Best Photography/Video Gear for Travel
The following article will be primarily about Canon cameras that I’ve personally used. Links to purchase these cameras via B&H are in the titles of each section.
Why Canon?
Canon has always been my favorite camera brand. Growing up, my mom shot with Canon cameras in her treks around the world. My first video camera on DV tape was the Canon ZR800! Canon overall as a brand makes the right steps when it comes to business and brand awareness. in short, they have something for everyone, with affordable camera bodies and lenses. Some of the following lenses have been mentioned in a previous post.
Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR
Light weight, affordable, and powerful, this DSLR is on par with its bigger Rebel counterparts. Boasting an 18 MP sensor and 1080p video @ 24fps, 720p video @ 60fps, this camera is a beast. An alternative to its much bigger brothers and sisters, the SL1 offers powerful low light and day light shooting scenarios with up to 4 fps and its wide ISO range of 100-12800 (expandable to 25600). Weighing at only 0.8 lbs (13 oz), this camera is the ideal travel camera that can hold any Canon EF and EF-S lens.
10-18mm
An ultrawide lens for the EF-S camera systems, this lens has IS (Image Stabilization) that will definitely help keep both video and photos in focus. Equivalent to 16-25mm on a full frame 35mm sensor, this lens is a must have for APS-C shooters.
18-55mm
The trust kit lens. It has IS and can stop down to f/3.5. If you’ve ever bought a crop sensor camera, this lens usually comes with it. It isn’t as sharp as the other lenses here, but it gets the job done.
24mm f/2.8
Although manufactured in 1988, this lens is sharp as hell. It’s newer brother the 24mm f/2.8 IS and 28mm f/2.8 IS, both have IS so it’s a must have for video shooters. But if you ever find this version of the lens for a good deal, make sure you pick it up! Perfect travel lens to get that sweet, sweet bokeh.
Also, don’t forget to check websites like KEH and Ebay for used/refurbished Canon gear! Canon’s website also has a section to purchase refurbished Canon camera bodies and refurbished Canon lenses.

The Best Malasadas in Hawaii
Ever since I was a kid, my parents took me to Hawaii. I remember waking up one summer morning in the hotel room of the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani with my brother and parents. My brother and I (for some reason) desperately wanted donuts and my parents stepped out promptly to pick some up. When they returned, they were holding a pink box with blue cursive writing on it. “Leonard’s donuts!” I exclaimed, unaware. We opened the box and inside were what looked like donuts but contained no hole in the middle. “Just try it” my mom urged. I reluctantly bit into it. It was the sugariest, fluffiest, warmest most heartwarming non-donut I ever had in my life. “What is this?” I asked my parents. My dad responded, “It’s a malasada. From Leanoard’s. Best place in Oahu to get them.” That phrase stuck with me ever since. And so every time I head back to Oahu, I always have to stop by Leonard’s at least once.
This past April, my girlfriend and I decided to take a quick vacation to Hawaii. She’s never been and I wanted to show her Waikiki. The pictures featured in this article have all been taken from that trip. The first place I took her to was Leonard’s Bakery. We just had to have a malasada. We Ubered there from our AirBnb. Our Uber driver was an expat from the UK who fell in love with Hawaii after his first visit. Just imagine the cockiest, snobbiest British accent when reading this quote from him, “Let’s see here... you’re going to Leonard’s?! This early in the mornin’? HAHAHAHA Why there? It’s too early?! You’re kidding me! No but seriously, Leonard’s is great!! hahahahaha.” Not sure why he laughed and scoffed at us so much. I love malasadas and Leonard’s is THE place to go. The place has looked the same ever since the 50s and I’m glad to see it still has that classic look.
What is a Malasada?
A malasada is a Portugese donut without a hole Originating on the Madeira Islands in Portugal, malasadas were made to prepare for Lent on Shrove Tuesday. They originally were made from the leftover lard and sugar in Catholic homes. It wasn’t until 1878 when Portuguese laborers from Madeira and Azores came to Hawaii that malasadas became a staple in Hawaiian culture. Light, fluffy, covered in sugar and sometimes filled with pinapple, mango, guava, malasadas have become a huge part of Hawaiian culture.
Leonard’s Bakery
Leonard’s Bakery story according to their website:
“In June 1882 the British sailing ship ‘Monarch' brought Arsenio and Amelia DoRego from San Miguel Island, Portugal to Maui, Hawai'i under contract to work the sugar cane fields. Some 33 years later, their grandson Leonard was born. In 1946 Leonard and his wife Margaret moved to Honolulu with their daughter Diane, age 8. Leonard worked at Snowflake Bakery until he founded Leonard's Bakery℠ in 1952.Leonard and Margaret were no strangers to hard work, both coming from very large families. The bakery prospered. Not long after opening, Leonard's mother suggested making malasadas for Shrove Tuesday – a Portuguese tradition. Although thinking it may be too ethnic, Leonard's bakers complied. Malasadas were a huge hit. And, the appetite for malasadas in Hawaii was born.“

Jeremy’s Travel Gear 2017
My recent trip to Japan brought a lot of challenges when it came to video and photography. I brought my trust t3i with me and wanted to get a lot out of it. Above is a photo of my travel gear which I shot The Sounds of Kansai and my vlog series with. Why do I shoot with Canon? I prefer their lens lineup, their camera prices and their color profiles. Not to mention, their autofocus is king when compared to other camera brands.
Canon EOS Rebel t3i
Known as the 600D in some places, the t3i is a Rebel series camera which boasts an 18 megapixel sensor. That may seem like less than what the current camera lineup boasts, but it’s never about the body. Lenses are what make these bodies shine. See below for my lens lineup. I bought this camera back in 2013 and immediately fell in love with it. This camera helped me fall in love with cinematography and my passion.
Canon 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6
I actually bought this lens in Japan. I went to Yodobashi camera and picked this up. I couldn’t resist. If you follow this channel, you know I do a little vlogging and having an ultra wide lens really helps keeps things in focus. Highly recommend since its lightweight and super sharp!
Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
My kit lens. The lens that has been my bread and butter for the longest time. While not the sharpest tool in the shed, this little guy has been the most hardworking lens in my lineup.
Canon 24mm f/2.8
Released in December 1988, I actually picked up this lens from Fujiya Camera in Nakano Broadway in Tokyo for about $180USD. This has been the most used prime lens in my lineup for the longest time. It’s light, portable and provides that crisp and clean f/2.8 f-stop to give you some beautiful bokeh. The new version comes with IS (Image Stabilization) but I can’t give up my little lens just yet.
Sigma 24mm f/1.4
The biggest, heaviest and most expensive lens in my lineup, this beast has provided me with very clear and focused shots throughout my trip. At f/1.4, this is the fastest lens I have. It gives me 6 whole stops apart from my other Canon lens. I highly recommend Canon if you’re looking for cheaper alternatives to their more expensive Canon counterparts.
Audio-Technica AT8024 Stereo/Mono Camera-Mount Microphone
I picked this mic up recently for this trip. It was first used in the Honolulu Vlog and every video after. It has been nothing but a pleasure to use this mic. I highly recommend this to any filmmaker as this is a MUST have. It can switch between both Stereo and Mono modes. Compared to the RODE counterparts, the Audio Technica mic uses a single AA battery to power it for 46 hours straight. If that’s not enough to convince you, then that’s it!
Check out The Sounds of Kansai below which was shot with the t3i, Sigma 24mm lens, 10-18mm, 18-55mm and recorded with the Audio Technica AT8024 mic.
