Please do not surprise anyone with a pet!
Animals should not be given as gifts, and especially not as surprises. They are not toys you can return when you don’t like them - they are living creatures that depend entirely on you for their happiness and wellbeing.
Surprising someone with a pet might sound nice, but there are a lot of things to consider when getting an animal. Pets can be expensive, not all apartments or housing complexes allow all animals, and people may not be able to keep up with certain behaviors, energy levels or the daily maintenance required.
Puppies and kittens are adorable, but they are the most expensive, a LOT of work and they will get bigger.
Unfortunately for a lot of people, pets given or recieved as gifts become too much work and lose their novelty after the holidays. Those animals often end up in shelters and need new homes.
If you or your loved one wants an animal, please do your research. Look into what’s required for different animals, and make sure to investigate the breed as well. Call a local vet clinic to get prices and pointers.
And please, please adopt. Go and meet some animals and find one that’s a good fit - for you, and for them.
