Good news ! Facebook/Instagram
Good news As you notice we’re rarely updating our blog. The main reason is lack of time. So from today we’re moving to one of the most popular social networks Instagram and Facebook. Microblogging is becoming huge in popularity and there is nothing better than a picture to tell a story. BTW It's incredibly easy to use. It provides a faster and simpler way to share pictures. See you: https://www.instagram.com/escloimaa/  https://www.facebook.com/esc.loimaa.7

Tervetuloa! (*Welcome)
My First blog/post EVS Project: Learning & Living in Loimaa Moi (*Hi), My name is Jurgis and I’m going to share this blog together with Estelle as you may already know. Here you will see my impressions from EVS project in Finland.
Tumblr media
About Me My name is Jurgis, I’m from Vilnius the capital of Lithuania. I’m 29 years old. The reason why I choose to go EVS that I really never tried to live somewhere else, I want to try myself, and I think it’s good for my personality, I want to know different culture, to gain experience which I could use in my own country.
About The Project Learning & Living in Loimaa Learning & Living in Loimaa is a two year project. Project is coordinated by the Youth Services of Loimaa municipality. Volunteer will work in Sports Services of Loimaa municipality. Sports services arrange different kinds of activities in the vast field of physical education. Volunteer will have a chance to work in groups of different ages and backgrounds – from kids to elderly people. Helping and co-working in the swimming hall for example in water gymnastics, kids swimming schools and in different happenings occasionally. Helping to lead various groups such as kids floor ball or adults in the gym. Sports services arrange also different types of events during the year where help is more than needed.
First steps in Finland land Here I’m, first time in Finland. I landed in a Helsinki airport, where I met Laura from the theatre and Estelle the second volunteer from France. They brought me to my new home at Loimaa. Loimaa is very small city with only 16 thousand people. There I’m going to stay for at least 8 months. Probably the most beautiful thing in Finland is the nature, I’m already in love with it. First week I met people from organization and sport services, they introduced me with all the things what I’m going to do and etc. Then I had opportunity to try Finland sauna. The Finnish sauna is a substantial part of Finnish culture, the sauna is a place to relax with friends and family, and a place for physical and mental relaxation as well. It looks that there is more sauna then people, they have sauna even in the apartment buildings. As you see in photos I was in amazing place called Mellilänjärvi. The sauna are surrounded by forest and frisbeegolf holes. By the way, the lake is FAKE, before it was just a pit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next thing what I did it together with Estelle, we were at the Turku city, and we got there by hitch-hiking. It was just one day trip, but we saw a cathedral, we had riverside walk by the river Aura. Also we met with a Veera, a girl who used to live in Loimaa, now she’s studying economy in Turku. At the afternoon till the evining me and Estelle decided to visit Saaro – the place where you can go for a hiking, sauna bathing, swimming or just enjoy the nature.

For this time this is it, but I will try to update the information as often as possible.

Finland = Lake & SAUNA
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the first thing that I did in Finland is … SAUNA ! Indeed, in this country there are probably more sauna than resident! it’s very common in Finland to go to the sauna almost every day! Sauna really takes part of culture, and for Finns people is … NECESSARY ! They are commonly going after work, or at least every week-end. For them it’s a place to relax between friends or family, and it’s really good for your body and your mental health. It’s said that it’s helping Finns to support the extremely cold winter…
But, the most typical and amazing side is the natural beauty of the place… There are many sauna build in nature, in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by forest… and of course where there is a lake! to plunge into frost water! to cool down your body after get your body at very hight temperature (between 70° to 100°C) : It’s relaxing and regenerating … crazy Finns people !
it’s a little natural paradise ...

Hyvää päivää Finland !!!
Tumblr media
Moi ! I’m Estelle the new EVS (European Volunteer Service) in Loimaa town city in Finland. I’m here since 3 weeks now, firstly I was welcoming enjoyably by nice peoples from EVS association!
To introduce myself, I’m French, I’m 22 years old, I come from Chambéry a town in Alpes area in France close to Switzerland, surrounded by wonderful mountains (a very nice place for skiing and whose love nature). I studied linguistic and language sciences for 3 years and I just got up my under degree. I already left for one whole year in another country with Erasmus, in Dublin (Ireland), whom was an amazing and rewarding experience that I totally LOVE it! I love travelling and discover/sharing new culture, meeting new people and have new experiences. It’s probably for this reason that I choose to do this volunteering In Finland, like the world traveller syndrome take part of me, and grow up increasingly. I would like as well to take a break in my studies to have a real-life experience.  I think that this adventure could help me to find my calling and could bring me what I need.
Thus, I will be here for 10 months to realise my volunteering project, and through this blog I will try to share my experience, adventures, personal impressions, pictures, to make you discover Finland, what I’m doing here, and many information about EVS program, for future EVS, or for anyone who which to follow me!
Thank for reading!

