I sit here, rocking slowly on the porch
My coffee cooling quickly beside me
I hear the occasional whinny from a horse
Nosing around in the yellowing grass
Looking towards the trees I’m greeted with the most beautiful golden hues
The white trunks a stark contrast to the color
The birds have fallen silent from the raucous sounds of spring
Heading south for a warmer winter
The house is also silent
A quiet enjoyed after the weeks of backbreaking work of harvest
It’s more silent now than in years past
With the passing of a friend
As with nature, so are we
Making our way through the seasons of our lives
One day it’s spring, the next, summer
And one day you find it’s Autumn
Slower days more than fast
Quiet more than loud
The changing of the seasons
None of us are ready for
Your golden years were beautiful
Just like the aspens in the yard
Winter is almost here
I’m not ready yet.

Because like most shadows, once you walked over and looked at them clearly, they weren't half as terrifying as you thought they were.

"That's my point. This is about finding someone who makes you feel so good about yourself it's hard believing it. Someone who understands what it feels like to hand over responsibilities and decisions and control and who puts a real value on what you give to them when you do it, and knows how to tune themselves with you so you feel more loved and safe and oriented than you ever knew you could be."

"The law was all very well, but it let so many stupid things get in the way. One day he would be large enough to get away from a cramped, messy room in a cottage he hated. Large enough to leave this town, large enough to sign on with a boat’s crew and go somewhere far away by himself for good. Large enough to be free. To be alone. He often thought of that day. He planned for it. Looked forward to it. Dreamed of it."

Rec: Falls Chance Ranch Series
Title: Falls Chance Ranch Series Author: Rolf and Ranger Format: Series of novels Published/Free: Free Length: Four novels (so far) and quite a lot of short fiction, some of which is fairly lengthy Status: The current novel is WIP, but the rest of the novels and stories are complete and can be read on their own Rating: Mature Warnings: Graphic spanking and milder domestic discipline; eating disorder and occasional self-injury (described in a realistic manner, not romanticized); mention of past child neglect, with resulting trauma Link: http://fallschanceranch.blogspot.com and the latest installments (and e-book versions) at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Fallschanceranch Summary: Are you worried about your executive? Is he burned out? Frazzled? Less than stellar? Is he an excellent employee that you don’t want to lose? If the answer to those questions is an unqualified yes!, then you need to think about sending him to Falls Chance Ranch. In a matter of weeks or months, we’ll turn around your executive and return him to you fit and ready to pick up the reins again. Review: I thought this was a domestic discipline tale. And then I thought this was a series like Maculategiraffe’s The Slave Breakers, centered on a loving, hierarchically ordered, highly unconventional surrogate family.
The series Falls Chance Ranch is both these things, but in addition to that, it is one of the most powerful psychological studies of a man that I’ve encountered in fiction.
Reading the series is like watching layers of an onion be peeled away. Every time that you think you know the protagonist, new layers are revealed. The first scene in which the protagonist undergoes the excruciatingly painful process of remembering his past, with the help of the men he loves, occurred at the very moment my e-reader ran out of power.
I read the rest of the chapter standing in the middle of my apprentice’s night-dark room, while the e-reader powered up. I couldn’t have stopped reading that chapter to save my life.
