A/N: I AM SO SORRY THIS TOOK SO LONG SOBBING!!! I kept forgetting to write it!! Hopefully now that SATs are over ill have more time to write!! I hope you like this!! Btw not spell checked!!!
The atmosphere around the base had been tense, to say the least.
The looming pressure of an upcoming mission weighed heavily on everyone. As a lieutenant, you bore the brunt of the stress, constantly handling conflicts and fixing issues that arose during the intense preparation process, not to mention the fact that your own workload was overwhelming, causing you to sacrifice sleep and free time.
Finally, after the mission, things were running smoothly and settled again. Thankfully, Well surprisingly I should say, there were no squad casualties at all, and only a few of them had been injured. Your subordinates wanted to celebrate the fact that it was over and that they could relax up until the next mission. Of course, you let them have their fun, go to the pub or do whatever it is that they do in their free time. Though unlike everyone else you still had a pile of work left to do so instead of joining them you stayed in your office and filled out forms and papers and things of the sort.
After about 32 hours of nonstop work, you were so close to being finished and able to relax too, but people kept interrupting and bothering you, throwing off your focus. At first, you didn’t mind it, not seeing answering a rookie’s question or entertaining one of your private’s silly ideas as an inconvenience. But now it was different, you were already agitated from the lack of sleep and food, under pressure to finish this last bit of work up, just wanting to be done. You were so close, with less than three pages left to go when you heard another knock on the door, the door swung open before you could even say come in.
It was a random private who ran into your office, telling you about something that you didn’t catch because of how fast he was speaking. “Enough!” You yelled slamming your pen onto the desk in front of you. “Can’t you see I’m doing something important?? What could you possibly need right now?? Whatever it is better to be fucking important!” You yelled glaring right at the rookie who stuttered a small apology before scattering away. You let out a sigh and got the urge to take it back and apologize but it was too late and you had work to do. Little did you know Keegan was standing outside of the door during that whole thing and had heard you snap at the poor rookie.
Because the door was still open, the man was able to walk into your office silently and sit in the chair in front of you. When you looked up your eyes softened, immediately recognizing the man sitting in front of you. “What is it, Russ?” You ask with a certain sharpness in your tone. “Nothing, I just came to check on’ya.” He said while trying to maintain eye contact with you but you were more focused on your work. “Looks to me like you need a break, yeah?” he asked but you shook your head a scoffed, “I only have a few more papers left, it's only gonna take about an hour I don’t need a break.” You huffed. “Right, if there is only an hour's worth of work left then you can get back to it later. Come with me, we’ll go relax in the common room.” You shook your head no and stayed silent, you just wanted to get this work done and be over with it. Keegan groaned and said a curt “Fine, whatever.” Before leaving the room, you felt bad for acting like this but it's not like it was without reason.
About ten minutes later Keegan came back with a tray of things to your surprise, once he sat it down at your desk you finally could get a good look at it. He had brought around six sandwiches, water, and some fruit. You looked up at him with a confused gaze, “What’s all this for?” You asked before letting your pen leave your achy hand. “Figured we eat lunch together, don't think you’ve eaten in a while so I brought something you might like,” he said while passing you three sandwiches off of the tray. You couldn't help but smile and thank him for his kindness and tell him that he of course did not need to do that, and as you expect he brushed your words off and asked you what kind of friend he would be if he didn’t.
You guys sat there and ate together for a long while, you were able to decompress with him as you both spoke about things that were on your minds. Once you both were done he sat with you while you did your last bit of work too, wanting to keep you company. And when you finished he walked you back to your quarters where you both fully relaxed and hung out together until you fell asleep. Keegan didn’t bother to go back to his room when he did, he opted to fall asleep in the comfortable chair that you had in the corner of your room. Though, in his mind, he silently wished to be able to fall asleep right by your side. But he kept that to himself.
