Inspirational Quotes
Tumblr media
Everyone needs extra inspiration/motivation every once in a while. Therefore, I have compiled a list of some of my favourite inspirational Harry Potter quotes (quotes are from the books and films).
“Working hard is important. But there is something that matters even more, believing in yourself”
“Books! And cleverness! There are more important things! - Friendship! And Bravery!”
“When in doubt, go to the library”
“It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities”
“It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live”
“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends”
“Ah, music,” he said wiping his eyes. “A magic beyond all we do here”
“Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on Earth should that mean that it is not real?”
“Words are, in my not-so-humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic”
“Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if only one remembers to turn on the the light”
“In dreams, we enter a world that’s entirely our own”
“It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be”
“We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That’s who we really are”
“Well, [bad] times like that bring out the best in some people and the worst in others’
“The ones who love us never really leave us, you can always find them in here”
“What’s life without a little risk?”
“We’re all human, aren’t we? Every human life is worth the same, and worth saving”
“You sort of start thinking anything’s possible if you’ve got enough nerve”
“Things we lose have a way of coming back to us in the end, if not always in the way we expect”
“No good sitting worrying about it. What’s coming will come, and we’ll meet it when it does”
I hope these quotes inspire you too!

ways to study for exams that are actually productive
use actual note cards for vocab. yes, apps like quizlet are dandy when you’re on the go, but actually physically writing out each note card helps put the information into memory faster than typing them.
visual learner? make charts and diagrams. they don’t have to be pretty. the lines don’t have to be perfectly straight. it doesn’t have to be photogenic. but if it helps you learn, do it.
after you take notes (in class or at home/from your text book), write down possible quiz questions about the material on the next page while it’s still fresh in your mind. later on when you’re studying for the test, use these questions to gauge what specifics out of that chapter you need to work on the most.
start sooner rather than later. i know, you’ve heard this a million times from every teacher ever. but it’s legit. especially as you get into harder level classes and college courses because there is literally so much material that the tests cover that you simply can not accurately learn all of it over night. instead, start about 10 days in advance (but of coarse, the sooner the better).
studying doesn’t have to be a big giant study session that takes hours. if you start far enough in advance, study sessions can be around an hour, hell even 45 minutes is a good. if you go too long in one study session your brain will be fried and studying will be pointless because your brain won’t be processing any of it. that’s why it’s important to take breaks and not just cram for 5 hours the night before an exam.
actually study. hold yourself accountable and make your education a priority. if you have homework and studying to do, make it a priority over going partying or watching tv. there will be another party. you can dvr your show. you can’t take your test on a later day because you don’t feel ready. so be ready.
be careful with study groups. if you have a study group with all of your best friends, lets face it, you’re going to end up spending more time talking about harry styles and supernatural than actually studying. it’s better to have a study group with people who are your friends, but not best friends. and it’s better to keep it between 5-7 people so that everyone can be involved.
if the material is just super confusing and you can’t seem to understand it no matter how hard you study, it’s not you. it’s the way you were taught it. each teacher teaches a bit differently, and maybe their style of teaching just isn’t for you. if this happens, find a way that explains it the best for you. for example, if chemistry is just super confusing for you, try watching the Crash Course chemistry videos on youtube or have a friend explain it to you. this will give you a completely different perspective on the material and will help you understand it better.
at the end of the day, remember that everything will be okay. studying can be stressful, especially if it’s in a class that you struggle in. but i promise you that you are not the only one who struggles sometimes in school, it’s a part of being human. as long as you actually put in an effort and try your best, be proud of yourself. take a deep breath. and remember: you got this.

