Day 17: The Noid! In 1986 Domino’s Pizza ad agency Group 243 hired animator and producer Will Vinton to design a mascot that would be the physical representation of the challenges in getting fresh pizza delivered in 30 minutes. The “Avoid the Noid” campaign was a hit and soon made the Noid into pop culture icon. The Noid was a toy line, video game and there was even a planned Saturday morning cartoon series for the character, but was scrapped amid complaints that it was merely for advertising and not suited for kids. Unfortunately in 1989, Kenneth Lamar Noid, a mentally ill man, thought the ads were making fun of him, and in his paranoia, held 2 Dominos employees as hostages for over 5 hours in Atlanta Georgia. Noid spent 3 months in a mental institution and committed suicide in 1995.
