Nissan Jam
For this first show the JCCS crew contacted Connell Nissan in Costa Mesa for a special venue on their lot..
This imported Bluebird-U in SSS trim was looking proper on Watanabes. Very clean, even had the JDM manuals displayed on the dash. Up You!
The Bluebird-U wasnt the only slice of JDM on the lot with Watanabes. This 4 door resto-mod Hakosuka looked ready to hit the track with its roll cage, lowered suspension...
...and RB swap!
Other Hako owners going with a more traditional set up....
...like this Weber side draft powered L series. Modern vs vintage, which would you choose?
Its been nice to see more and more state side Hako owners getting adventurous with these cars, especially when you see a well executed RB26 swap on ITB's.
Resto-modded Hako too crude? Perhaps something a bit more stately?
Perfect for your next G8 summit..
It was oddly surreal seeing the different generations of Nissans all sharing the same lot. If only these cars were actually for sale haha.
The guys at the Stillen on the other hand had plenty of stuff for sale..
Like these AP Racing calipers and rotors. I wonder if those would fit on my 240Z?
Also brought was their Supercharged 370Z demo car. This kit will push the VQ engine to over 500+ HP!
While I didn't get those AP brakes or the 370Z, I did end up walking away with a nice consolation prize. A beautiful hard copy biography on racing legend and Nissan hot-shoe, Steve Millen. Looks like a good read.
Now back to cars. This Shiro Special 300ZX's paint was looking factory fresh.
And the Starion wheels were a nice touch. Definitely one of the greatest OEM wheels ever made.
Hey! Whats that FJ40 doing at Nissan Jam? Oh wait its a Nissan Patrol. I for one didn't know we had these rugged off-roader in the States.
Simple engineering and built to last. Might have to look into these later in the future, you know something to haul the kids around.
Spilled juice box? No problem. Just hose them down (the Patrol and the kid lol).
.
The Patrol owner also brought along this mint 510 wagon.
Liking the custom rising sun door cards.
That'll do it for the very first Nissan Jam show. For a brand new event, the turnout was pretty good. I'm sure next years will be even bigger as word gets around. Once again thanks to the JCCS guys who set this up, Connell Nissan for hosting, and the devoted Nissan enthusiasts who live and breath all things Nissan. In the words of the great Yukata Katayama or Mr K as he is known, "Love cars, love people, love life!"

Bimmerfest 2013
Now for something a bit different. Here on Grand Touring you may have noticed a slight bias to Japanese automotive culture, but don't let that fool you into thinking we only like cars from the land of the rising sun. Our motto here is "Life in Cars" and that represents all automotive lifestyles and cultures, and one of the greatest are the die-hard enthusiasts that gather for the yearly Bimmerfest.
We were informed of Bimmerfest by our good friend and resident E36 nut Jacob Bain of Full-Frame. Neither one of us had ever been to Bimmerfest, so we didn't know what to expect. We knew it was a big show but nothing prepared us for a event of this magnitude.
This was the queue to get in and It stretched all the way around the Rose Bowl. Now you have to realize that Bimmerfest has a unique pricing structure. $20 per walk in or $15 for everyone in your car if you drive a BMW. So as you can imagine, almost every car was packed, our own M3 sedan being filled to the brim.
Though the wait was long we were in good company....
...and soon enough we had our passes.
The original plan was to stake out a spot in the main show area but the turnout was way more than we expected so we ended up parking in the lot.
You can always get a good idea of a show by the cars in the parking lot, and judging by the cars we parked next to, we knew we were in for a treat.
I imagine for a BMW enthusiast, heaven must look a lot like this.
This E9 caught my eye as soon as I walked in. At first glance I thought it was a 2800cs...
...But the front had that unmistakable 2000cs fascia.
This clean 2002ti was packing a little surprise under the hood...
...in the form of a Honda F22c from a S2000. I know this engine has become a very popular swap in various Japanese chassis. This was the first time id seen one in a BMW..
But apparently its becoming fairly common. This one must be a handful haha.
Speaking of motor swaps, the BMW community isn't against swapping their engines into anything with 4 wheels.
This rat rod was looking low and mean powered by one of Bavaria's finest V8's.
These two great takes on one great model.
With the silver one looking like it just rolled out of the factory
Throughout the show, owners would delight fans by firing up their cars and revving their engines. This Alpina B9 owner decided to join in on the fun.
The sound was amazing. Like bears to honey, people flocked to see what was making that beautiful sound.
While most owners prefer to modify and modernize their cars, this was a perfect example of the beauty the stock body had.
A truly timeless design.
BMW has a long standing tradition with art cars. Artists and designers like Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons transform these cars into moving works of art and in the case of Robin Rhode, painted a canvas with a car..
Now i don't know if this was a officially commissioned piece by BMW, but I'm sure they would love what this artist had created.
While I am more of a classic BMW fan, this E36 was my definite favorite of the modern showings.
I really loved the Work Meisters S1's on this car.
I really enjoyed Bimmerfest and will be looking toward next years show. Thank you to all who hosted this show and all the enthusiasts who made this event possible. I definitely have a new respect for these German motors. I might have to look into getting a 2800cs or 2002ti myself.