The final moi
Moi! Or should I say moi moi. Still don’t know that until today. Nevertheless, today is the last moi (moi) from me to you. I put some thoughts into what should be my last post on this blog, if I should write a novel and reflect on all my experiences here, if I should write two pages of bad jokes and make a little comedy show out of this, or if I should just say “thank you” and list all the things that I’m grateful for. Didn’t really like any of these options, so I decided to just write and write and write, not deleting any of the things I’ll write and post it the way it becomes – improvisation usually brings the best ideas to me.
Exactly ten months ago I arrived in Finland, a dude who didn’t fully know what to expect, ready to do anything that’s there to do, full of hope and adventure lust for the year, one, big goal in mind – I wanted to develop and change. I didn’t have any concrete idea what I should expect of “develop and change”, I thought that’s something that just comes by itself. And it actually did, in a lot of different shapes, some unexpected and some I was fully aware of (living by yourself, becoming (more) independent, travel around by yourself), and some not so wild ways (like buying a new brand of toothpaste or pasta). If I try to reconstruct my mindset from a year ago, I get a little confused. Some things (many actually) are just not relatable for me anymore, not even in the slightest, reaching from decisions I made only a few months ago to ideas or points of view on the world I used to have. When I look in the mirror today, I feel different. The Alsex from ten months ago looked into the mirror and saw a guy, that was just always there. The Alex, that is writing this text right now, sees himself.
There was so much stuff happening in the past 10 months, that listing all of them would be impossible. Reaching from a ton of new work experiences, enhancing my English in daily use, lections over lections I learned concerning theatre, acting and directing, to very simple, yet kind of challenging things – like becoming independent or learning to deal with yourself. Finland taught me some things I wouldn’t have learned at home, and I’m really grateful for that.
Aaaand of course – I met so many amazing people here. Starting at the staff of the Youth Office and the theatre and ending at the other Evs’s I met during the On Arrival Training and the Mid Term Meeting. Children, youngsters, teachers, unemployed people – people, who had an exact idea of what they want to be and people, who where just living their life, waiting for whats to come.
I saw the finnish nature in all its different forms and shapes, I experienced a winter, that was depressing and dark as fuck and a summer, which wasn’t ready to hide itself. I saw many finnish traditions, I snacked the finnish snacks, I sweated in finnish saunas and froze in finnish lakes.
If I think about it now, it really didn’t feel like 10 months, more like, maybe two, max three. Time just just flew by as I was EVSing around, and even if I had days, where I wished I could just be in my cosy little hometown, speaking German and being surrounded by friends, I don’t regret a single second I spent in this country. I don’t really remember if I ever mentioned it in a previous post, but Finland was always a country I wanted to visit, since I was a kid. I couldn’t really say why, but this northern mentality just appealed to me in a weird, yet interesting way. Some people here were asking me, if I regret that I didn’t choose London over Loimaa – I don’t. Not in the slightest. Even though I didn’t make so many friends here in Loimaa (probably would have met more people in ten hours in London than in 10 months in Loimaa), I experienced so many other things that made up for that.
Another thing I heared the last week, like, a thousand times, is, how it feels to leave Finland now. And I never actually had an answer, expect – weird. I look forward to see everyone in Austria again, but I’m not going to lie – Loimaa became a seconde home to me, a place where I feel comfortable and welcome. I really didn’t expect that to happen, but it’s actually harder to leave Loimaa now, then it was to leave Austria 10 months ago.
I would like to thank, well, pretty much everyone I met here, but especially: Anu, Maukka, Sari, Pirkko, Henna, Kirsi, Liisa, Mekku, Anna, Ellis and of course the ranskalainen themselves – Romain and Dom.
That’s pretty much it – for now. In Austria, we have this saying that we don’t say goodbye until we actually say goodbye. So I’ll just stick with the ol’ reliable and say – see you!

