two ways to dehumanize someone are dismissing them, and idolizing them.

bakugo really only ever knew those two things growing up. he doesn’t know how to process genuine support, care, or the logic behind them just like he doesn’t know rightful consequence. his mom dismissed him and the praise he got, his dad let it go on and dismissed the severity of um hitting and degrading your child lol. and on the flip side? the praise he got put him on an unnatural pedestal in OTHER social spheres and really fucked with his perception. it was severely disproportionate and unhealthy. the discrepancy between those very polar attitudes was way too much for him to balance out on his own when it has been like that since he was a toddler. 

which side of it do you trust? well of fucking course you’re inclined to trust the side that feels good on a superficial level. everyone would rather be praised than degraded. of fucking course he’d latch onto that perspective. and of fucking course he still harbors the negative attidude deep underneath that. it fuels him to keep clinging to the idea of being the winner, being the best; that’s honestly the core of the PD he’s coded to have and it’s actually. kinda painful to watch how quick he descends into full scale breakdowns over trying to maintain the one ideal he’s thus far defined himself by. to watch him break himself, too, not for the same reasons as izuku does but because he literally cannot disengage from this ideal.

he just never learned how to be regarded as a person. to reasonably combat and be aware of his flaws. to be humble about his abilities. those are lessons everybody has to learn and it’s best learned early. his emotional and mental growth was horribly stunted by the fact that people put him in either one weird box or the other, and left him there. it contributed to the development of his serious complexes and imo a pretty bad cluster B. he’s got pretty bad gifted kid syndrome, too. when you’re taught that you don’t even need to try to get by early on, you don’t develop the skills you need to be okay later in life. study skills, interpersonal skills. when you hit a roadblock in your own development you have no foundation for figuring out how to get out of it. disproportionate praise like he got is usually more harmful than anything else. it hinders you later in life.

he’s still responsible for the choices he makes and the awful things he does to other people but he’s also a kid who never got the help he needed from the very beginning, when he indisputably deserved it. his parents failed at their job. kids in general aren’t inherently irredeemable - this is around the age where they start making the conscious decision to clean up their act. where they start realizing maybe something went wrong somewhere along the line. he needs to unlearn and relearn literally his entire life and realistically this is around when it would happen.

he didn’t get the chance to become well-rounded from the start; he was chipped off and left with sharp edges and he grew up thinking he could use that to his advantage in the long run but he just can’t. he just can’t do that, it’s not realistic or sustainable.

his nature is a disaster, but nurture sure did a number on him
