Vigilantes on the Road: Impressions on the K-drama "Taxi Driver"
Trigger Warning/Content Warning: Mention of Rape
Taking the law in their own hands driven by their hatred and hearts unwilling to forgive - yup, we've seen this before. But "Taxi Driver" isn't really that run-of-the-mill vigilantism/revenge-centric Korean drama (at least for me) but with predictability. Plot-wise, it's smashing. Cast selection is also amazing. And seeing grave offenders who deserve to be punished get the taste of their own medicine is satisfying AF.
It started with a child rapist getting out of prison after serving his sentence for measly a decade. Naturally, this caused massive uproar among the citizens and reached national headlines.
As he took his first steps on the outside world, he paused and bowed in front of the angered folks and reporters and said he had repented on his sins.
Of fucking course, it was insincere.
Tumblr media
A deluxe taxi then made its way to fetch him, and this is where the fun started.
Driving the cab is the enigmatic, sunglass-wearing Kim Do Ki (Lee Je Hoon). As he drove silently, his passenger swore to kill the people outside the jailhouse who had demanded to send him back to prison.
With Kim Do Ki's teamwork with his Rainbow Taxi squad - Ahn Go Eun (Pyo Ye Jin), Park Jin-eon (Bae Yoo Ram), Choi Kyung Goo (Jang Hyuk Jin), and their captain Jang Sung Chul (Kim Ui Sung) - he escaped the horde of reporters' cars trying to get a scoop, and surrendered the passenger criminal under the figurehead's care.
Now, I'm on episode 11, with 5 cases already solved by these vigilantes. Hats off to Lee Je Hoon, though, for his versatility in this drama 'cause we got to see him as a the acquiescent substitute teacher, illegal mobile phone dealer, a docile but avaricious ex-Silicon Valley employee, the jeotgal-loving businessman, and of course, the lieutenant turned taxi driver Kim Do Ki.
Also praises to Pyo Ye Jin's impressive portrayal of her character and her contagious emotional scenes. While APRIL's Naeun would've done a great job as well, her replacement also deserves more recognition. I first saw her as the assimilating secretary in "What's Wrong With Secretary Kim," but I didn't expect her range to be this good.
Pyo Ye Jin is Ahn Go Eun, the skilled hacker of the team who also harbors a dark past like her team members.
Tumblr media
Here also stars the inquisitive prosecutor Kang Hana, whose frizzy hair suddenly straightened on episode 9, irdk why lol. She tried to piece the puzzle of each of the 5 cases already solved before they even landed on her desk, but the culprits are missing.
Taking the matter in her own hands to investigate the cases herself, with only a CCTV footage of a mysterious deluxe taxi appearing at the crime scenes, she thinned her proximity to what really goes on beneath the taxi company.
What's glaring is that the Rainbow Taxi, specifically Jang Sung Chul, has connection to a syndicate that holds captive the criminals the squad had seized. In their turf, the captain does his sessions to reform these crooks, showing that behind his genuine benevolence lies his twisted mind.
I predict that this pursuit will cost him his life.
Tumblr media
And whatever their purpose is, vigilantism is against the law - and that just doesn't sit right with the female prosecutor.
As of writing, I'm on the edge of my swivel chair as Kang Hana takes further steps closer to the suspicious quintet.
She'd probably discover soon enough the ring and feel conflicted if she'd send them to jail, but then end up forming an alliance with the group as they share the same purpose of providing justice and doing the greater good.

Of unease, bizarre feeling of distance from reality, and questions in limbo — or how "The Memory Police" made me feel
I was swayed a bit for a moment as I scrolled the heaps of mixed reviews on "The Memory Police"—some good, some bad, some eh. But I prevailed lol.
This is the best book I've read this year so far.
Tumblr media
[There will be spoilers below!]
Set in a small, dystopian island under the totalitarian memory police, a novelist, her editor, and a former ferryman deal with the epidemic of forgetting and loss as their sense of the world gets thinner, brought by the sporadic disappearances. These disappearances come with a freebie: a person's five senses and emotional attachments about what was lost gradually disappear too.
