shoutout to the little moments in which ellie looks out for/takes care of joel back, even if she has to force him to accept it or be a little sneaky about it

-is ready to take second watch when he falls asleep. such a perfect mirror of him standing guard in the woods in ep4, because even though she’s not worried about the whole river of death thing, he is, so she’ll stay up to make sure they’re safe

-directs him through their escape from the university while he’s in shock and losing blood

-grabs his flashlight from the truck during the shootout

-stops reading the letter when tess’s name comes up and worriedly tries to bring her up again later

-already knows he’s gonna be less than pleased about only being able to make it up 33 floors before he even says anything and insists that it’s good enough

-gets him an extra cushion when she’s setting up their beds because he’s taller

-declares that he will be taking a shower at bill and frank’s, reminiscent of sarah forcing him to drink orange juice, joel is a man doomed to being pestered into taking care of himself by teen girls

-proudly presents him with the hank williams tape because he liked the linda ronstadt one

something I’ve been thinking about is that all joel needed was a car battery. he took ellie on as “cargo” for a car battery, which is something he could have gotten his hands on a hundred different ways (especially once he left the QZ). but something fundamentally shifted in joel the moment he decided to put his life on the line for “cargo” & step between her and a machine gun. and I think on some deep level, he’d been looking for a reason to keep going — and the moment he laid eyes on a young girl in the need of protection he found it.

it would be amazing if they made a Last of Us special 2 episodes like they did with euphoria.

today im asking myself what was joel's reaction when he saw ellie's tattoo for the first time.

do not read if you haven't played tlou pt 2, or have only watched the show

(i put it in tags but not enough people saw it)

i think something worth mentioning is that in ep. 8 we see ellie become completely and utterly murderous, just as we do in the game except much more violent and visceral. We dont get that cushion of digital violence like in the game. It's real people going through these things, which makes the thought of tlou2 that much worse.

I think in tlou2s adaptation we are going to see just how ruined Ellie is by Joel's death. We're going to see her raw and merciless capacity for inflicting violence as well as her undying need to avenge the only father she's ever known, and without this layer of animation. It will be like ep. 8 for however many seasons/episodes it take to make it. And with Bella Ramsey's ability to portray trauma and fear? Needless to day, we should all be very very scared for tlou2

ellie staggering out of the warehouse on her own. bloodied, broken, and bruised. yet another tally to the ever lengthening list of utter bullshit she has to put up with just for a measly chance to cure people who will neither be grateful for her sacrifice nor deserving of it. her love for the people she lost drives her, but joel knows that no one deserves her kindness, not when he’s seen the hell she’s going through. not when he can’t protect her from even this.

joel had every right to take her out of that hospital. the choice was selfish and cruel, but ellie…funny, capable, and kind ellie. the closest person he has to a daughter, a single tether to his humanity, does not deserve to be a sacrifice to an already broken world hellbent on destroying themselves on their own.