Study Tips
Exams are finally done so I thought I’d finally make a post after my first year of law - hopefully it’ll help someone out
Note Taking
- You will find your favourite way to take notes - at the end of the year. You will look back at your notes at the start of the year and want to scream. That’s okay. You’ll know for next year
- My favourite way to take notes was using one of those books that are divided into different topics. I tried using refill and a binder. Never again
- WRITE YOUR NOTES BY HAND. I cannot stress this enough. The amount of people I seen during my 3 hour exams who were struggling to write after the first hour because they typed all their notes was ridiculous
- Another personal favourite for me was to go home at the end of the day or use my breaks to type up the notes for each class I had. That way it was much easier to find notes from say my first two weeks of uni when it got to the end of the year and I wanted to revise a certain topic
Exam Prep
- Read through your outline at the start of the year/semester. Know what your exam will be. Know if it’ll be multi choice or an essay. Know if it’s worth 40% or 60%. Know what to expect
- Read the previoua exams at the start of the year. Make a note of the basic themes of the questions for previous years. That way when you go over a topic, you can look and say “oh this was in the exam for the past 4 years in a row”. Don’t let the material be a surprise you discover in the last 4 or so weeks
- FLASH CARDS. They will be your best friend. I cannot tell you how many flash cards I made for my exams. I can’t tell you how many time they saved my ass when I went over them just before I walked in to the exam room
- When you’re sitting your exam remember to time yourself. I had 3 hours and 4 questions, which meant I had to stop writing after 45 minutes, even if I wasn’t done. Your marks come from the start of your answer - not the end. Set an allowed time and move on once it’s passed. If you start running out of time, bullet point information. Who knows, that extra case you mentioned might get you a mark, even if it’s not a real paragraph
Readings
- Law is a fuck ton of reading. I’m talking 2000+ pages for ONE paper. At the start of the week I liked to go through and work out how many pages I had to read for each paper. From there, I’d work out how many pages I would have to read every day to get it done. Sticky note the pages at the start of the week so you know exactly where you need to read to and by what day
- At the end of your reading for the day, or article (whichever comes first), write a couple of sentences to sum it up. That way when you come to exams, you just have a few sentences to read rather than 40 pages
- Stickey note your pages instead of highlighting. You want to be able to sell those textbooks at the end of it, and ones that are unmarked sell for more
Study/Stress Relief Tips
- Set yourself a study to break ratio. My personal favourite was 50 minute study, 10 minute break. If you can’t manage 50, try 30. Most importantly, DO NOT USE YOUR PHONE ON YOUR BREAK. Use that break to get up and go for a walk. Make some food, hang out the washing, anything. Just don’t use it to check Facebook or Twitter - you’ll find it much harder to come back
- Drink plenty of water. Have a water bottle with you and make a conscious effort to finish it while you study. It’s also good to use as a quick break to take a moment, have a drink and recollect yourself - especially during exams
- Yoga!! I’m super unfit, I don’t own a yoga mat, and I struggle with the poses but it is a life saver. If you’re doing a course that’s very heavy handed on the sitting and reading, you want to stay active. My personal favourite is a YouTube channel Yoga with Adrienne. She has 10 minute videos, 30 minute videos and hour long videos. Make sure you take the time to fit it in everyday - even just a 10 minute one. It’s important to let go of all the tension your body holds from constant studying. You’ll feel more energized and more focused when you come back
Your first year it’s a crazy learning curve - and it’s important to balance the fun and the study. I went out with friends but I also turned down opportunities because I was busy. I stayed late at uni with friends to finish assignments and made sure we met up to just chill and spend time with each other. Make sure you find that balance and have fun!

resource for procrastination
if you’re anything like me, working on a computer is a dangerous thing. i’ll get distracted by everything - that one email i should respond to, all the pictures of my dog, tumblr, and so on. I recently discovered an amazing resource to stop that.
it’s called writer’s block, and is free to download!
when you open it, it shows this screen, where you can choose either a time limit or word goal
Tumblr media
then when you start, it opens a document that fills the entire screen like this
Tumblr media
and you cannot quit the app or open anything else until your word/time quota is filled. i just wrote half of my english speech that i’ve been putting off all morning, and it took only 20 minutes!
so yup, it’s called writer’s block and is free for both mac and windows. enjoy!