When the unnamed book author woke up one day and the novels had disappeared, her recollection about them were also gone that she couldn't bring herself to hold a pen and write as much as she used to.
And in this island, those who remember are hunted down by the memory police.
I finished the book with whys and hows still hanging in the air, but it was such a can't-slam-the-brake-pedal ride. I got more engrossed in the story as more items and what were considered fundamental human needs cease to exist, and the titular authorities become tyrannical.
As the disappearances sped up, I felt a cloud of unease and obscurity thickening and miscellany holes burgeoning in my soul—which was why I couldn't stop until I get the answers.
It was easy to distinguish Yoko Ogawa's novel as an allegory of how people deal with loss and make the most of what remained. "The Memory Police" was delivered gently and uncomplicated, but with the apparent eerie calm that both intrigued and creeped me out.
It may have ended with a cliffhanger, but it suited the book's enigmatic nature best—or in simpler terms, some things are probably better left as they are, whether the novelist was left to rot in the basement and the people who remember left the dying island for good.

So...a slump can be contagious? Or perhaps, just in my case.
I just got off my writer's block, which lasted for a year or so, but I realized that as I struggled with my inability to hold a pen or start typing on a white spread, I was concomitantly frustrated to comprehend anything from a book nor unable to even pick up one. Forcing myself to read didn't work as well.
My writing slump went hand in hand with my reading slump. And when I finally overcame the former, I found myself alighting from that book-less ride apace.
Man, it's one of the most liberating feelings ever.

On #SlowReading
For years, I'd been constantly bothered by my slow reading, which always led to disappointment and self-doubt. Whenever I read back then - say, until just a week ago - I felt this incessant looming pressure over my head, like I had to fucking speed up as if I was in a race.
In turn, I didn't get to understand a damn from the book at all.
Looking back, for someone who claims she's a bibliophile, I saw myself mostly bugged by that imaginary race as I booed myself, and only managed to collect books more than actually read them.
You see, after all those years, it just recently dawned on me that slow reading is actually OKAY. Like???? Tf have I been pressuring myself for?
Had I relaxed and taken my time, I probably would've enjoyed reading more, 'cause I often would opt to beat myself up for my sluggishness. While I did enjoy most of the books I've read, in between those sessions were the frustrations and nose-diving self-esteem.
I can only recall less than ten reads that I truly enjoyed from the first page to last.
And thanks to the Instagram hashtag I stumbled upon recently. It made me realize that everyone has their own pace and circumstances that prolong the reading.
In my case, I finish a 300-page book in 3-5 days because:
1 - Well, work.
2 - I tend to doze off when I read, most probably due to eye fatigue after having been exposed to mobile and laptop screens for hours (I read in between work and before I sleep at night), which means,
3 - My eyes tend to hurt and twitch all of a sudden. It's a miracle, indeed, I still have no glasses on despite the daily eyesight subjection to the standard white screen (I don't like the black screen cuz that hurts my eyes more).
I do admire those who can finish a book within the day, like my dad who can amazingly end 2 or 3, closing it with an air of proud finality each time.
BUT slow reading isn't something to be embarrassed of, friends. There should be no pressure.
Savor each page, lit a cigarette, fix yourself a coffee, re-read the previous pages if you want to, picture and rewind the scenes in your head, take a nap, kiss the stopover page good night if you're ready for bed.
Slow reading not just deepens comprehension but also boosts the pleasure while doing so. So if you're a slow reader like me, take a breath and take your time.

Chacenzo endgame? I'd like to believe so
A day and a half later and my insides are still screaming.
It still feels surreal, but Vincenzo has closed its curtains—despite wanting the contrary—and my weekends will never be the same.
The Geumga Plaza tenants (I was right about them having something up their sleeves/unspeakable secrets from their past, and yes I'm proud of myself for that. Ha!) went back to their undisturbed, normal lives but while re-embracing their long-suppressed selves. And that the conclusion of their war against Babel meant carrying on with their lives unmasked, without lying to themselves who they were.