MSA Z-Car West Coast Nationals
Tumblr media
As the summer months start to heat up, so too do the car meets. My schedule has been so jam packed with different event to go to that I am having a hard time keeping up. However, one meet I always try to attend is the well renown MSA Z-car West Coast Nationals. For three days, some of the best Z cars descend on the MSA warehouse in Orange, CA to show off their latest mods and builds. While the main street event was on Sunday, the day that draws the most hardcore of Z enthusiasts is their garage sale on Saturday.
Tumblr media
Last year I came right at 9:00am when their website said that they would open up the garage sale. When I got there everything was gone. It didn't make any sense to me, so this year I decided that I would get there 30 minutes before they open the gate so I could get a go at the parts. Turns out I wasn't the only one.
Everyone was getting antsy waiting on the sidelines. The only thing between them and the parts they so desired was a thin strip of yellow tape. People were positioning themselves so they could beeline straight to what they needed at the opening.
At 9 o'clock on the dot, they opened up the garage sale. Black Friday shoppers had more decorum than these guys. People were diving across tables and other people for parts. I saw two guys going full on tug-o-war on a single Z embroidered floor mat. I had never seen anything like it.
While I dont have a after photo of the carnage that ensued, I can tell you that nothing was left behind. Luckily I did manage to snag a few choice parts for my Z, though I did have to beat an old lady with an exhaust manifold to get them... I regret nothing...
Besides the auto parts battle royale there were a few nice cars littered around the parking lot and dyno.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though my time there was short, it was great fun talking with other Z enthusiasts and checking out their latest projects. If you love Z cars make sure you mark your calendar for next year. Its always a great event. And for those of you planing on going to the garage sale next year, just a few words of advice. Wake up early and wear a cup.

ALMS at Long Beach part 2
As the flag dropped at the rolling start, the sound was unbelievable. It wasnt so much that you heard the noise but felt it reverberate throughout your body as thousands of horsepower roared pass.
Though this race was only 2 hours long, It wasn't without its losses. My favorite to win, the Dyson racing Mazda LMP car, was noticeably off pace with the other cars in the category. It seems that the car was having some mechanical issues which ended up getting the best of them as the car made contact at turn 1 which ended their run. Heres hoping they have better luck Mazda Raceway Leguna Seca.
The layout of the track definitely tested the drivers and their machines. Lots of tight technical turns meant a lot of last minute dives and contact. At once point one of the SRT Vipers made contact with a wall and drove the rest of the race with what i think was a taco king banner haha.
As the sun set the racing just got better. The light gave these cars an even more dynamic look as they passed. Shooting these cars as they passed was tough as i needed to press the shutter button almost a full second before they appeared. These guys were really moving.
But as with everything, all things must come to an end. Time seemed to have moved at twice the pace to keep up with these cars. It was a great race and I will definitely be back next year. Thank you to the ALMS and all their sponsors for setting up this great race and a big thank you to Long Beach for hosting it. I will try my best not to floor it down Shoreline drive next time I'm in town.

ALMS at Long Beach part 1
This past weekend the city of Long Beach was host to the 39th annual Toyota Grand Prix. Every year, Long Beach's Beautiful waterfront promenade is transformed into one of motor-sports most technical street courses. The skies were clear and the track ready to test man and machine to the limit.
Tumblr media
The course varies a little every year but the action on the track is always top notch, and being a street course you are always close to the action.
And in some places you could almost reach out and touch the cars.
The race schedule was packed all day with qualifying and races from all the series that were running. From production based race cars to full on prototypes and Indy's, the day had something for everyone.
Since I arrived during the celebrity race "halftime" show, I thought it would be a great opportunity to check out the exhibitions in the convention center.
Just like all the different races going on, the exhibition vendors were trying to get a piece of the weekend action.
Formula D had a strong presence at their booth with all their drift cars getting prepped for the Motegi Racing Super Drift Challenge..
This one reminded me of a angry linebacker for some reason.
For the scale model and RC lover, Tamiya had a great booth area for enthusiast young and old.
This little guy has some good taste haha.
One of the cool little surprises at this show was the Formula SAE booth.
For those of you who don't know about Formula SAE, its a international formula car style competition between university engineering students . Some of the most innovative and competitive racing can be found at these competitions.
The UC Irvine engineering team brought the car they campaigned last year.
Originally made to run gasoline, the car was converted to natural gas for increased fuel efficiency and performance. I am told this year's car will be an all electric racer and should put up some very good numbers.
Talking with these guys you can tell they really know their stuff and are excited to work on these cars. Good luck to you guys at your next competition.
Finally, like any good car event, there were plenty of beautiful cars littered around the exhibition hall.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With so many cars and vendors I kinda lost track of time. Luckily I stopped just as the ALMS pre-race ceremonies were starting.
It was time to find a seat at the starting line! See you in part 2.

ADM Z Meet
General meets like cars & coffee and local Friday night drive-ins bring a great variety of automobiles together. One can enjoy a diverse selection of automotive cultures all in one spot. However if you really want to know what fuels these car guys, you need to visit an enthusiast's event. An event dedicated to a certain theme, make or model where people can share in their common interests and passions. Events like the ADM Z meet.
Tumblr media
This past Friday the Automobile Driving Museum in El Segundo (ADM) hosted a gathering of Z enthusiasts. A fitting place for a Z meet as El Segundo has been home to many historic race teams like B.R.E and Cunningham racing that gave the Z its foothold in american racing history.
The event was also host to a very special guest, designer of the current iteration in the Z car series, Mr Randy Rodriguez
The process and amount of effort Nissan and its design teams put into every car they make is truly astounding. Mr Rodriguez's 370Z design effort alone was herculean. Heres hoping to see many more beautiful creations from this talented designer.
Mr Rodriguez also fielded many questions from the audience, even from home town hero and racing legend Mr John Morton.
A great surprise treat.
After a few more questions, personal insights and history, we really started to understand what made these enthusiasts tick, but as with any meet, it all boils down to the cars and this meet was no exception.
Time seemed to fly by and before we knew it, it was all over.
A big thank you to the ADM, Mr Rodriguez, Mr Morton and all of the Z enthusiasts that made this event possible. I sincerely hope to see more events like this in El Segundo. It was a perfect example of what an enthusiast meet can be. If you are ever in town, make sure to stop by the Automobile Driving Museum, you wont be disappointed.
