I'll Bring You Flowers“ - a solo exhibition by Peter Phobia

Opening Reception: Friday, 15th of September, 17.00 – 22.00h Sound of Snow, Dieffenbachstraße 37, 2nd rear house, 4th floor In presence of the artists
Runtime: 16th of September – 1st of October
Opening Hours: Wednesdays – Fridays: 16.00 – 20.00 h Saturdays: 14.00 – 20.00 h Sunday, 1th of October: 14.00 – 20.00 h And by appointment: [email protected]
About the Exhibition With the new body of work presented in 'I'll Bring You Flowers' Peter Phobia deals with a society that is perpetually connected to social media and therefore taking this as a main platform for political information and education. In a world where it seems to be the most desirable thing to be well-presented and acclaimed in the online cosmos it get's harder and harder to filter scam and adequate information – politic-wise, career-wise and social-wise, we get blinded by empty promises on a daily basis. It therefore does not surprise that looking at Peter Phobia's collage work, which readopts a lot from the aesthetics of the late 70s and 80s, immediately gets the spectator in a feeling of sweet melancholy. It is the spirit of a time which marks the last 'analogue time period' before the introduction of the internet completely turned around our lives. Yet, this warm sense of well-being soon gets cracked once one pays more attention to the scribbled notes next to the pictures. They act like a reminder to stop us from blindly falling for superficial offers that trigger us with fake attractiveness like a bouquet of flowers, given as an apology for mistreatment.
About the Artist Peter Phobia is an artist currently living in Vienna, Austria. Predominantly focussing on drawing, his works range from small pieces to larger than life formats. Even though his use of color is mostly restrained and limited it still has a strong impact on his work. The use of written elements in form of quotes and excerpts of texts play an important role in his art and often complement the visual parts in his pieces. He is deeply influenced by pop culture, everyday life observations and often comments on the human being within society. His work is rather a statement but an open invitation to reflect on current topics in society. Phobia's artwork has been shown in numerous places around the globe, such as New York, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Barcelona, Madrid, Switzerland, Lithuania, Serbia, Liechtenstein and Mexico.

MOMEN THE SKATER
A young, ambitious skater from Sudan learns to cope with the initial struggles that skateboarding inevitably entails.
Produced by Editude Pictures Directed by Andreas Lamoth Cinematography by Frederic Leitzke & Andreas Lamoth Original Score by Kyson Soundmix & Design by Benjamin Schäfer (Loft Berlin) Edit & Grade by Andreas Lamoth Fixer Rhea Schmitt Graphic Design by Christoph Bruns (on&on) Special Thanks to Julia Benz, Larissa Fuhrmann, Goethe Institut Khartoum & the wonderful people of Khartoum
When german Pro-skater Samuel Beyer first travelled to Sudans buzzing capital Khartoum in late 2014 to host a skateboarding workshop, he found a place this subculture had not reached yet. So he started from scratch, teaching the basics to a group of local kids. One of them stood out: Momen, a 14-year old boy from Omdurman. His natural talent for skating and his will to improve rapidly grew into a strong passion for the sport. So when Samuel left, his protégé naturally continued to skate the dusty roads of Khartoum - steadily improving. When Samuel returned to Sudan for another workshop under the roof of "Yalla Khartoum", an intercultural exchange program, he & Momen reunited. Since we were part of the exchange to shoot a documentary about the "Yalla Khartoum" project, it was a no-brainer to spend some time with Momen to see what he is up to.
"Yalla Khartoum" is a community of people coming together to support and celebrate urban arts and youth cultures in Sudan in the context of an intercultural exchange. More Information: yallakhartoum.com/ Long Documentary Trailer: vimeo.com/180168530
"If you respect the skateboard, it will respect you and become your best friend." - Momen
