Government holds the greatest power in our society. Both can manipulate the society and their love-hate relationship affects the whole nation thus, it can cause immense chaos. One great example of this love-hate relation between both parties is the ABS-CBN shutdown issue last 2020. The government was not glad with what the TV station has been reporting so the action that the government made was to dig the flaws ABS-CBN made in the past. On the other hand, another TV station, GMA, reports news in the favor of the President. This happening caused the views of people to stir. The speculations that a media outlet who reports in favor of the government and sugarcoats their statement receives bribe while another media outlet that reports news based on facts is speculated to support the other political party. Due to lack of transparency, these are only rumors.
As we see, the government favors the media outlet where they can get something, where they can benefit while the opposite happens to the media outlet who opposes the government’s agenda. The government utilizes their authority to deprive our countrymen the democracy we deserve. Main reason for this is either the government has absolute flaws where people can easily condemn them in a snap. With the government at the upper hand, the people won’t have a say. They’ll equip the law and use it against the media that opposes them. So much for democracy, the media we are provided today has already been manipulated. The news these media outlets release to the general public is like the criteria if they will be a target or an ally of the government. It is up to our perspective whether we believe every sugarcoated statement in our media or wake up to the reality of how manipulated it is.
