Repost of Instagram post by alessandra_sanguinetti:
āIn 2004 I worked as an intern in Newsweek and had to go through the wires coming in from the Middle East.
The Iraq war was raging. Israel was committing its routine violations and killings.
The images were devastating and unequivocally condemning of both the USA and Israel, but I remember the editors would reject all my picks and demand images of burnt cars or vague images of destruction.
So I brought a hard drive and collected everything they didn't publish.
It was my first live glimpse of the lack of ethics or integrity in most US media.
Not the journalists on the ground, but of the senior editors making the calls - in their self important glass cubicles.
And no, to the cynics out there..it's not all too complicated to discuss on social media.
Social media is the only reason we know what's happening in Palestine.
And the only reason mainstream news has to keep up and sprinkle some actual news now and then.
Meanwhile we are seeing much less footage coming out of Gaza - Israel has been killing off all the journalists.
This is terrifying.ā

Do not punish the behaviour you want to see
I mean, it seems pretty obvious when you put it like that, right?
But how many families, when an introvert sibling or child makes an effort to socialize,Ā snarkily say,Ā āSo, youāve decided to join usā?
Or when someone does something theyāve had trouble doing, say,Ā āWhy canāt you do that all the time?ā (Happened to me, too often.)
Or any sentence containing the wordĀ āfinallyā.Ā
If someone makes a step, a small step, in a direction you want to encourage, encourage it. Donāt complain about how itās not enough. Donāt bring up previous stuff. Encourage it.
Because I swear to fucking god there is nothing more soul-killing, more motivation-crushing, than struggling to succeed and finding out that success and failure are both punished.

if we want to stop the patriarchal concept of surnames being passed down the male line, we have a few options options that iād be 100% fine with:
children get whichever surname is cooler, to eliminate uncool surnames over the generations
children get whichever surname is rarer, to achieve a utopian future in a few centuries where all surnames are more or less equally common
childrenās surnames are randomly generated: say, heads for parent #1ās surname, tails for parent #2ās surname
parents pick the first names first, and then a court decides which surname fits it better. so if a couple named mr. madison and mr. liu want to name their daughter alison, sheāll get the surname liu, because alison madison sounds ridiculous
everyone stops having children right now

āIsrael is committing genocide.ā Yes. They are. But so is the US. The US is 100% complicit in this, and Israel would not have been able to do as much without the help of the US. Iām disgusted to be living in a country that is complicit in the literal MURDER of civilians. Men, women, children, elderly, families. All dead because of Israel AND the US. This needs to STOP.

Samar Elkhadour has been trying to get her daughter, Jana, out of Gaza, for the past several years. Jana was born with a severe degree of cerebral palsy and was living with Samarās in-laws in Gaza. Samar was living in Canada and was trying to get her daughter to her as she dealt with Janaās immigration process. Jana died on Jan. 8 ā four days after her 13th birthday ā in Gaza due to malnutrition and lack of medicine. 2 weeks later, Samar got the green light from the Canadian government to bring her.