Just like how Vincenzo stayed true to his character from the get-go: that he's a villain and will always be.
Tumblr media
What I really adored about Vincenzo was the modest romantic aspect of it. The drama wasn't romance-centric, but I loved how it delivered in detail its love line flawlessly, bit by bit, in a manner that the build-up of Hong Cha Young and Vincenzo's relationship progressed exquisitely. It wasn't the usual wear-your-heart-on-your-sleeve romance or the screaming admission of affection after a jealous-induced dinner with a rival.
NO.
Hong Cha Young and Vincenzo's feelings for each other were ineffable, but were beautifully manifested through their loving gazes, touches, gestures, and their expansive understanding for each other. As both were fixed on taking down Babel while having each other's backs, Vincenzo and Hong Cha Young opted to ignore the fondness they felt growing in their gut. Not to mention that it was useless to avow it since the mafia consigliere would flee once the mission was fulfilled.
Tumblr media
Both were aware of the possible complications if they decide to progress their relationship, and they didn't want to burden each other. So they let each other go and lived their entirely different lives for the time being. Vincenzo kept in touch, though, through monthly cards of the wonted photo of a sprawling island in Malta.
Hong Cha Young was rather happy in her world, although it was conspicuous she missed her erstwhile partner despite pushing her thoughts about him at the back of her mind.
And when he finally showed himself up in front of her, the love confession once again didn't play out like the familiar K-drama plot. No I love yous and without the sappy background music—just their loving gazes once again, a few but sincere words, and wistful smiles exchanged.
Tumblr media
The kiss was the reward after the prolonged build-up (I was whisper-screaming during this part cuz who wouldn't), and it occurred at the perfect time and setting after a plethora of palatable appetizers served by episodes 1-19.
But in the end, they had to part ways once more, and their one last look at each other before Hong Cha Young watched him walk away again was a critical part one shouldn't ignore. Their tender expressions displayed the uncertainty of them to meet again, yet they were both understanding of their current circumstances.
They didn't demand anything from each other. It was bittersweet. It was beautiful. It was fitting.
Tumblr media
Vincenzo rose to become the mafia boss in Italy, while Hong Cha Young has a life and career in Korea. They were aware that one of them would have to compromise for them to be together—but the thing is neither of them wanted the other to give up his or her life.
Although I'd like to believe there is a promise that they WILL be together in the end (maybe in the epilogue that we never witnessed, or in the afterword of the script)—just not right now.
Maybe, when their lives ease up or aren't subject to constant danger.
If this possibility is a scrap, then Vincenzo wouldn't have reserved a room for Hong Cha Young at mansion in Malta or even locked his lips with her. Am I right?
Otherwise, what were the point of those?
What was the villains never break up because they're tenacious even when they love for?

the day isym said: i'm gonna fuck shit y'all up
So this is how it ends. I guess I won't be able to let this go sooner, or not ever.
Following the lives of these incredible characters since 2014 had been an astonishing journey for me. And now, we reached the end of one of the most-loved mangas, Attack on Titan/Shingeki No Kyojin—probably the only masterpiece that will touch my heart like this in this lifetime.
What an awful timing it was that chapter 139 arrived at the time I was supposed to be celebrating with my mutuals on exoltwt lol. While, overall, I rate AoT as 11 out of 10, I can't eschew that the culmination has left me qualms and questions unresolved.
Let's start with Armin thanking Eren for his sacrifices for Paradis—which equates to thanking him for committing a global genocide (bro, wtf???). This did not sit right with me, but I'm taking into account that Armin could see there was no easy way out, and that he believes achieving peace requires sacrifices, notwithstanding his altruistic nature and efforts to not completely throw away his humanity.
And I'm also considering the fact that, with the reality Paradis had, bringing off peace without lives being taken was a wishful thinking.
His idealistic worldview clashed with Eren's, and he wasn't able to present a solid resolution 'til the windup. And yet, Armin was still willing to talk things out with his best friend so they could come up with a better plan, without further casualties.
