Ha-Yun couldn’t breathe.
Her mother was hugging both her and Soo-Chul too tight. All their faces were practically squished with each other.
“Eomma… can’t… breathe…” wheezed out Ha-Yun.
The woman let go of her children. She looked at them with sad eyes as she brushed their hair with her hands. “I’m going to miss you two.”
“Eomma, it’s just a month,” said Soo-Chul.
“Still!” she protested.
Then, they heard the doorbell and a bark from the main door. Ha-Yun’s face brightened up and adjusted her glasses. She knew exactly who was at the front door. So, she quickly went and opened the door to meet a familiar cute fluffy face and his cute owner. Wait. Did she just call Tae Man cute?
Moving on, Tae Man was holding his puppy, Flanders. Ha-Yun picked him up and cooed at him. "Aww, little Flanders came to say goodbye to me? You are so cute." Tae Man coughed. "Excuse me, Flanders is here to check in his reservation at Hotel Hwang."
Ha-Yun pouted. "I'm gonna miss you, you little furball." She brought the dog inside, leaving the other teen outside. She heard him sigh loudly and stepped inside.
"Eomma, appa! Tae Mannie's here."
"EOMONI ABEOJIIIII!!!" Tae Man hugged the adults tightly. "I'm going to miss you both."
Ha-Yun's father let go of the boy's embrace and patted his shoulder. "Don't get yourself in too much trouble." He leaned in close and whispered, "And don't let guys get too comfy with our Yunnie."
"Yah, appa! I heard that." Ha-Yun pulled Tae Man away from her parents as said boy winked and nodded at her dad.
The three high school seniors stood in line as they bowed their farewells to the parents. "Stay safe, kids!" the mum yelled out as they left the house.
As they walked to school, Tae Man took Ha-Yun's bag and slung it on his shoulder. "Did you pack enough chocolate?"
"Yeah, I even stuffed some in Soo-Chul's bag."
"I packed more just in case."
The girl smiled at him. "Thanks."
"Ew, guys. I don't want to be a third wheel at 7 am in the morning," said Soo-Chul.
The two best friends wrapped their arms around him. "Aww, our Soo-Chul's just sad his best friend lives far away," said Tae Man.
"It's ok, oppa. We won't ignore your presence."
"Yah! Get off me, you two!"
The two burst out laughing at the annoyed boy. "Come on, we're going to be late," Soo-Chul said as he adjusted his bag on his shoulders.
~~
"Wah, it seems like mostly everyone's here," said Ha-Yun as she looked around the class. She didn't expect her classmates to willingly sign up for this program so she assumed they were forced to do it for the extra points.
"Yah, Wang Tae Man, are you selling gum?" Soo-Chul said beside her. The said boy was building a gum castle.
"Yes."
"To chew them after meals?"
"It feels stale after."
So-Yoon and Junhee sighed. Tae Man heard them and offered them each a piece. "Do you want one?"
"Yah, just brush your teeth!"
The girls threw the gum at him and Soo-Chul smacked his head. Only Ha-Yun comforted him. "I brought an extra toothbrush and toothpaste. You better use them."
Tae Man pouted. "Fine..."
Her attention diverted when she saw her girl best friend coming in. "Yah, Lee Nara!"
"Hi, Ha-Yunnie!"
Ha-Yun was just about to ask her a question when Duk-joong screamed Nara's name from the other side of the class. The two girls' heads turned to see Kimchi trying to shut his best friend up while his cheeks were blushing.
Ha-Yun turned to Nara with a teasing smile and was about to say something when Mrs Park and some military dude came in. She crossed her arms. "Is the universe against me talking today?"
Her friend laughed and told her to go sit at her place. She did as told but noticed Soyeon being captivated by the military guy. Ha-Yun silently laughed as her friend slapped Wutaek away.
"I have someone to introduce to you all," announced Mrs Park.
The military guy saluted. "Loyalty. Nice to meet you. I'm First Lieutenant Lee Chun Ho, who will be Class 3-2's platoon leader."
Ha-Yun sat up straighter. His seriousness gave her a nervous feeling. This military training was getting too real.
"First Lt. Lee will explain about the training," said Mrs Park.
"Yah, he has a diamond on his forehead," Il-ha pointed out.
Mrs Park quickly shushed them as Lt. Lee took the podium. "You'll be assigned to the Second Platoon of the Sungjin Division Combat Unit, and I'll be your platoon leader. Most of the training will take place after school when your regular classes are over."
The class wasn't happy with that. What do you mean after 8 hours of school, they have military training? They were already tired after 1 hour of class. Ha-Yun took out her chocolate and took a bite.
Lt. Lee continued, "On days when you have agendas, training will take priority over classes. So don't get confused later. Banjang?"
Yoojung stood up. "Yes?'
"You're the Senior Private."
