To be perfectly honest, Ozai/Zhao isn't a crack ship, and in fact given Zhao's track record, it's one of the more plausible explanations for his career trajectory.

A couple of my favourite ‘Ozai is probably gay’ moments:
Ursa, love her or hate her, is gorgeous. We all know it. Like it’s incredibly obvious. She has one of the best designs in the main series. Immediately cut to Ozai side-eyeing her not unlike my cat and telling her she has nothing he wants. Oop 🤭
Straight people do not interact with, look at or touch other people of the same sex like this, even if they’re going to immediately follow it up by being petty.
How much of this is me joking and how much is me being serious is up to you~

Ok, here is a confession: I am a sucker for Hussar uniforms.
These Fire Nation uniform sketches are based of on the traditional Hungarian hussar uniform from the 18th-19th century. Red was not a common uniform color but commanders, high ranked officers could wear it with gold braiding.

As requested, Zhao's undoubtedly chaotic teenage daughter
He wants her to follow in his footsteps and takes it upon himself to teach her bending.
Fortunately he's also an absolute nerd that likes history and the like so he doesn't get up in arms if she takes more of an interest in arts rather than being a soldier, however he would be disappointed if his child didn't become some sort of military legend.
He continues to be over protective, that is, until she's a capable bender and has proven herself able to defend herself. Which she can absolutely do. Zhao isn't a very good teacher, but his daughter is very much chaotic and ambitious like he was at that age, so she enjoys the fast paced lessons in flaming violence.
Zhao would absolutely take her side if any other adults complained to him about her, he'd probably get in a fight over it.
Quite frankly, if anybody ever hurt her, it would be a race between them to see who could maim the guilty party first.

I honestly haven't given a lot of thought to Zhao as a dad before but I'm excited for it.
He never told anybody about it, but he was worried he would be a bad father. He's gone to great lengths to try and be the best dad he can possibly be.
He never actually considered he might end up with a daughter, he'd been fretting so much over how to be a good father to a son, he never thought about how to raise a daughter.
He's always very, very careful when he holds her. She's so tiny and fragile looking, he doesn't want to hurt her by accident.
He's extremely protective. He's apprehensive to let anybody else hold her because he's worried they're going to drop her or something else catastrophic.
The first time she calls him Papa he just about keels over. She's precious, and he wasn't prepared to care this much about another human being. Yeah, Zhao is genuinely surprised he loves his own child. It feels on brand for a man who is so awful with his emotions.
As soon as she gains the ability to walk he becomes infinitely more paranoid, and she becomes infinitely more of a nightmare. She takes after him, she's chaotic and too clever. Zhao keeps anything easily grabable on the top shelf.
He plays with her a lot, takes her to the park, he starts teaching her early about fish and various oceanography things. By the time she's 6 she knows nautical measurements better than regular ones.
