He shakes his head gently and puts my credit card away to be used on something more important. "This is not the end. You're taking a turn for the better." There is no hint of malice in Changsheng's eyes. Nothing but pure, instant, teamwide healing with no circle impact or energy hunting. What a kind world.

(sidenote: i hc that everyone on etheirys (sans garleans) is capable of using magic at some level, it's just some people are better at it, the same way everyone can learn to swim but michael phelps gets medals because he's a genetic freak of nature)
aurelain: most of his magical ability was learned, centering around super old-school elemental conjury. his main focus is on healing magic, though he dislikes using it because of how easily it can go wrong (bones being set wrong, for instance, or overhealing damage). he also has a few abilities conferred by the scholar job stone he found (chiefly the faerie summons), but he seldom makes use of them. in the very rare cases he has to make use of offensive magic (which he is also loath to do as a pacifist) it's based around earth, wind and water, as most conjury tends to be - though it's also very rough and unpractised, and more than a little brutal as a result.
(in xiv terms he's like if a cnj accidentally equipped a sch rock somehow lol)
ameny: was literally born with freakish surplus aether. as a child it manifested in her being able to use magic without needing a focus, but with the consequence of burning her hands with sheer energy every time she tried. as she grew up she went through rod after rod as each one couldn't handle the strain and just gave up (usually explosively) until she was able to build one that could withstand her volatile aether. in turn her magic is... a garbled mess of spellwork that is singularly ugly in its construction, with little purpose besides 'amy want big boom.' it has gotten more refined over the years as she's learned to actually use it wisely, but it's still a mess of magical spaghetti code.

musing aloud about this good post + tags i saw but i'm absolutely signing myself up into the camp of 'the elementals arent as dangerous as they used to be but gridania clings to their word out of tradition (with the keepers/duskwights as scapegoats)'
something i've always personally headcanoned is that the elementals are actually chill with the duskwights and keepers, and both groups have their own way of communing with them like the hearers do (duskwights have the taltos/druids, that sort of thing), its just. the culture around them has grown very different to both groups and gridania refuses to consider them at all because assimilationism
would have more coherent thoughts but brain fog...