How to Handle Having TOO MUCH To Do
So let’s say you’re in the same boat I am (this is a running theme, have you noticed?) and you’ve just got, like, SO MUCH STUFF that HAS to get done YESTERDAY or you will DIE (or fail/get fired/mope). Everything needs to be done yesterday, you’re sick, and for whatever reason you are focusing on the least important stuff first. What to do!
Take a deep breath, because this is a boot camp in prioritization.
Make a 3 by 4 grid. Make it pretty big. The line above your top row goes like this: Due YESTERDAY - due TOMORROW - due LATER. Along the side, write: Takes 5 min - Takes 30 min - Takes hours - Takes DAYS.
Divide ALL your tasks into one of these squares, based on how much work you still have to do. A thank you note for a present you received two weeks ago? That takes 5 minutes and was due YESTERDAY. Put it in that square. A five page paper that’s due tomorrow? That takes an hour/hours, place it appropriately. Tomorrow’s speech you just need to rehearse? Half an hour, due TOMORROW. Do the same for ALL of your tasks
Your priority goes like this:
5 minutes due YESTERDAY
5 minutes due TOMORROW
Half-hour due YESTERDAY
Half-hour due TOMORROW
Hours due YESTERDAY
Hours due TOMORROW
5 minutes due LATER
Half-hour due LATER
Hours due LATER
DAYS due YESTERDAY
DAYS due TOMORROW
DAYS due LATER
At this point you just go down the list in each section. If something feels especially urgent, for whatever reason - a certain professor is hounding you, you’re especially worried about that speech, whatever - you can bump that up to the top of the entire list. However, going through the list like this is what I find most efficient.
Some people do like to save the 5 minute tasks for kind of a break between longer-running tasks. If that’s what you want to try, go for it! You’re the one studying here.
So that’s how to prioritize. Now, how to actually do shit? That’s where the 20/10 method comes in. It’s simple: do stuff like a stuff-doing FIEND for 20 minutes, then take a ten minute break and do whatever you want. Repeat ad infinitum. It’s how I’ve gotten through my to do list, concussed and everything.
You’ve got this. Get a drink and start - we can do our stuff together!