"What's that?" Ha-Yun asked Nara. "It means she will be our leader if the commander isn't here. Which is basically the same duties as Class President."
"Next, I'll select a clerk who'll record your training, as well as your videos to send home. Any volunteers?"
Nobody raised their hand.
"No one? Broadcasting Club, anyone?"
No response.
"Then I'll randomly select-"
"Mr. Commander?" interrupted Mrs Park. "Can I recommend someone? Young-Hoon-ah, will you have a go?"
"Me?"
"Yes. I think you'd learn a lot from the experience."
"What should I learn?"
Il-ha spoke up. "Jang Young-Hoon. Just do it. It's not a big deal."
"Then do it yourself," Ha-Yun muttered. Tae Man snickered quietly at her retort.
Young-Hoon turned to Il-ha. "Then you do it." Ha-Yun's jaw dropped as Tae Man's laughs were shushed by Mrs Park.
"Give it a go and if you don't like it, I'll let you swap," said Mrs Park.
"I have to study. I don't want to waste my time."
"Damn..." whispered Tae Man. Even Ha-Yun was surprised by his answer.
"That's fine," said Lt. Lee. He looked around and his eyes settled on Kimchi. "You there, Private."
Kimchi looked surprised and turned to Wutaek to double-check. "He means you, idiot," said Wutaek. "Who... me?" Kimchi asked Lt. Lee.
"You're the clerk. Any objections?"
A few giggles were heard when Kimchi reluctantly agreed to the job.
Then, Lt. Lee said, "You get three bonus points."
"What?!"
"So does the Senior Private."
"Just like that?!"
"So many points..."
"There's a bonus point system separate from the extra CSAT points. You'll be scored for your attitude and aptitude, and ten bonus points equals one extra CSAT point. Accumulate 30 penalty points and you'll be discharged. All the extra CSAT points you earned will be scrubbed."
"I knew something was up," Tae Man said to Ha-Yun. The girl nodded. "They won't make it easy."
"Then, we'll head to the dormitory," said Lt. Lee.
Ha-Yun turned to Tae Man. "The school's big enough for dorms?"
~~
The school's big enough for dorms. They're using the lower form empty classes. The girls' dorm is next to the boys'. So Ha-Yun could hear the boys' excitement next door. Meanwhile, the girls are unpacking all their makeup and other necessities.
Ha-Yun was watching Aesol, Yoojung, and Nara play Go-Stop. It was fun watching Nara bluff the other two by pretending to not know how to play. She nearly choked on her strawberry milk when the other two caught on.
"Yah yah yah, guys!" called out Hana. "What does 'personal firearms' mean?"
"I don't know," said Soon-Yi.
"Personal guns, you idiot," said Bora, eyes staying on her tablet.
"Isn't it too early for us to get guns?" asked Ha-Yun to the three girls in front of her.
Nara shrugged. "I don't know but I'm kinda excited."
Ha-Yun rolled her eyes. "Of course you are..."
She noticed one of the military leaders assigned to their class walking in. What was her name again? Sergeant... Seo? Ah yes, Sergeant Seo walked in with her hands on her hips. Oh, this meant trouble.
"Attention."
The girls ignored her.
"Attention!"
Now they noticed her.
"Do you think this is a camping trip?"
Soyoon hugged her bag of chips closer to her chest.
"Listen carefully. Any items that you won't need here must be submitted at once." She held up a stuffed teddy bear. "What is this?"
Soon-Yi tried to snatch it from her but the sergeant was faster. "Curling irons, toys, lipsticks!"
The girls hurriedly tried (but failed) to hide all their items as the military woman continued to point out all the banned items. "Foundation, perfume... Scented candle- A scented candle??"
Soyeon blew out the flame and smiled sheepishly at the woman. The woman sighed and continued, "Your foundation, lipstick... yah, you little-"
Yoojung, Nara, Aesol, and Ha-Yun got caught trying to hide the cards. The Banjang quickly covered the cards with a blanket and the four smiled innocently at Sergeant Seo who told them not to move as she moved on to Bora.
"What? Cigarettes?"
Bora rolled her eyes. To be fair, she shouldn't have placed it somewhere obvious.
Sergeant Seo was at her limit. "GIRLS, GET MOVING AT ONCE!"
The girls scurried to get rid of all of their banned items. Ha-Yun worriedly approached the sergeant and asked, "Snacks are allowed right?"
"What snacks?"
"You see, I need to eat chocolate sometimes..." The girl was clearly nervous to talk about her condition.
"Ha-Yun-ah." Yoojung appeared beside her. I'll talk to the sergeant for you."
Ha-Yun sent an appreciative nod to Yoojung and left to help the others.
"Yah, Sunshine!" called Bora. "Can you help hide my cigarettes?"
