John Egan couldn't go a second without confessing his love in some way. Nearly losing an eye to gift a bike, the nickname, singing 'Blue Skies' while looking directly at him, getting demoted on purpose, swapping out his coat, finding radio parts, not letting anyone pack Buck's locker, laying his life on the line by stepping in front of a gun for him. This man revealed his feelings for Gale Cleven in every single scene.

Thinking about how Gale means “strong wind” and “joy” meanwhile Egan means “little fire”.
It’s uncanny how well their names poetically parallel the dynamic of their relationship. Gale has an undeniably strong influence on John’s mood and temperament.
Wind can either feed the fire or put the fire out.
Gale has the power to pacify John unlike anyone else. John’s fondness for Gale makes him soft and gentle. The lighting in this scene really evokes feelings of warmth, security, and love:
But Gale also has the power to make him worse. John was heartbroken by the idea of losing Gale and instantly became more reckless and destructive. The red color of the phone booth could symbolize his dread and anger at hearing the news that Buck’s plane went down:
In conclusion, Buck and Bucky don’t have a water/fire (aka opposites attract) dynamic, but rather, a wind/fire dynamic, where Buck has a sense of agency/influence over Bucky.

Buck: What's wrong, why do you both look so sad?
Bucky: Sit down with us so we can tell you.
Buck: *sits down*
Curt: The bench is freshly painted.