study less study smart
I decided to share my notes taken from this amazing 1 hour Youtube lecture by Marty Lobdell. i really liked him and his tips, i think they are super effective and cover a lot of situations! i highly recommend it!!!!! wow
but here are the tips and examples Marty mentions, so if you don’t have the time to go through the full hour, you can just scroll down. hope this helps somebody!
Break your study time in chunks with breaks
most students lose focus at 25 minutes
it’s a mistake to keep going once you do, since you won’t actually learn anything and you’ll hate every minute of it
so when you start losing focus take a 5 minute break
do something nice like talking to someone or listening to music
it’s something you practice so with time you’ll be able to work for more time without losing focus
in the end of the study session have a big reward you look forward to
Create a study area
environment highly affects the way you act. Bedrooms are for sleeping, kitchens for eating: you’ll feel sleepy in your bedroom and hungry in the kitchen. So if you have a study area, it’ll be easier to start studying and staying focused.
study in a specific room like an office or school library if you can
if you have to study in your bedroom use a specific object you only use for studying: a lamp/desk. Make it a no-distraction, away from your bed, blank walls area.
The more active the learning, the better
80% active learning 20% passive
ask yourself: is it a concept or a fact?
learning a concept: understand/grasp/know it
put it into your own words
really think about the meaning of it
relate it with something you already know
teach somebody else. Recapitulate what you’ve learned. Talk out loud even if you don’t have anyone to teach - talk alone. Or at anyone that listens.
learning a fact: memorize it
use mnemonics
Acronyms (e.g. colours of the rainbow RoyGBiv – red orange yellow green blue indigo violet)
Coined sayings - anything popular or sayings you’ve heard since you were a child.
Interacting images – work even better if they’re weird. Creative associations make you never forget specific details. (e.g. 1 gram of fat has 9 calories: picture a fat cat – each cat has 9 lives)
any time 2 things are highly similar but not the same you will get maximal interference!! USE mnemonics!! (e.g. afferent vs efferent neurons: SAME - Sensory Afferent Motor Efferent)
Be a part of  study groups
others can help you in ways you never thought before
Recognizing VS remembering
never confuse the two
while reviewing a chapter you may recognize concepts but not actually know them
and when you get to the test you won’t be able to remember any of it
so quiz yourself without looking at it
or stop in a page of your notes/textbook and ask yourself what is the concept immediately after and before it
Get your REM Sleep
get ~8 hours so you don’t undo your studying
this is how your brain stores permanent memories
without it you’re ability to remember seriously decreases
most people don’t even begin to take the advice but it’s simple: sleep better. Do better.
There’s 162 hours in a week. There is time.
reflect on what you are doing with your time and what activities you have to prioritize to succed as a student
Taking notes is vital.
right after the class take 5 minutes to expand everything you’ve jotted down, give it depth.
NOT hours later. You won’t remember half the things you wrote down.
Ask your questions to class mates and teachers.
teachers want you to succeed and it’s more than ok to ask your question in the teacher’s office or in the next class
How to use a textbook: SQ3R technique
Survey Question Read Recite Review
Survey: skim through the entire chapter in a couple of minutes.
Raise questions: e.g. what is osmosis? What is this graphic about? What is a prototype?
it causes you to look for answers and you’ll find the information better once you actually study it after. If you intend to find something you learn it better.
Start studying for tests early.
don’t undo yourself. You should only be reviewing the days before the test. don’t leave it till the last minute!
(don’t just scroll through this!!!! really think about these methods and how you can actually implement them so you can benefit from them!!! these actually work but only if you put them into practice boo good luck!)

i think one of the biggest problems i have with getting stuff done is i assume it’s easy for other people. like “she gets up at six every morning because she’s a morning person” or “yeah, he can run five miles every day but he likes running” or “she knows five languages, her brains just wired differently than mine” when in reality it’s all about discipline for everyone. like yeah, some people have natural aptitudes for some things but anyone that’s accomplishing anything is putting in the work. achievements don’t come easy, and i think if i start acknowledging that it’s like that for everyone i can stop making excuses

