Never played a Ys game but I've been meaning to. I don't know which one I should start tho. What would be your suggestions?
The Ys series are about the many adventures of Adol Christin, which are for the most part not connected to each other. There's a timeline for what order the games take place, like in Ys VIII's prologue Adol briefly has the endgame sword from Ys V before accidentally losing it, since the VIII takes place directly after V.
This isn't necessary to know at all, it's just for fun references.
Personally Ys 1 & 2 Chronicles is a big favorite of mine and it also happens to be on sale now on Steam. The two first games tends to be referenced more than the others, so it's nice (but not necessary) to at least have played those before the others.
I'm a fan of the bump combat in the early games, but if it's not for you, feel free to jump to one of the other games with a gameplay style that appeals more to you.
I do recommend giving the bump combat a honest try though, even if you're not feeling it immediately.
