I’ve been saying that I want a job in the gaming industry but I haven’t put as much thought as I should have towards what I should DO in said industry. I went and got my degree in Comp Sci and just kinda stopped thinking critically about it. That being said, I looked at this article that broke down the different “sectors” of the gaming industry pretty well and searched within. Of these, while I believe I am capable of being a tester, I’ve narrowed my long term goals to one of two areas: Designer or Programmer.
By narrowing down to these two areas, I can look into jobs in those areas. A designer needs to be both creative and technical, which I THINK I am due to my time in school and creating characters and worlds for my friends to play with in Pathfinder. My weakness here is that I can be a bit scatterbrained at times, running off several steps ahead of the proper pacing of development because I had a “creative surge” and followed it.
As for being a programmer, I’ve learned the basics of several programming languages throughout my years of academia and even managed to put some of that to work in a tangible way. Now, the problem here is that, when it comes to being a programmer in the gaming industry, there are SO many types of programmers that it is required that one specialize in order to have any success. What would I be best at? AI? Interface? Network? Going this path would require me to pick one and “git gud” at it before I can be considered a competitive option for hiring.
I had the pleasure of chatting with someone actually working in this industry and they posed this question: What could I spend 40 hours a week, 5 days a week getting paid for that I wouldn’t hate. At the end of the day, even though my degree in Computer Science heavily lends itself to a background as a programmer, I think I’d be much happier as a designer. Designing a game does require technical knowledge, so it isn’t like the degree would go to waste, and as much as I adore creating my characters and towns, the hard part would be translating this into a tangible skill. Plus, through the work of designing, my programming skill would begin to favor particular areas. Maybe I’ll find that I love writing code for AI? That being said, I will begin work on my first major project today before doing a stream tonight. I know hardly anyone follows this blog, but I hope to consider this the first step of a journey taking me from unemployed dreamer to indie household name or the credits of the next AAA title.

An awesome time indeed...
School has started, I have moved in and begun attending class, and (probably most relevant to this blog), I have internet access! I will begin regular posting, but a few things have changed. I still play League of Legends, but have taken a hiatus from World of Warcraft. In its place, I have started playing Elsword (connected to my Steam account), Minecraft, and have a 360 here with me, so hopefully I can start posting more about the gaming community, the games I play, and pretty much anything I can post about. For now though, I must rest...game on everyone!

Not dead yet...
Hey guys, just chiming in for a bit about what's been going on in my life video-game wise, I just finished an amazing game. Metal Gear: Revengence is, for lack of better terms, fucking amazing! What caught me off guard most was not the combat or the story, both of which I loved, but the music. I found myself humming and singing the boss themes long after I had converted them to hamburger. Get a hold of this game if you can, I can guarantee you will enjoy it.

The Renaissance Gamer enters the fray!
I have found another game to play online! Awesomenauts! It's an MOBA, but...well, just check out the trailer. I play it through my Steam account, so my name is the same (ninja_tank25). Unfortunately, as I still do not have an internet connection of my own, my time there will be limited till about late August. Till then, happy gaming everyone!

Day 7 - Favorite Carry
Hell...yes...Tryndamere! I play him top lane, and I swear this champion is beastly. His early game is "meh" but a few kills, an Infinity Edge, a Bloodthirster, and a Ravenous Hydra later and he can damn near charge into the enemy team and score a penta. (Disclaimer: Don't actually do that unless you are SURE you can get the kills, otherwise you just get blown up.) His passive makes him even more deadly, granting him an additional 35% critical chance on top of what you already have at max fury, add on Bloodlust at max level, and at low health you get an additonal 60 AD. Oh, and how could I forget Undying Rage? Just when you think you've finally killed him, he just keeps on attacking and destroying your team. Every time I pick him to go top lane, I get ganks at level 1, which fail because I actually buy wards, but my point is this, Tryndamere is a late-game juggernaut, and in this summoner's opinion, one of the best carries in the game.

