Was so surprised to be able to draw a person at a cafe who was not utterly engrossed with the black mirror before him.
Might return to this a bit later to continue to refine.

In an effort to cover the name of a tech startup on this little Moleskin notebook, I inadvertently created a little bit of art out of a sticker sheet given to me by another startup. Both now tech zombies/tech zombies to be.
Tech hubris makes me ill, all those investment dollars squandered on founder whims and ego. I care little for the wealthy who get duped to invest, but the everyday workers who are now in a mess due to layoffs have my deep sympathy.
And to the world currently irreparably scarred in the wake of tech bro culture, my deepest sympathies as well.

This year I’m focusing on drawing from life / photos, with the goal being to improve technique. But I had a winged foot in my mind, so this is a combination of two photos, hence why the shadows are skewhiff 🤪. Never-mind, I scratched the itch of my imagination without completely blowing my 2024 plans.

I've written a workbook, received the first, small, print run and now it's time to find new, welcoming homes for them.
I understand that the book may not be your thing but if you know somebody who might be interested I'd be so grateful if you shared it with them.
Here's the blurb on the back cover:

It's also available as an instant download.
Get a free excerpt, look inside the book and find out more at www.croakingravenstudio.com
If you've read any of my posts here you've probably got the (correct) impression that I'm shy and retiring, an in-the-background type of person. If that's you too, you'll have an idea how uncomfortable it is for me to say, "Hey, look what I've done!" but if you could help by sharing this post and link, that would truly be awesome!
Thank you.

4 stations sketch 🤣 If he’d have stayed on the train longer I could have done more refinements. Such a great beard.

Part of the problem with my last portrait was that I didn’t set aside enough focused time for it - not enough time in the initial blocking out, random swipes at the shading, I could feel myself being distracted and disfocused. This feels like a more cohesive attempt. Lesson learned.

Really trying to get my proportions squared away before any shading. And resisting the urge to put my sketch directly on the picture to see how I’m doing with them …

Portrait 9/52. Still very much on my learning journey, but every drawing is one closer to better.
Not sure how happy Kristin Wiig would be with this drawing. But maybe she’d understand, not every joke she tried was funny…??

Portrait 8 / 52 for the year. I doubt my friend would be happy with this, sharing here only to keep myself honest about my progression 😜 I am happy(er) with the proportions and shading, I wish I had some coloured pencils with me because there are some lovely pink tones I’d have liked to add …

The addition of the 4H pencil has really helped my technique, I think. Much easier to put down the lighter tones, and allows more difference between dark and lighter areas of shading.

I snapped this woman’s picture on the airport train, feeling vindicated in violating her privacy as she violated everyone else’s auditory space by having a conversation on speaker at top volume. But drawing her face has proved to be incredibly challenging. I just cannot get the angles / proportions right. I have started over completely at least four times now 🤬🤬🤬 She’s getting the last laugh, clearly 🤣

Sooooo … it’s been a long minute since I put pencil against paper. Life’s been happening; inspiration and headspace have been in short supply.
In 2024 I am still hoping to make improvements to my portraits (hahahahaha who am I kidding? ALL of my technique needs work), so I got back on the horse with this stone portrait.
I used three pencils, 4H, HB and 4B. Have to say that the 4H has been a good new addition, helps with the shading to give lighter tones.
I am behind on my 2024 goal of 52 portraits, I have done 6 only (plus this one, which doesn’t really count), and needed closer to 13 by this time in the year. But it’s still early, I can still catch up.
Happy (nearly the end of) Q1!

I think my shading, while still in need of plenty of work, is better if I avoid trying to use the side of the pencil. Better to increase / decrease the deepness of the shading with more / less hatchmarks.
Face 6 / 52.

More semi in field sketching. I don’t think I improved the shoes by darkening them.

Sunday afternoon sketch. I could maybe have done this live but the poor bloke would have been freaked out by too much observation 🤣 Plus I was enjoying my slice of cake and coffee ☕️ Love this pencil and eraser, also spent time practicing with an erasing shield.

I forced myself to look at the initial blocking carefully and made sure I was happy with the proportions before I started to shape and shade. Pencil down, walk away, come back with a critical eye. Redraw, erase original lines. I think the colour may have flattened everything too much, but a galah just isn’t a galah without its pink.

Hi, not a question...
... but I wanted to say that I really like how you write and you posting drawings you think aren't great. You will inspire lots of people, me included, by your attitude. I also love your avatar, they're one of my favourite creatures!
Thanks ☺️ so much 😘 I have always wanted to be able to draw so am pushing myself to do it, be vulnerable, learn. Practice, practice, more practice
