"Say it again?" Steve asked of Peggy immediately after her declaration, giving away how much he needed the reassurance that this was real. That this wasn't the imaginings of a broken man with an equally broken mind. He returned home after the war, but all too often, he felt so out of place. He wasn't as sure of himself as he used to be. It felt as though he'd been discovered in the ice a second time and had to once again adapt to the world around him. But then she would be there. With a look. Or a brief touch. Or a comment like in that moment. The peace of mind he wasn't sure she knew she brought to him always followed.

// Hello to those who've followed me recently! I'm usually over on my other main rp since I've had muse for that character for years, so this is a low activity rp account by comparison, but I do stop by here every once in a while and try to keep this muse relatively active.

"As far as I'm aware, everything's fine. The chills went away after about a week. Though, I did worry I was a goner because it took so long to recover. Felt pretty weird being more like my old self again, laid up in bed having nothing more than hot broth and stale bread for every meal."
Even now, he wondered if he was running cold when Peggy graced him with her caring touch. Or perhaps he was simply hyper aware of the warmth emanating from her because she was there, in front of him, after he believed he was going to his death by taking that plane down. Pressing his hand to the back of Peggy's, he leaned his face into the palm of her hand with a quiet sigh, the lashes of his now closed eyes catching the flickering glow from the fireplace which cast the shadow of them on his skin.
"I hope almost dying from the choice I made is punishment enough for disobeying your order," he spoke, sounding far more serious than he intended. It took a few seconds for him to be able to look at her again, worried as he was that a debate might form yet understanding why it probably should happen. She'd been kept in the dark for weeks that he was okay, let alone alive. He still heard her words over the radio clear as if she'd just spoken them. It wasn't fair to her, what he did.
"I haven't stopped thinking about you or the promise I made to you since I returned. I am so sorry for not being there, Peggy."
"If this is some cruel conception of your mind, Howard, I will never forgive you." She scolds sternly. Some of his experiments were quite realistic so naturally, Carter employs airs of suspicion. Her next threat goes dormant under the influence of Howard's words to Rogers.
"You KNEW?!!!" She scowls sharply at Tony. He would pay for keeping THIS secret.
How many times has Carter revisited Steve's file? With yearning oaken orbs consuming every grace of his black and white picture, the one taken pre-serum? Before her now, with astonishing clarity, is her hearts most cherished desire. Within seconds ardent devotion returns, threading itself into her heartbeat. Crickey O'Reilly, Peggy was every bit as entranced by him as she had always been.

"And you, Steve? You were just going to show back up and never utter a solitary word?!" A soft note of betrayal lingers in the undercurrent of her tone.
"What plan was that?" Peg counters, eyes turning directly towards Howard from Steve. "To ambush me in a dark alleyway behind the Automat?" Alluding to Howard's latest stunt when introducing her to Edwin Jarvis. "You do know, I could have accidentally KILLED your butler, right?" Jarvis had gotten off lucky with jokes about being concussed.
She is grateful for the promise of privacy. The 'fondueing' commentary while amusing only earned Howard another scowl. Really? For all that money and creative genius of Stark's, he still resorted to employing painfully adolescent lexicon. Though the implication is one that turns her porcelain cheeks crimson.
The butterflies return, flitting indelicately up every vertebra of her spine as Steve, her Steve, approaches. Her own oaken orbs become swollen with unshed oceans. Concealing the more vulnerable emotions had become her second nature after years of practice. And yet, with Steve Rogers standing but a breath away, the facade begins to crumble, as if under the influence of an earthquake. It starts with a tremble in her painted lips and fragments into fathomless depths of her dark eyes. "I thought my instructions were quite clear, soldier..." She feels a sob building under her words as her quivering hand reaches out to cup his jaw. "I expressly told you not to be late." Long lashes cascade downwards to hide a few stubborn tears that trickled downwards. "Do you happen to have any idea what time it is?"
Her thumb delicately traces the wonderfully warm curve of his cheekbone. It's so vibrant, so alive. This was greater than the fantasies and the nightmares that kept her awake. His excuse is deemed acceptable. She could understand the delay far more easily now. "And?" Her eyes flash upwards with hopeful expectations. Replaced is the far too personal emotion. It is superseded by a business like flare, even if it is still tinged with emotion. "What did you discover? Has it any effect so far?"

