i keep seeing that post about how frustrating the buff guy -> petite girl type genderbending is, and i wanted to add my two cents regarding the addition of ‘just swap pronouns and don’t change the design’ approach because i think these are two sides of the same coin, as they both fail to really delve into what i think is the most interesting aspect of this design exercise.

the reason i find genderbending to be such a fun and interesting challenge is because, if you actually want to be good at it and put thought into it, you have to really consider the character’s canon gender expression and think about what it means to them and how it reflects in their outward appearance and presentation.

is this male character buff because he likes to work out / be strong, or does he aspire to achieve conventional heteronormative male beauty?

is this female character a tomboy because she likes to express herself in a more masculine way, or is she doing it to fight gender norms?

the answers to those questions should produce very different designs!

this website loves to say that gender is a spectrum, but sometimes i genuinely wonder if people actually understand what that means. 

gender expression, much like gender, is also a spectrum, which is why keeping the character exactly the same won’t always work, in the same way that just making the character conventionally attractive won’t always work. but sometimes, a buff dude would actually just be a hot girl. lady bane, however, would 100% look exactly the same.

I've seen a post insisting that ansem is a pure xehanort thing because terras heart is sealed fully in the guardian (which i agree with) and it made me think about how in the boat form of his fight ansem is pretty distinctly separate even while being integrated into it (like his upper body is basically unaffected by the transformation)

And iirc the equivalent for xemnas doesnt have that kind of "here's the human shaped part of the boat" (i looked it up again and i know its more of a dragon but i KNOW I've heard people refer to it also as a boat fight)

Doing some minor character writing exercises in my head with Kairi and ended up working my way into a Kairi who does increasingly reckless things in the hopes that she will get hurt.

Let me explain what I mean by that. I think Kairi would view herself as having stumbled into a "be careful what you wish for" situation. Her initial wish for things, especially for Sora, to never change because of the initial complications of her childhood slowly becoming a curse. Because it isn't Sora who never changes - it's her.

Stability turns to stagnation, comfort to boredom, safety to a stifling sterility. She can't fight because it's too dangerous. They won't train her seriously because it's too dangerous. She can't be hurt. Oh, Namine can be hurt. Xion too. People connected to her heart can absorb every ounce of pain in her place, just as long as she remains pristine.

It's enough to drive anyone mad. In her private, unsent letters, I can visualize her turning from a hopeful beacon content to light the way back to the lonely teammate left behind. To not even a teammate - to a figure, an idea, a statue upon a pedestal.

I can see her snapping during her training as Lea refuses to go too hard: "Why can't you just hurt me?!"

And it sounds horrible. She sounds ill. There's concern that she hates herself but it's the exact opposite. She loves herself enough to want to be treated like a human. To experience scraped knees, bruises, heartbreak. Parts of herself she put aside to put others at ease. It is not a compliment to be a doll. It is not love to be locked in a tower. Pain is human, pain is having a heart - so what does it mean that everyone denies her even the chance to glimpse her own pain?

Like at 1st i assumed the right one was lucia because it makes sense she would be more agressive than scared and also because they gave her bigger boobs.
