Was very disturbing to see cnn describe the CUNY protest as initially peaceful but taking a violent turn, thus needing violent remediation, when protestors occupied a building (trespassing) and 'chained themselves to the door and locked arms'. Iconic peaceful protest strategies are being so explicitly characterized as violence. It's becoming more and more bare.

And like look you have a lot of positive qualities but I don't think this is working anymore. We both know it hasn't been good for a long time.

Deeply dispiriting post: testimony from a DOJ antitrust action reveals the entire book publishing industry is celebrity memoirs, established franchise authors like James Patterson, children's books, Bibles, and back catalogues (e.g. Lord of the Rings). Publishing new authors is not even a rounding error; you get the sense it's only done anymore out of a vague sense of obligation, and the moment one of the Big Five decides on the defect strategy, and stops doing that to save a few more bucks, it will end entirely.

Anyway I think it's crazy that for thousands of years people just had this deep yearning to draw weird diagrams and contemplate crytpic hidden truths and for 99% of that time it was 100% nonsense and then in the last hundred years we invented quantum mechanics and category theory and oh shit it turns out there are cryptic truths in weird diagrams. just had to draw the right ones.