"Steve?" Peggy Carter tremulously beckons. It couldn't be!!! She was in radio contact when the craft headed for New York downed somewhere in frigid waters. (timeguardians)

"Sorry, pal," Howard told Steve sincerely when Steve looked to him, unable to speak due to the mess of emotion that welled up as soon as he saw Peggy. "I didn't want to mess up your plan but I couldn't keep it from her any longer that we'd found ya." Howard glanced between Steve and Peggy before patting Steve on the shoulder, trying not to smile at how Steve was entirely incapable of hiding how he was feeling. "I'll give you two some privacy." Speaking up so Peggy could hear, Howard teased them both, taking great relief and satisfaction in getting the opportunity, "I won't be back tonight so no need to worry about any interruptions. You can fondue to your heart's content." Before Steve could say something to that, Howard was quick to turn and walk away, not wanting either of them to see him get emotional himself at their reunion.
With Howard gone, Steve returned his attention to Peggy, the longing he felt for weeks to see her again taking over completely after being supressed for so long, causing him to move toward her even though he still hadn't said a word. Only when he was close enough to touch her did he stop, blinking away the blurriness caused by welled up tears, and tell her, "I'm sorry for taking so long to come back. I wanted to make sure I was okay first. When Howard found me, he said I was trapped in a block of ice. Neither of us knew what effect it'd have on the serum."

"Alright, then. Daisy, you can call me Steve," he spoke with a gentle smile at the exchange, soon waving away her apology. "It's okay. While singing and songwriting are two things I'm sure I can't do well, I did pick up drawing when I was a child. It's helped me say a lot of things I wouldn't have been able to otherwise over the years." Through his many illnesses, his lack of friends, the death of his mother, joining the army, meeting the woman he could have married if things hadn't ended up the way they did, watching his best friend fall to his death — all of those things pushed gratefulness and relief into his next words. "It sure does seem like something to be thankful for, that we were lucky enough to find the things which help us cope with whatever struggles we have in our lives. Not many people get that chance. Or ever know it as an option." He looked on with a hesitancy regarding her offer of being a listening ear before telling her, "I'd be sharing the experiences of a soldier. Stories that are usually left to museum displays, and history books. Most of the time, not even that. You sure you want to hear about that kind of thing," he asked, giving Daisy an understandable out in case she decided she really didn't want to get roped into hearing a bunch of wartime stories.

Steve’s appetite for the whiskey he ordered disappeared the more he took in the words of the woman singing. Figured he’d still not be able to enjoy the drink even without it being on ration these days. He set about closing the tab he opened less than ten minutes ago and was about to leave when that same woman caught his attention again by asking his opinion. “Well, ma'am, I think it hit a little close to home for me,” he replied, the words spoken kindly in spite of the weight they held. “It’s not a bad song at all, even though it brings up things I’d rather not dwell on.”

“Ma’am?” She was visibly amused, though clearly taken aback. “God, I feel like my own grandmother.” Laughing a little. She wanted to put him at ease, however. His intentions were definitely honorable, she could feel that intuitively. “Call me Daisy.” She nodded to the bartender to grab her another drink, feeling like she needed to wind down after such a vulnerable performance. “You too, huh?” She knew a soul at unrest when she saw it. It was easy, like looking into a mirror. “Well, I write the songs so I don’t have to dwell on it. Sorry I dragged you down with me though.” Pale eyes spoke of a jovial, if not impish spirit. “If you wanna share, I could write one for you too.”

// Trying my best to return from hiatus. I need to refollow everyone because for a few hours I expected I'd be leaving the group. Things are just not good in rl right now for me, which is why I thought it'd be better to leave but I'm at that crossroad where I don't want to leave either. As long as this doesn't start stressing me out like everything else in my life is, I'll do my best to stay.

It was the first Saturday she’d played at the Sun Tavern. Just Daisy and a piano, stripped down to the bare bones of her soul. She’d played in front of people plenty of times, but it was the first time in this new setting. The first time in front of an actual crowd and not a Tuesday afternoon lull. And most of all, the first time it was just her, and a piano.
She played the vulnerable ballad with precision, the lilt of her voice offering some hope through the cracks of loneliness.
“I can do this with nobody else,
I can ruin this night by myself
I can peel off these soldiers alone,
I can write down my miserable poem
I can drink to my own bloody health,
I can ruin this night by myself.”
She finished the song, smiled almost shyly to the crowd before mouthing a “thank you” and headed to the bar for a much needed shot of whiskey. “Tell me the truth.” She didn’t look up from her glass, but she was clearly speaking to the stranger next to her. “What’d you think?”