Up until the very end, he wanted PEACE.
Tumblr media
I think, this is what makes Armin admirable, contrary to what other readers paint him out to be—weak and useless. He's one of the strongest and skilled characters in AoT imo. He didn't need to be a Titan or an Ackerman. He's innately whip-smart and a natural tactician, making himself a consequential character despite his lacking combat skills.
Weighing up Armin's burdens and the mental load he carries, it hurts to be in his shoes, especially since he's the commander. He's torn between his friend's life and the rest of the world. He took the responsibility of the Rumbling aftermath to shoulder Mikasa's burden and let her live in peace.
And in the end, conflict dragged on, and he ended up with a large obligation to the people.
There were little appearances of Historia, which I initially found a bit absurd since she's among the important characters in the whole series. She didn't say anything, and her pregnancy was for what again? I was disappointed. Her bearing a child held no importance and was a random subplot.
Conversely, amid a slew of readers demanding her clarification on knowing Eren's plans from the get-go, her explanation on the matter would be unnecessary. It seemed to me she has done her part on how the story would play out. And if there was an epilogue or a succeeding set of panels, Historia might've made her comeback since her role as the queen is expected to hugely partake in peace propositions.
Tumblr media
And over and above these, the final chapter seemed...rushed? I feel like some panels need to be fleshed out more, such as the whole of Founder Ymir's feelings towards that bitchass abuser Karl Fritz. I was appalled that the root of the sufferings that prolonged for two millennia was because of her martyrdom and servitude to the king and the royal family, which she described as love.
But in reality, without having to chew this over, Ymir didn't really know what true love is. She was a slave since birth, her family was massacred by Karl Fritz, and was impregnated thrice by this murderer who never gave a shit about her. She lived a wretched life, manipulated and abused, and died after jumping in front of the spear to protect the king.
Tumblr media
Brought by fear of losing the power of the titan, he made her daughters eat Ymir's flesh and told then to bear many children. Sick fuck.
Then Ymir discovered Mikasa, who she deemed a mirror of her own. The difference, however, is that Mikasa's love for Eren isn't one-sided. And so her greatest desire to be freed from an abusive relationship was accomplished after discovering what real love is through EreMika.
Speaking of Eren, I can understand why plenty of readers condemned him. The guy, who masked himself as a peak tsundere, cold, temperamental bastard, exterminated almost the entire global population, and when asked by Armin his reason, he said he didn't know why, so from here we can assume he neither had a goal behind that warped undertaking nor did it for the greater good.
But Armin is smart, and Eren's silence was a tacit answer. The predicament seemed unsolvable, and wiping 80% of humanity is his last resort to hold off the rest of the world from attacking Paradis.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Taking also into account that he didn't mean to have his mother killed by Dina after rerouting her from Bertholdt. If he didn't, Bertholdt wouldn't end up as the Colossal Titan and Armin wouldn't have eaten him and died along the way.
Bear in mind that Eren believed Armin would save the world, but if he kicked the bucket—and had Eren, who was obviously enslaved by his destiny, altered anything in his memories—would unravel another reality unknown to Eren that could pose a bigger risk.
And the fact that he let the familiar fate dictate him meant opening a door to another door of possibilities of achieving world peace, with Armin taking the lead.
By making himself the bad guy in his story to make his friends be the heroes, the ending suggests that harmony would work out in the end.
In 139, Armin, Reiner, Pieck, Annie, Jean, and Connie were planning to make peace negotiations. And through this, there's a light at the end of the tunnel.
Tumblr media
Levi finally bidding farewell to his comrades bawled my eyes out—this is probably the saddest shit ever AoT has ever done to me, next to Erwin's death. Levi is the last one existing among his original comrades, and it sent a pang to my heart when he did his final salute, wearing a faint smile while wrapped in bandages.
Tumblr media
It was not indicated what he'd been doing post-Rumbling. The end of Titans' curse also put an end to the Ackerman bloodline's "awakened power" and above-average human strength, so he's probably a military consultant or mentor, given his amazing contribution as humanity's strongest warrior.