Final Countdown
*turn on “It’s the final countdown” from Europe while reading this entry*
Moikka and a very happy tervetuloa to one of the last blog entries of this years EVS’s!
We arrived in the last week of our service. A lot of stuff is going down (not at all actually, last week is pretty chilled). Romain is laving in four days, I have seven left. For everything that’s left to do. Which isn’t that much actually, so let me give you a little insight in the next weeks activities.
On Monday, we’ll have our goodbye party at Melliläjärvi (a lake). Going to be full of tears and all that stuff, we haven’t really planned anything special for that yet (probably won’t do, we have less than 24 hours left for that). It’s just going to be chilled five hours with sauna, talking and good-bying I guess. I’m absolutley terrible at saying goodbye to be honest, but wqell, some things can’t be changed.
Tuesday we’ll visit Turku to see “the wizard of oz” in a summer theatre, really looking forward to that as well.
Wednesday is the big clean up and packing day (basically for both of us, mostly for Romain though), nothing special to say about that.
Thursday is Romains departure day. It’s kind of weird thinking that all the Evs’s leave Finland now, one after another. Especially when i think back to stuff like the On arrival training, that happened NINE MONTHS AGO. Doesn’t feel like it at all.
Friday is pretty much a free day. I’ll say goodbye to Loimaa I guess, no idea how yet but I’ll come up with something,
Saturday is the day I’ll leave Loimaa. Need to stay in Helsinki for one night since my flight is at 8 in the morning and I can’t really leave Loimaa early enough without missing my flight. No idea what to do on that day, maybe I’ll go to Suoemlinna again or I’ll just walk around.
Sunday is the day of of actually saying goodbye. Forever. No not forever, maybe for a year or two. Prepare for a very emotional last blog entry (maybe, no clue if I find words for that or if I’ll be just sleepy as hell (not the biggest morning person))
As you can see, there’s a lot of “No idea”, “maybe” and “I don’t know” included here. Mostly because I really don’t know stuff right now. It feels so long ago that I arrived here, yet my stay feels so short. I feel like I just arrived, yet so familiar with everything. It’s just weird how time passes.

ជំរាបសួរ  (Hello in a language I can’t even translate into english, sorry)
This week we had different work to do - the first summer camp started (and ended)! Taking place in a small private area called Kalikka, the summer camp offered children the possibility to camp, sauna, swim and play for three days (or two and a half if you’re into precision). Romain and I’ve been there to assist with, well, everything I guess. We did whatever was there to do, reaching from doing games with the children to watching them at the beach so that they don’t drown. All in all it was a great time, the children had a blast (and even tried to speak english to us, really didn’t expect that).
To be honest, I completly forgot to take pictures of the activities, so you’ll have to settle with this - sunset at the beach of the Pyhäjärvi (try saying that 15 times in a row) at 11 in the evening.
Otherwise, there wasn’t anything special happening. Our departure from Finland gets closer every day (incredible, I know). It’s a really weird feeling, thinking about how many days we’ve already been here. And now I look at the counter and it tells me: Departure in 16 days. How weird is that.

Henlo!
Today only a very smal entry to the blog, mostly because of time and stuff to do.
The last week(s) I worked on a little project we started at, well, pretty much the beginning of our Evs, that didn’t get any love for quite some time - a map of Loimaa that shows the “sights” and things to do here. The picture shows the front of the map (you have to imagine it being folded two times) in its 95% finished state. Soon this baby will be available at some places in Loimaa for you to grab, so if you ever come to Loimaa and want to do a little bit of sightseeing, this guy will be your best friend. I guess it’ll be finished latest at sunday, maybe I’ll post a picture of the whole thing then.

Departure in 24 days
Tumblr media
Hello there , sorry for copyrighting Alex's last title....But it is actually happening ! Anyway its been a while since I haven't posted anything there , I will talk a bit about work and also about the feeling of having less than a month left before the end of Evs.
I will not lie , I am looking forward to go back to France as I miss Family , my comfort there and maybe also the food , butttt I don't want to go back home yet as I want to enjoy the last 24 days fully , I will travel soon to visit a few other evs and party one last time in Finland with them.
The last few weeks have been really enjoyable both for the nature being really green but also because of the work , we had the last week of the youth houses until the end of summer holidays and everyday we did something special , monday at Mellilä I did a cheese cake , wednesday at Alastaro we cooked a lot of things for fajitas and then thursday we did some lemon pies , it is kinda sad to know that I won't work again on youth houses after but anyway we have summer camps next week. It was a nice week as I really love to experience new recipes ...especially when the result is okay and it was.

