definitely not the first person to say this but i am obsessed with taylor offering up an extremely long album that takes a minute to digest in the era of short content and instant gratification

very interesting to me how usually taylor is very loud and descriptive about the physical attributes she likes about the ppl she dates (eyes, hair, height, etc) but in the m*tty songs there's almost no physical attraction, it's all about the way he made her feel through his love bombing. even in guilty as sin, the horniness is mostly born out of desperation and the rush of doing something bad (infidelity)
YEAH!!!! the absence of this really emphasizes that it’s what she was dreaming of - like even in guilty as sin? it’s all a romanticization of the things she’s imagining him doing TO HER.

The analogy of Matty as a “forget him” pill in the Fortnight video and “I took the miracle move on drug, the effects were temporary” is the heart of it I feel. If you had to have an extremely painful surgery and could choose to go medicated or not, what would you pick? She had to end things with Joe but she couldn’t bring herself to do it for years because she knew the pain of actually losing him would be too much to bear, and along comes this person peddling that he can take away all the pain. He sells her a story about how he is the great love of her life, that he’s never forgotten her all this time, that it was supposed to be them all along. He can give her everything she can’t bear to let go of. And who wouldn’t want to believe that, when the alternative is … the love that you thought was forever just ends and there’s nothing and no one? So she does it, she takes the pill, she has the surgery, only to find he was selling not just snake oil but poison that leaves her far worse off than she was in the beginning. She feels all the pain of the surgery and the side effects of the drug in one fell swoop.

Just clocked that she says loss of my life because she thought ending things with Joe would kill her. People are hung up on the fact that she left Joe, so any song that implies she got left can't be about him. But she implies that she feels like he abandoned her in a way just not physically. He was a shell of a man in the end. Honestly, this is sort of like if folklore was written about their break up but the fictional character driving the story is a real person- Matty.
The whole album is about how she knew Joe would never physically leave and she was bored, stagnant and miserable in the end. She started to daydream and fantasize about this other person and convinced herself she needed to know "what if". The two stories start the same with a damsel in distress that the man thinks he's saving. The "what if" promised her all the same things and it's like dejavu. She went insane because surely this can't happen twice. The two stories are the same. She met a weak, sad, small, British man who could never give her anything.
Joe's only saving grace here is that he was the more boring of the two and he slowly hollowed out.
And that is the summary of TTPD! Thanks for coming!

i feel like the prologue should be compulsory reading for anyone before theyre allowed to listen to the album because allll these questions about 'who' and 'how' and 'why' are answered in it so clearly. this isn't a love album, nor is it a breakup album. it's just... a life album. a chapter
she was manic. the microwave and the oven almost killed her. the fame made it worse. we’re so lucky she felt compelled to share this instead of burying all of it, hidden forever.

Do you think she was trying to protect Joe? She mentions quiet resentment and neglect and the fact that he wasted her youth and didn’t marry her. But overall she doesn’t get into the details of why and how they broke up. Maybe she was too caught up in the Matty of it all to feel inspired enough for writing Joe breakup songs
ALL OF THE MATTY SONGS ARE ALSO JOE SONGS

i love this album because for the first time in maybe her entire career she's not apologising for a single thing. the album is angry and raw and she's like "here's this chapter of my life, the sad, the bad, the terrible and it's all raw and fucking angry for you all to see and i don't need absolution for a single thing" like she's not asking forgiveness for a single thing from anyone and that's what makes the album so fucking heartbreaking