It was also shown he remained in the capital and is with now-grown Falco and Gabi, who both have shown their potential for a military career.
Meanwhile, unlike Levi, Mikasa chose to retire and live in her hometown. While others remark her ending as tragic (I'm guilty of this tbh), her former comrades were on their way to see her and visit Eren's grave next to the tree from their childhood, making her not entirely lonely. I wished she and Armin were in the same multiple frames of the latter panels of the final chapter as they both grieve losing Eren. But given Armin's new and bigger responsibilities for humanity, it's impossible.
Tumblr media
EreMika may not be endgame, and I may be bound to perpetual frustration of them never getting the chance to wear their hearts on their sleeves, I am satisfied with the ending—imperfect but fitting. It's actually funny that my feelings got the best of me upon reading the last chapter, and cursed at the story for not ending in absolute peace and bliss, forgetting that AoT had always been a poignant, anxiety-induced, existentialist story, and hinted at a bittersweet finale from the start.

What I really think about Jeon Yeo Bin as Hong Cha Young
I'm seeing a lot of comments (some of which are unpleasant and utter disrelish) on the web about Jeon Yeo Bin's acting in "Vincenzo".
That she's over-the-top.
That she's annoying.
And that she's nauseatingly sassy with meme-able antics at hand.
Tumblr media
Okay, hear me out.
I admit that I was initially deterred by her portrayal and her so-called excessive display of emotions like rent is due. But I sucked it up, and eventually, I discovered that Jeon Yeo Bin as Hong Cha Young is IMMENSELY different from her character as Lee Eun Jung in the slice of life drama "Be Melodramatic," and as Young Hee in the mystery film "After My Death" (where she bagged six awards!).
Tumblr media
Her character in her upcoming Netflix film, "Night in Paradise," seems give off a thumping great difference as well, way too far from her unrestrained comical projections.
Further, rumor has it that Hong Cha Young's personality—being over-the-top, annoying, and overly brazen—is under the director or the writer's command. As a matter of fact, I see the same pattern in Honey Lee's character in "The Fiery Priest". Note: "Vincenzo" and "The Fiery Priest" have the same screenwriter, Park Jae Bum. So we're probably connecting something here, right?
Granting that this is case, and honestly with her previous works alone, it's safe to say that Jeon Yeo Bin has an expansive acting range.
Tumblr media
And as "Vincenzo" progressed, I gradually appreciated Hong Cha Young and found charms in her uniqueness. Simultaneously, she evolved into a lawyer who fights for justice, and her chemistry now more congruous to her partner in crime.

I had a dream last night. It was like a movie stuffed with unorthodox scenarios and incompatible pieces of events. Then, while I was lost in my reverie—floating—I asked myself why it's difficult to think when I try to draft a story when I'm awake, and yet my imaginations seem boundless when I'm asleep.
So I asked myself, as I drifted steadily in that endless blue, Should I stay asleep so I can write forever?

Let me just share that this is my favorite scene from episode 9. I tried to unriddle Hong Cha Young's profound words yet apt — It’d feel like you’re someone from a very distant world. Like someone trapped on a mural or in a faded newspaper.  — when Vincenzo asked her if she'd cut ties with him if she found out he had killed in the past.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Being partners allows her to see Vincenzo as someone who cares and fights the injustice. But his dark past, once spilled, will confuse her and make her think of him as unreal. Vincenzo’s juxtaposition of his past and present will cause Cha Young at a stand.

Vincenzo-ing and (already) obsessed: First impressions on the new tvN drama
Legal jargons, attractive suits, polished shoes, and sleek wheels are just a few of the things that will usher you in the newly-aired legal-slash-mafia-themed K-drama, “Vincenzo”. Headlined by the superstar Song Joong Ki, “Be Melodramatic” actress Jeon Yeo Bin, and 2PM member and “Save Me” star Taecyeon, it’s safe to say that the tvN/Netflix show is off to a good start. As of March 2, “Vincenzo” reached a total of 10.2% in viewership ratings for its 4th episode, a 2% increase from its 3rd.
