American Sentiment - Patriotism

As we all grit our teeth as we await the November 3, 2020 election results, feverishly check our various feeds too many times over the day and forget to eat after clocking coffee number 10 - take a moment to reflect on what you feel about it all, all four years and then some.

American Sentiment is my latest project where I have reached out to Americans living abroad in various countries to ask them how they deal with it all. In more ways than one, this project is a simple catharsis, a look in the mirror for someone who has not been home in more than 5 years. I've watched, especially this year, with a wrenching heart from my various apartments in various countries, always hours behind, waking up to the worst parts and feeling like there is nothing that I can do.

I will be releasing these short clips in the lead up to a larger edit. In this section, we talk about feeling patriotic and what it means when you're not (or can't be) at home.

This is an ongoing project and would love to hear from everyone interested in taking part as we count the votes and deal with the end of 2020. Message or email at [email protected]

I made this image for a project on a young Cambodian chef who has introduced red tree ants, or weaver ants, to his menu at a popular Phnom Penh restaurant. Weaver ants are generally not sold in markets like crickets and spiders, so Chef Nal employs his family to source the tasty buggers. Another outtake from my current project on collecring weaver ants in the pronvice of #Cambodia. Hong, Chef Nal's brother, picking an ant off his ankle in between scouting for low laying branches that are easily accesible.
