Cartoonists, Comic Creators, Graphic Novelists and Manga Fans: CALL FOR ENTRIES DEADLINE NOW EXTENDED
**DEADLINE EXTENDED TO 20 JANUARY**
During his lifetime William Shakespeare was already being hailed as the greatest writer of his day, and the intervening 400 years have only increased his reputation. No other literary figure has affected world culture so profoundly, or has had such a widespread influence on other thinkers and artists. William Shakespeare is the most universally recognised, culturally iconic figure in the world.
In April 2016, on the 400th anniversary of his death, artists, scholars, teachers, students and others who love his writings will be coming together from all over the world, meeting at Elsinore, Hamlet’s castle, to discuss the legacy, and the future, of Shakespeare’s work at Shakespeare: the next 400 years.
At the heart of this celebration is the Graphic Shakespeare Competition, open to comic creators, cartoonists, manga artists and illustrators worldwide and of all ages.
The Graphic Shakespeare Prize has two options for entry:
1.    To depict one of five famous scenes in four pages, choosing from:
1-1 A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Bottom’s Transformation
1-2 Romeo and Juliet: the Balcony Scene
1-3 Macbeth: the Three Witches
1-4 Hamlet: the nunnery scene
1-5 Twelfth Night: Orsino vs. Cesario (Viola)
2.    Or to depict the scene of your own choosing, and of as many pages as you find appropriate.
For both of these strands, artists are free to use Shakespeare’s text, to abridge, to modernise Shakespeare’s language, to give the text in your own native language, or to tell the story without words.
The winners will travel to Elsinore Castle, Denmark next April to take part in the competition and meet the judges- comics expert Paul Gravett, Self Made Hero’s Emma Hayley, Teesside’s new programme leader for comics Fionnuala Doran and renowned manga artist Harumo Sanazaki.
Artists and creators are invited to email [email protected] (Yukari Yoshihara) with subject title “Graphic Shakespeare competition” by January 20th to register their interest in participation and get details of submission details and deadline.