Departure in: 30 days.
Sawubona! (thats “hi” in a language called “Zulu”, no idea what it is, just chose a random language in Google translator, I slowly run out of ways to start there entries off so cut me some slack)
Today, we have one of this more serious posts, that I absolutely hate to write. But I guess it’s more useful for, well, everyone, if I write some serious stuff from time to time.
The title pretty much says it all. 30 days left in Finland. 30 days as a european volunteer. 30 days until we return back to a, more or less, normal life. Today someone asked us how we feel about going back home. At first, I thought the answer is obvious to me, just to realize, that it’s far away from that.
One the one hand, I really like it here. I like my work, the people around me and just Finland in general. It’s pretty much how I imagined it as a 12 year old child that wanted to go there. There are so many things here that I prefer in comparison to Austria. There really is no reason for me to feel like I really want to leave this place. It’s crazy to think, that this EVS is something, that I worked for 2 years. Going to Finland was my motivation to finish High School (I was a really lazy student, just for the protocol) and I didn’t really think about anything that happens after all of that. I just knew that this time would come some day, but I never worried about it. I remember coming home and telling my dad “I got this offer to go abroad. Do you think Mom will kill me?” We both laughed.
Since 60 days, I look at that number. It grows smaller every day. Back at the time when I had around 90 days of time left, I didn’t really realize, that there’s an ending in plain sight. After a little over 200 days here, I feel almost like at home. Times flying though, and suddenly I realized - there are only 30 days left. And I really don’t know how to feel, no matter how much I try to reflect everything I experienced here.
I’m sorry if these words don’t make sense for someone reading it without sitting in my head. I decided not to plan any of this, just to roll with whatever comes and not to delete anything I write now. There isn’t any nice “that’s a lecture you can learn here” ending to that blog I guess, it’s just some gibberish from me. And now I don’t even know how to end that entry. Wwwwwwell. Just read through it and it sounds like I’m really depressed but I’m not at all. I feel a mixture of really happy and really sad, both because I leave and return from somewhere, never really had that before.
Since that’s going to be one of the last entries from me here (still plenty to come but you know, how many can come in 30 days), let’s introduce something for the last couple posts - a positive quote that describes something I learned here.
We start with something that became my life motto three months ago:
People always regret the past, fear the future and forget the present.

Hallihallo (some german greeting)!
Last friday we had a special event in the theatre - the hand - out of the certificates to the theatre students of Loimaan teatteri.
To explain that a little more - in Finland there is a governmental arts education system for children and young people, offering the basic studies in 9 art forms. Loimaan teatteri offers education in Theatre Art, which means that youngsters can do kind of a study course to get a certified education in acting. That’s what the 18 people you can see above did, kind of a big deal for everyone. We had quiet a nice evening, filled with moderations, singing, laughing and all the other little details that contribute to a nice ceremony. In the end, Sari and Mekku prepared kind of a quiz, where everyone, while having coffee and cake” had to assign certain character traits or habbits to one of the 18 people. Everyone had a good laugh and it was just overall a nice atmosphere for everyone there. I think the theatre students really learned something during their studies there - which is quite impressive in my opinion.

New EVS boi landed!
 Part 2/2 party people!
So Klassikko x5 was a big news but there was one that’s even bigger. On tuesday Loimaas newest Evs arrived in Finland. And Loimaa. But you know, Loimaa is in Finland, so that information was useless. Whatever.
Our newest volunteer is called Dominique, he’s 25 years old and, just like Romain, from France. In fact, they’re both send by the same organisation. And they both live rather close to each other, but I don’t want to spoil that much about him in case he also gets access to the blog so he still has some stuff to tell you by himself. The most important point is that he’s working for the cultural service here in Loimaa and that he is their first EVS since ever.
He chose quite a good point in time to come as well - the weather is getting more awesome with every day. And with more awesome I mean even ducking hotter with each day. Which is kind of nice in first place, until it hits the 25 degree mark and well - thats supposed to be the finnish summer already. And it gets even funnier when you consider the fact that I was walking over a completly frozen lake in Tampere five weeks ago. Time flies, temperature as well. Spring isn’t really working here i guess.

