AO3 Wrapped 2020
I was not actually tagged by anyone in particular, but I’m going to say @jenwryn tagged me since she said anyone could do it if they wanted to! <3 And I want to play this because it looks fun, and I’ve broken a lot of my own fic milestones this year. (I’ve waited until now to post this, because I didn’t want to ruin the surprise for my SS giftee, although I’m nearly certain they’ve known who I am from the get go...But I’m trying to be good!).
Total Word Count: 43,599 - This is the most words of fic I’ve ever written in a year! My previous record was 23,836 words in one year — and I only started writing at the end of May this year! Not nearly as many words as other people have written, but I’m pretty proud of myself.
Top 5 fics by word count: (for reference, the longest fic I’d ever written before this year not including my weird long tenipuri crack fic hahaha was 3,947 words)
1. Dreaming in Threes (6,595 words) - An Wenyi/Gao Yingjie/Qiao Yifan, getting together, my SS gift fic! My very first time to write polyamory, which was super difficult for me, but I did it! This one was a bit difficult to get started on, but I’m quite pleased with the result. :D
2. Good Influence (6,270 words) - Gao Yingjie/Qiao Yifan, getting together, very self-indulgent drunken confession fic. I’d had this idea ever since finishing the LA, and I just snuck it into a writer’s month prompt. :3
3. After Party (5,664 words) - An Wenyi/Qiao Yifan, AWY & QYF do a little something something extra special *wink* *wink* for Qiao Yifan’s birthday. My first time to write an explicit fic.
4. Brilliant Hearts (4,255 words) - An Wenyi/Qiao Yifan, pre-relationship. This is the fastest I’ve ever written something of this length. Usually I make up some type of outline before I even begin writing, but I didn’t do that with this and just sort of let it write itself. I have really good memories of writing this one!
5. Warm Up Those Cold Hands (3,340 words) An Wenyi & Qiao Yifan, Gao Yingjie/Qiao Yifan. Aka the fic where I accidentally baited myself into shipping AWY/QYF, and my first fic for TKA! At the time of writing this, I’d only watched the LA so there is some accidental canon divergence here, and if I were writing this now, I’d probably do a few things differently, but I still like this piece for what it is.
Top 5 fics by kudos:
1. It runs in the family - Gen, Ye Xiu & Ye Qiu & their father. I’ve affectionately dubbed this my ‘Lord Grim’s Daddy’ fic. Another idea that spawned from the LA, and I’m pleasantly shocked with the response it received. My first fic ever to break 100 kudos!
2. Warm Up Those Cold Hands - Same fic as above. I’m proud of it for making it on both lists!
3. Nothing but the best! - Implied Wang Jiexi/Ye Xiu, flower shop AU, Tiny Herb centric and Ye Xiu being shameless. Fill for a writer’s month prompt, and I never would have thought to write a flower shop AU if it wasn’t for that prompt.
4. Glory Never Fades - Gao Yingjie/Qiao Yifan, basically what would happen if Qiao Yifan decided he wanted to stay in Hangzhou/City H with Happy after retiring. How would he and Gao Yingjie make that work? This is probably the fic I have the most feelings about. I want more qzgs retirement fic!!!
5. Still too early - Gen, Ye Xiu & Happy, Prince of Tennis AU. XD This was a fill for the writer’s month prompt High School AU, and I found condensing everything down to high school ages pretty limiting. Part of me wants to continue this just so I can have data tennis player Luo Ji and wild tennis player Baozi, lol.

“Fuji, I’ve always been grateful to you since our first year of middle school. Thank you for supporting us, and Seigaku.”