10 Angry College Tips For Incoming Freshmen
(I finished my freshman year this spring with a 4.0 GPA, an off-campus research internship, and three professors contacting me suggesting that I apply for a fulbright scholarship.  These tips aren’t coming out of my ass.)
1. LISTEN TO ME WHEN I SAY THIS: YOU DO NOT NEED TO “GET INVOLVED” IN STUPID CLUBS IF YOU DON’T ENJOY THEM.  Hear “get involved! :)” for the 1000th time and just barf in your mouth a little and move on.  If you work hard and get good grades, and socialize with people on campus when you have free time (it comes more naturally than you think) YOU WILL.  BE.  FINE.  Actually better than fine.  You’ll have time to get a real job/internship, which by the way, is what the real world wants to see you prioritizing.  Moral of the story: Only join clubs if they help your personality thrive and feel healthy.  Don’t do them because you feel pressured.
2. DON’T TAKE SHIT FROM A N Y O N E. I know you’re trying to fit in and take the stance of trying to make everyone happy to make sure you’ll have plenty of friends.  But you have to realize that you literally just met these people, and they just met you.  If they create an uncomfortable environment for you that makes college harder to cope with, get them the fuck out of your life. Ain’t nobody got time for people’s high school-ass drama.
3. SKIP YOUR CLASSES SOMETIMES.  If you really have your shit together, it won’t matter.  Your school will say the amount of skips you can get away with before it harms your grade.  Use. Them.
4. BECOME THE MASTER OF WRITING ESSAYS IN ONE NIGHT.  You will have to.  I’m telling you right the fuck now.  And you can get an A, if you work your lil ass off. I’ve done it many times.
5. DON’T CARE FOR EVEN 1 SECOND WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK OF YOU.  If you wanna wear sweats and no makeup, do it.  If you want to dress up and take time to put on makeup, do it.  If you want to stay away from partying, do it.  If you want to party, have a good ass time.  If anyone has enough time to judge you, they need to be studying harder or getting a hobby.  Make yourself comfortable and happy as fuck and enjoy your time in college worry-free.
6. BE THE ASSHOLE WITH A TABLET OR LAPTOP IN LECTURE.  You won’t have time to copy it all down.  You’ll be miserable.  Just trust me.  I know studies say its more effective to write stuff down for memory, but, write them out later or something.  Learned that one the hard way.
7. DON’T REWRITE YOUR NOTES IF IT DOESN’T HELP YOU STUDY.  If you know doing that doesn’t help you memorize, don’t do it, period.  Or, if you have a collossal asston of notes (like I did) it isn’t even worth rewriting them all in the first place. I’ve fallen down that hole and lost motivation and time.  Just reread them or make flashcards or whatever.  Study for effectiveness, not aesthetic.
8. BE PREPARED FOR LAB TO GO THE “WHOLE TIME.”  Yah, you’re gonna see 3 hours on that brand-shiny-new schedule of yours and be like there’s no way it’ll go that long, right? LOL about that.  Just mentally brace yourself.  Eat and drink beforehand for the love of god we don’t need hangry people handling chemicals.
9. COMMUTING DOESN’T MAKE YOU A LONER.  Just.  No. If you live close to campus, are comfortable with commuting, and know you’ll save yourself MAJOR debt by doing it, do it and don’t feel a fucking ounce of guilt about it.  It’ll be some early mornings, but your fresh out of college broke ass will thank you, and you’ll use your time more effectively.  (Plus you get a non grimy shower like??)
10. LOVE YOUR NEW FINE ASS SELF.  College is a fresh start.  Put energy into who you have always wanted to be.  And don’t compromise that out of social anxiety and embarrassment.  You’ll be happy and thank yourself if you step out of your comfort zone to be the person you’ve always had in mind.

I remember first learning that you can cry from any emotion, that emotions are chemical levels in your brain and your body is constantly trying to maintain equilibrium. so if one emotion sky rockets, that chemical becomes flagged and signals the tear duct to open as an exit to release that emotion packaged neatly within a tear. Everything made sense after learning that. That sudden stability of your emotions after crying. How crying is often accompanied by the inability to feel any other emotion in that precise moment. And it is especially beautiful knowing that it is even possible to experience so much beauty or love or happiness that your body literally can’t hold on to all of it. So what I’ve learned is that crying signifies that you are feeling as much as humanely possible and that is living to the fullest extent. So keep feeling and cry often and as much as needed

studying is for sure the easiest when it’s the small and simple things that make it do-able! here are the small & simples for you:
write it down, then, type it up. it’s so much easier to retain information when you see it in a bunch of different ways! i always write first and type later! print out your typed up notes and mark them up!
draw, draw, draw. add diagrams wherever you can! this will appeal to your visual-learner-side and could help you discover a new way to understand the material! decorate your notes and help show what’s important with bubbles or stars or whatever you’d like!
stick post-its everywhere. plain & simple, post-it notes are integral parts of studying from coursework & textbooks! mark off sections or important info with them.
make index cards. index cards are amazing for on-the-go memorisation & things of the sort! write down important things or facts or equations and get an index card box, and keep growing your collection.
talk it out. to your parents, your friends, your pets, or even to yourself. explaining complex topics out loud can be a really great way to gauge how well you truly understand things!
