I chose this photographer because of these four photos I will show above. They show liminal space photography, which usually leaves the viewer with an uneasy, familiar feeling, and he puts a bright light and airy twist on it. Liminal space is a place of transition, a threshold between two points, signaling the end of one time or space, and the beginning of another. I too, wanted to take liminal space shots but while, his is bright and open, I want mine to be dark and mysterious.

Jeffery’s inspiration comes from the Maine coastline along with “intertidal zones” and liminal spaces. He says: “Aside from the ocean itself, my greatest inspirations are the intertidal zones – those shifting, liminal spaces – and the patinated surfaces found therein, created by both the growth and the decay that takes place where land meets the sea.”

Jeffery layers his images, to show a slightly decaying scene mixed in with bright colors, and waves crashing through doorways, and corridors. The coast makes its way through these old, vintage settings, like walking through your late grandparent’s beach house. Seeing it fall apart leaves you a little uneasy, but graces you with a nostalgic feeling; what was it like in its prime…full of people?

All the example photos I chose include a door, window, or cut way, showing that passageway to transition. All doors and windows are open as well showing peeling age. The decay bringing uneasiness as previously stated. The coast is coming into these homes, almost blending and becoming a part of them, they are now one, in a coastal home, of liminal space.
