Reposting @thecanncierge: ⠀ "“What does cannabis even mean?! Oh...marijuana.” We have to talk about this antiquated term, ya’ll. The scientific term, #Cannabis, has been very intentionally replaced with the term “Marijuana” over the last 100+ years. Curious why? In the 30s, big pharma was a mere ember of its current opiatic bonfire status in the US. At the time, Harry Anslinger, head of the newly formed US Bureau of Narcotics, oversaw the Dept of Prohibition *and* was homeboys w/ contemporary capitalists Rockefeller, Hearst, Cornell, DuPont, etc.: racist dudes trying to sell newspapers, cars, pills or Nylon - but first had to eradicate the competition, cannabis & hemp. Since the two were ubiquitous in meds and threads in the early 20th century, there was a massive societal shift needed for Americans to look to the new drug of aspirin and futuristic material nylon over the plant derivatives that were just so darn effective. Alcohol prohibition had just ended, since Anslinger had been a pivotal voice behind it he now needed a new j-o-b. Before prohibition’s end, Anslinger publicly espoused the belief that cannabis wasn’t dangerous and that "there is no more absurd fallacy" than the idea it makes people violent criminals. His critics argue he pivoted not due to objective evidence but self-interest due to the obsolescence of his Department. Black people, Mexican immigrants, jazz musicians & entertainers were scapegoats in yellow journalism & Federal regulation. Painting them as exotic, drug-crazed criminals, affluent white capitalists blamed cannabis “dangers” on people of color, attempting (and succeeding) in associating cannabis to “the other”, leading the public away from cannabis - and straight to pills. Capitalists & the Government started calling the plant “Marijuana” to rebrand it as foreign, Anslinger leveraged yellow journalism to stoke fear. One example: the film #ReeferMadness, which helped shape ill-gotten notions for a dozen generations. I’m not going to lecture anyone but rather lead by example. I’ve changed my vocabulary, and while I understand the word ‘marijuana’ is familiar, why perpetuate a word rooted in racism? Education leads to social change