Sorpresa!
Today there’s a double post incoming, not because I’m overly motivated but because there was a lot of stuff happening in the last week and I was too lazy to post it in time (sorry about that). SO!
Klassikko x5 had it’s premiere! Hurray! In case I’ve never told you about the plot of Klassikko x5 (I’m certain I put either one s or one k too much in there): there isn’t one plot. There are five. Basically we had five plays, each written in a different point of time: Antigone, Shakespear, Villisorsa, Anna Liisa and Waiting for Godot. We tried to make them as short as possible and to mix them up a little bit. The basic idea behind that was to show, that, even though the plays are all very different from each other, they’re all the same thing - theatre.
The whole ensemble put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into the project, rehearsing over half a year, including almost two weeks of daily rehearsals before it was ready to see the daylight. Everyone was eager to present what we were doing for the last (almost) six months. And it worked out great. The audience liked it, we got a lot of positive feedback and most importantly - everyone had a blast perfoming and in the end they all were satisfied with the final result.
At this point I would like to say thank you once again to Sari and Mekku, entrusting me with the responsibility to direct a group in a country which language I’m not even speaking. I wasn’t having any physical qualification for directing the Romeo & Julia part of the play, the only thing I could offer was experience and motivation. Still they thought that it would be a good idea to put me in the place of an director (and even more to let me design the light for the whole play), something I’m incredibly grateful for. It’s not self - evident to get such a huge possibility as a participant in European Voluntary Service. At the same time I want to thank my group, Sanna, Netta, Eerika, Emilia, Elsa, Jenni and Alinda for being brave enough to work through a whole play in english and with a guy they have never seen nor spoken to before.
So that’s it for the first part - seconde one coming!

Moikka Heippa hei!
Long time no see, it’s your favourite austrian Evs of May ‘18. Sorry for not posting anything for quite some time but I was busy (and lazy as well but hey) with a lot of stuff.
April was a pretty fast and pretty weird month. I had two of my closest friends visiting me here in Finland, one for two weeks and one for one week. So April wasn’t really that much of a working month, more of a ‘let’s do some shit while you’re here’ month. On the one side it was very nice to see familiar faces, on the other hand it proved something to me which I didn’t want to accept up to now - I’m homesick as hell. Homesickness was something I was never willing to accept during my time here, mostly because home is still there when I return and it’s going to be there for a little longer time as well. But here it’s only ten months that never come back to me. I didn’t want to live with my head in the future or the past and forget the present, but I guess homesickness is something unavoidable and the easiest way to cope with it is to let it happen and accept it.
Workwise there was some stuff happening. We had an interview about ourselfes and our evs experience, covering the classic questions: what we do, and why we chose Finland. You really get stigmatised from finnish people for coming to their country (jk, love you fins).
The biggest part was the start of the serious rehearsing phase of Klasikko x5, daily rehearsels, building the stage and the light, putting the scenes together, the full package. At the beginning all the leaders were a little sceptical, but the group is doing a great job right now, leaping with huge steps towards the premiere, which is taking place this sunday.
Aside of all of that there wasn’t that much happening. The sun is rising so early already, sky starts to clear up at around 4-ish. And it’s bright until like 10/ half past 10. Not used to that at all. Apparently the longest days in Loimaa are more or less 19-20 hours long, so that’s going to be fun as well.

End of holidays
Tumblr media
Hello everyone ,
I will not talk about work today , my little holidays ended the last week and I will just talk a bit about it. Family came two weeks ago , they visited a bit of Loimaaand also the places where we are working , the youth house and the theatre. Then we took a plane to Ivalo in the north of Finland to visit a bit Lappland even if it is spring , the snow was still there and the lake of Inari was frozen , the views were great and walking on the lake during a few hours was really relaxing.
We also went to the Sami museum of Inari , and it was really interesting to know more of the Sami culture and their history , also to learn about the past of Finland. We all tried Reeindeer meat and we really enjoyed it , the taste is a bit like duck and we don't really know why but it was a nice surprise , they also tried the mämmi and the leipajuusto and they liked both , they liked a lot of the Finnish food that they tried except the dark bread but well in France we don't eat dark bread at all ^_^
The holidays were great and it was a good moment for me to talk French and to just enjoy to see family after 7 months without seeing them.
That's it for now , have a nice day !

End of youth parlement and “Soufflés” at Alastaro.
Tumblr media
This week we had the last day of the youth parlement , all three big schools of Loimaa ( Puistokatu , Hirvikoski and Alastaro) participated to the event and every youngsters from three grades were able to vote for the best idea that they wanted for their city , some ideas where for example to have a coffee machine or a skate park in their town. The final idea was to create a space to do a firepace and a small house that could be used mostly during spring and summer for people to do for example BBQ’s or simply to chill in the middle of the nature.
I wanted to try something new at Alastaro ( Like every two weeks) and this time I did some ‘soufflés’ this is also a very easy thing to do , just some dough with cheese and ham and to finish it you add the yellow of an egg on top of it to give it a better color.
I will probably not post something in the next weeks as I will be on holidays.