If these words were said by anyone other than Tezuka, I would’ve called it a mere pleasantry. But this is Tezuka, and he’s talking to Fuji. Theirs is a relationship of things unsaid; I can’t see them wasting words on pleasantries. So, seeing thus quote makes me rethink how I perceive the two of them. I’ve always assumed that it’s Tezuka doing Fuji the favor, inciting him out of his apathy, but here Tezuka seems to imply that it was Fuji who cast off his own apathy for his team.
Several days and countless theories later, I have a new character interpretation/headcanon/rambling/almost-fic/essay/something about Fuji’s arc, and why Tezuka succeeded in driving him, in the end.
In fanon, Fuji is portrayed with a careless, mischievous, devil-may-care attitude. What’s surprising is that some portray him as kind of… manipulative and sadistic, in the literal sense of the word. It’s ironic because when you think about it, Fuji has consistently shown that he cares for people over tennis. He forfeits a game because of Kawamura’s wrist, he humiliates Mizuki because Mizuki puts tennis over Yuuta’s wellbeing, he goes all-out against Jirou because Jirou embarrassed Yuuta, he wants to teach Akaya a lesson because Akaya hurt Echizen. Fuji only cares about winning when the people he loves are involved–otherwise, tennis is just fun and games. Tezuka, I think, understands this perfectly.
I think this is why in the end, Fuji only finds his motivation after Tezuka gets hurt in the match against Atobe. In that match, Fuji sees that if someone doesn’t step up soon, Tezuka will put himself on the line again and again to ensure Seigaku’s victory. And because Fuji can’t stand to see the people he cares about hurt, he decides to step up–and so does Ryoma, albeit for different reasons.
Let’s talk about Ryoma for a second. Unlike Fuji, Tezuka and Ryoma are kindred souls. They both know what it is to put everything on the line for victory. Tezuka has seen how Ryoma behaves when he’s pushed to his limits, he’s seen Ryoma hurt, and he’s seen Ryoma persevere and win despite an injury. He sees himself in Ryoma, and so when Ryoma demands that Tezuka hand over the responsibility of being a pillar, it’s very easy for Tezuka to concede. Indeed, for the rest of Nationals, it’s Ryoma who plays in Singles 1, while Tezuka relegates himself to less pivotal positions.
Fuji, though. Tezuka has asked Fuji to step up before, and Fuji has refused. In fact, he told Tezuka he’d rather get taken out of the regulars. Unlike Ryoma, there are things Fuji still needs to prove to Tezuka, like that even when backed into a corner, he will still fight. Not because someone he loves is hurt, not for revenge, but for nothing else but victory. If he can’t do that, Fuji will never be someone that Tezuka counts on.
Unfortunately, Fuji’s breadth of talent and counter puncher playstyle means that Fuji has fewer opportunities to prove himself. As a counter puncher, Fuji wins by finding flaws, taking advantage of the opponents’ mistakes to unleash his counters and take points. The passive nature of his playstyle means that Fuji’s performance can only be as good as his opponents’ abilities. Without great opponents, Fuji can’t shine.
Then along comes Shiraishi with his perfect, flawless tennis. The absolute worst opponent a counter puncher can ever dream of. Honestly, one has to wonder what Ryuuzaki-sensei was thinking, because pitting any counter puncher against Shiraishi is a critical mistake. Based on Tezuka’s reactions during this match, I think he knows this, too.
Fortunately, Fuji is not the same person he was 200 chapters ago. When Shiraishi drives him into a corner, Fuji responds by baring everything he has: his heart, soul, and most importantly, his tennis.
…and then, after all that, he lost.
But in that loss, he proved that like the rest of Seigaku, Fuji can fight for victory and nothing else. He proceeded to come back from a 5-0 lead against a playstyle that’s practically designed to suppress his. He fought to the very last second, and he showed Tezuka, hey, this is the real me. This is everything I have. You can count on me.
At the very next match, Tezuka relegates himself to Singles 3. He puts Fuji in Singles 2 instead.

This commercial is a parody of Riki Choshu’s commercial, with Atobe having the same lines and cuts as him.
“Offering me to do this commercial showed me how Morinaga Milk Industry has a great eye for quality. It’s my first time shooting a commercial, but it went easier than I had expected. I thought it’d be a little harder. Well, this much is easy. It was quite the experience. In the commercial, I dressed like a cow as the “Fairy of Miloha” and it just proved to me that anything will look good on me,” he says, with a satisfied look on his face.

According to the staff, Atobe-sama dashingly appeared at the studio on his own personal helicopter. He pulled off all the shots in one take, showing everyone his massive potential and flawlessness. Hey, if it's not too much trouble, could you talk to us about the prefixes and suffixes used on the show? Like, why does everyone call Yan with an A-prefix? Why is Zhuo Zhi and Lu Xia always called with their family name but Mu Siyang sometimes just gets called Siyang? Subtitles don't really show us how these conventions are used and I'm curious~
Sure I can!! Real life has been A Lot these days (...months) but I'll try to make a post about it! It's a good idea to have one somewhere in the worldwide web, isn't it? I'm low-key surprised there isn’t one already - not that I know of, but in this tiny fandom I’m pretty sure I’d know if someone had made one.
I’ll give you a quick answer here but stay tuned for a proper post as real life allows me!
I have no idea if there’s a linguistic reason for that, but in Chinese, when you call people, you never call them just one syllable. “Xia” or “Zhi” sounds... wrong. Idk. Language quirk. “Siyang” or “Jiale” are a-okay because they’re both two-syllable names: “Si + yang” and “Jia + le”. However, “Lu + Xia” and “Zhuo + Zhi” both have two syllables, so full name it is.
By that rule, you can’t call Yan Zhiming just “Yan.” But as you know, there are prefixes in Chinese (and suffixes too, but those are more common in historical dramas.) A- is one of them. It can be used by someone older just because they’re older, or it can be used by someone the same age as you to indicate familiarity. “A-Yan” is two syllables, so it’s fine to call him that. You’ll notice second and first year students don’t call him A-Yan, though - he’s older, so it’d sound weird af at best and outright rude at worst. They call him xuezhang - a term of respect to someone who’s in a higher grade than you at your school (similar to but more specific than Japanese senpai.)