Tumblr media
I’m not going to deny, though, that Song Joong Ki as the main lead was a slab of a reason why I decided to plunge back into K-dramaland despite my busy schedule. Its genres were a paramount enticement, given that I really am into legal dramas filled with cracking mysteries, and its mafia trope excited me to great extent. The synopsis intrigued me, and I probably would’ve seen it even if Song Joong Ki wasn’t the one to play Vincenzo Cassano.
The show keeps getting better and better and I can’t wait for more things to unfold before my eyes!
EPISODES 5 & 6 SPOILERS
Vincenzo Cassano is a mafia legal adviser who decided to return to his homeland, South Korea, after his boss’ death. He then ended up in a rundown building where he met the righteous lawyer Hong Yu Chan (Yoo Jae Myung) and his daughter, the tenacious attorney Hong Cha Young (Jeon Yeo Bin) from a big-shot law firm Wusang, where the clients are mostly the rich, powerful, and nefarious. Taecyeon portrays Jang Jun-woo who poses as a simpleton intern at Hong Cha Young’s office but is actually the secret boss of the Babel Group.
Right off the bat, the drama gifted me with a good amount of comedy as each character was being introduced. I also love the cinematography and aesthetic of the show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vincenzo and Hong Yu Chan, having the same desire to keep the building in spite of dissimilar reasons, joined forces to fight the Babel Group that has been trying to acquire the property via dirty means. Hong Cha Young, on the other hand, works to defend the organization despite obvious knowledge of its illicit operations.
The initial episodes delivered a lighter plot, until mood darkened and got serious when Hong Yu Chan was killed on the 3rd episode. As if a bomb was dropped, I didn’t expect his character to be killed off that soon. But I must say that Hong Yu Chan played a significant part in Vincenzo’s viewpoint and in bringing him and Hong Cha Young together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bereaved and believing that there was more to her father’s death, Hong Cha Young resigned from Wusang and teamed up with Vincenzo to seek justice. This is where Jeon Yeo Bin’s role began to frequently enter the picture, showing her brazenness and determination to restore her father’s honor. Jeon Yeo Bin is a fresh face, and her character slightly put me off at the beginning. But I soon enough got accustomed to Hong Cha Young’s quirks and found her charming, not gonna lie.
Tumblr media
Hong Cha Young and Vincenzo eventually discovered that Choi Myung Hee (Kim Yeo Jin), the villainous prosecutor for 20 years and newly-recruited senior attorney at Wusang, was the mastermind of the murder of Hong Yu Chan. Although, I must say that I found it weird and unrealistic when Hong Cha Young faced her again as if the murder didn’t happen. (Like??????)
Nevertheless, the duo’s chemistry comes about as they fight against the Babel Group and set its sprawling lab of RDU-90, a lethal drug, in flames.
Tumblr media
As the inferno went on, Jang Jun-woo emerged as the real, wicked boss of Babel Group. While the revelation was indeed a bolt from the blue, I had an inkling that there was more to Taecyeon’s character from the get-go, because I was somehow unconvinced that he was just going to be a dumbo intern from abroad throughout the series. He likes to cling to Hong Cha Young while masking his real identity, which suggests that he’s infatuated to her. The way he looks at Hong Cha Young and Vincenzo together also solidifies the hypothesis he has a crush on the feisty lady attorney.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, the 5th episode also had a moment of fluff and suggested the love line between Hong Cha Young and Vincenzo when the latter won in their bet, and smiled warmly as he stared at Hong Cha Young while her eyes were shut.
Surely, there are more of these moments to come, probably mushy or straightforward, who knows? But right now, the epic duo is busy as the plaintiff’s legal team, set to meet Kim Yeo Jin at the court, and now with full support from the previously skeptical tenants of the rundown building.
Tumblr media
The episode ended with Vincenzo and Hong Cha Young making a grand entrance with their stylish outfits and sleek sports car, and the courthouse steps their fashion runway.