Day 6 - Favorite Jungler
I am fairly new to the Jungler role, but out of the champions I have tried, Warwick is by far the most fun. I like his versatility (can be geared AP or AD) and ability to survive things that he really shouldn't. AP Warwick's Hungering Strike is insane, taking down opponent's health down in fourths, thirds, or even halves and giving him incredible sustain. AD Warwick benefits greatly from his Passive, Eternal Thirst, and his ult, while seriously disruptive as AP Warwick, becomes a death sentence for AD Warwick. I like to play around with builds for characters, and Warwick permits me to do that with a pretty high degree of success...and I have to admit that it is a little gratifying to see laners flash away at the mere sight of me.

Hello there followers!
I start school in about six weeks, and since I will be on campus, that means internet, which means more posts...and not just the occasional ranting about a game, but hopefully streams, videos, and observations about the gaming industry as a whole. I swear, I don't mean for this to turn into a League of Legends specific blog, but I feel like the 30 days of League is a good way for me to develop a posting pattern and schedule for other things.
Outside of that though, I have picked up Dragon's Dogma and Saint's Row the Third...it's gonna be an interesting few weeks.

Day 5 - Favorite AP Champion
I don't play mid lane often, let alone AP champions, but when I do, I always go for Veigar. His kit is so great it feels unfair at times. His passive increases his mana regen based on how much mana is missing, His Q (Baleful Strike) grants AP every time he uses it to kill a minion or champion, which scales 60% into the ability itself. Dark Matter hits as hard as some ultimates and has a 100% AP scaling, meaning that it HURTS late game. Event Horizon can lock down multiple champions, even if aiming it takes some practice to use properly, and is a great set up for Dark Matter or some help from your teammates. Finally, the most broken ultimate I've ever seen, Primordial Burst. He damn near counters every other mid-lane champion because it not only scales 120% of his AP (Which should be really high if you've been farming his Q properly), but 80% of the targets' AP. Late game, he can one-shot enemy AP champs and anyone unfortunate enough to not be packing MR.

Day 4 - Favorite Tank
I don't see him very often anymore, I don't even normally play tanky, but I like Amumu as a tanky jungler. His Bandage Toss is excellent for locking down enemy champions for your teammates, and with Tantrum and Despair, he can consistently damage his opponents while his teammates lay down the damage. Despair in particular is pretty awesome because on top of its damage, it deals a % of the enemy champs' health per second, which is great against enemy tanks. I absolutely love his ultimate, Curse of the Sad Mummy because, combined with his tankiness and his passive, Cursed Touch (decreases enemy MR on AA), he can break the entire team during a teamfight. It is a 2 second lockdown, and it doesn't exactly hit softly (350 at max rank + 80% AP).

Day 3 - Least Favorite Champion
Ok, fuck this guy. Now that I have said that, let me explain myself. I know most people are gonna put Teemo (I almost put Caitlyn here), but I just really do not like fighting this guy, especially when he is jungling for the enemy. Getting ganked by Hecarim makes me rethink my already insignificant career as a League player. Why do I hate him so?
The fact that this bastard gets bonus AD for movement speed is insane to me. Without boosts of any kind (items, runes, or masteries) his movement speed at lvl 18 is 345. (345 x .25 = 86.25) By the time he hits lvl 18, he has AD greater than an Infinity Edge!  On top of that, most people I see jungle with him pick up Boots of Mobility, This isn't too bad when he is in combat, as the boots will only boost his Movement Speed by 45, but that first hit from being "out of combat" has a movement speed boost of 105! (450 x .25 = 112.5). That's more than a max-stacked Bloodthirster.  His Devastating Charge increases his movement speed even more, so by this point, he is hitting like a speeding truck. Finally, even if it doesn't do a lot of damage, his ultimate, Onslaught of Shadows, fears anyone standing at the end of it, so that's 1 second where all you can do is take his Movement Speed enhanced attacks, primarily Rampage, to the face. There is a way to beat him, maybe even counter all of this, but that doesn't change the fact that this champion has practically traumatized me.
