"New York City-18th April 1995...a truly dismal & dark day in NYC-these were taken in the dullest imaginable corporate office in the Sony records building, Jeff didn’t want to be there but we had a laugh anyway (Yes, he is on a coat hanger)"-Steve Gulick via IG

“I photographed Jeff Buckley once. It was in the Sony offices in NYC—a sterile room. It was raining. He didn’t want to be there—nor did he want to know me—until I suggested we do the ‘ugly session.’ We tried to make him look ugly. On some of the shots, Jeff stuck jelly beans over a couple of teeth and flattened his hair tightly to his head. I hung him on a coat hanger and he pulled some faces. I got in real close with a wide-angle lens to distort his features. He looked great in every photo I’d seen of him—he was obviously so bored with the soul-destroying rigors of endless promotion and posing for cameras. We had fun. He was really into trying to look rough.”- Steve Gullick from “Steve Gullick: A Kick Up The Arse” LA Record, January 18, 2008.

233 E. 12th Street, #2C
Buckley’s East Village apartment–two narrow, shoebox-shaped rooms connected by a spiral staircase–is done in Young Intellectual Rock Musician Classic. Which means there’s no furniture except for an unmade bed; cluttering the floor are clothes, amps, and the works of Rimbaud, Rilke, and Kerouac; serving as a window curtain is a dark-green bath towel.-Village Voice, Nov. 14, 94

His apartment is located on the edge of the "Lower East Side", a hotspot for bohemian life in the lower parts of Manhattan. According to the visitors, he burns incense there and has for furniture only an unmade bed, disks and collections of poetry in bulk (Rilke, Rimbaud, Kerouac...).-Liberation, February 11, 1995

"I've got a real apartment!" With Stine's help, he had found a $900-a-month apartment at 233 East 12th St, between 2nd and 3rd Aves in the East Village. Scrunched in a tree-lined block of brownstones and old tenements, a fire escape hanging over its entrance, the narrow building had a brown-brick exterior; it's narrow, dingy lobby featured circular florescent lighting and faded carpet. The apartment itself was a quirky duplex, its first floor housing a small living room, kitchen, and a spiral staircase that connected to the top floor, Jeff's bedroom...To Jeff, the apartment was nothing short of ambrosial. "The upstairs is my living room, my kitchen, my sex room, my thinking room," he wrote in his journal. "The downstairs is where I do my love, hour upon hour when I celebrate my music, my work-the underworld...Someday soon I'll be someone who is known not only as a guy who sings but also the lost world in poetry, surreal...innovator supreme, artist, the hardest of the core..."-from Dream Brother

Jeff's appartament was number 2D at 233 East 12th St, off 3rd Ave, right around the corner from the recently opened East Village cinema and a few blocks away from St. Mark's Place, where he'd cut the record this trip was promoting. He lived modestly considering he'd signed a healthy record deal. His home was a little two-story walk-up with hardly any furniture. The bedroom was in the bottom half, a futon on the floor, the sparse decoration just some giant purple candles that had melted onto the bedside shelf. It had a wall of exposed brick, and there were a bunch of odd-looking Indian instruments and piles of cassettes next to his stereo. Off that was a tiny kitchen area, its sink always crammed with dirty dishes. The bathroom was on the little floor above, up a spiral staircase.-Dave Lory, from his book Jeff Buckley: From Hallelujah to the Last Goodbye