~~
Class 2 gathered at the school field. Ha-Yun was in between Tae Man and Soo-Chul in the line to get their firearms. "Did you get anything confiscated?" Ha-Yun asked the two.
The two boys shook their heads. "Deokjoong's figurines did though. I swear I saw him tear up," said Soo-Chul. "How about you, Yunnie? Are your chocolates safe?"
The girl nodded. "Yeah, thanks to Yoojung."
"Wahh, there's nothing that girl can't do," awed Tae Man.
Suddenly, Ha-Yun felt a pang of jealousy shooting through her. Her lips formed into a frown.
Tae Man noticed her change of expression. "Yah, Sunny. Are you ok?"
"Hm?" The girl quickly smiled and adjusted her glasses. "I'm fine. Just felt weird for a second."
Tae Man smiled back and ruffled her hair. He turned around just in time as the line was moving. Ha-Yun looked back at her brother who had an annoyed expression on him. "What?" she asked.
Soo-Chul just sighed. "One day you'll understand. Now, hurry up. You're holding up the line."
After getting their guns, the classmates gathered at the benches. Tae Man was helping his best friend tie her hair up. He liked doing it and Ha-Yun had to admit, he did it better than her.
Ha-Yun inspected her own firearm. It felt weird holding it. She never thought she'd hold something with a purpose to kill. Her whole ambition is saving lives not taking them. She could only hope the medical training would come faster. "Is this even safe?" she pondered.
"Is military training itself safe?" Young-Shin said from in front of her. She liked talking to him. He was one of the few rational ones in the class. They'd have gossip sessions about the dumb things their classmates do.
"Good point." The girl sighed. "I'm just worried someone might accidentally shoot someone else."
"Don't worry yourself too much, Sunshine-"
He was interrupted by the sound of five of their classmates, including Wutaek, pointing their guns at Tae Man. Ha-Yun pointed to them and turned to Young-Shin. "My case in point."
Tae Man ran from the group as they started chasing him to the field. Soo-Chul stood up and joined them. "YAH, DO SOO-CHUL COME BACK HERE! I DON'T NEED YOU TO GET SHOT TOO!" yelled Ha-Yun to no avail.
Sergeant Kim Won Bin also came and tried to stop them. He also failed.
"Yah, ahjussi!" called out Soyeon.
"I'M NOT AN AHJUSSI!"
Ha-Yun and Young-Shin snickered at his reaction. It seemed like she hit a critical spot.
"I'm... 21. I'm only two years older than you guys."
Ha-Yun's jaw dropped. "I call bullshit," said Young-Shin. "Ditto," she replied.
"Ahjussi," Soyeon said again.
"Hm?" Sergeant Kim replied before realizing. He took another bullet.
"Can I get a clean one?" asked Soyeon. "This one looks used."
"They're all used," said the sergeant. "Come on down at once!"
A whistle interrupted him. It came from Lt. Lee. He looked pissed. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?"
Silence.
"ASSEMBLE!"
Everyone reluctantly got up and assembled on the field. Ha-Yun quickly smacked Soo-Chul and Wutaek's head, plus kicked Tae Man's leg because he was too tall for her. "I'll kill you guys later," she angry-whispered.
"Yes, ma'am," the three chorused.
Lt. Lee began to walk between the class, forcing them to separate like the Red Sea. "The firearms that you just received... could save..." he stopped in front of Il-Ha. "Or kill you." He snatched the boy's gun.
"He finally did what I wanted to do. It's dangerous that he's holding a gun. Damn, I need chocolate," thought Ha-Yun.
Lt. Lee continued, "In times of emergency, the only thing you can trust isn't your friend or colleague next to you..." He held up the firearm. "...but your firearm in your hand. So is it OKAY for you... to handle it carelessly?"
The classmates around Ha-Yun hung their heads. She finally let out a breath of relief. That's one less thing to worry about.
"I am asking you guys," commanded Lt. Lee.
"No, it's not okay," chorused the class.
Lt. Lee pointed to his right. "See that goalpost over there?"
Ha-Yun looked at the goalpost. Oh no.
"The first three people."
Ha-Yun looked around if anybody else caught on but everyone was just confused.
"Go."
She noticed Young-Shin adjusting his glasses whilst inching away. "Yah, Jo Young-Shin!" she ran after him as he started sprinting. The rest of the class followed suit.
Somehow, Jang-Soo managed to surpass both of them and got first, Ha-Yun and Young-Shin fell in line behind him. The two of them sent a death glare at the champion.
Jang-Soo shrugged. "You guys are slow."
~~
The day ended with the girls walking dragging themselves back into the dorms. Ha-Yun placed her gun next to her bed and fell face flat on the mattress.
"I'm dying." She heard Yeonju say.
"Me too," said Soyeon. "I'm dying because I'm so smitten by the platoon leader. He's totally my type!"
Ha-Yun laughed in her pillow.
"Yah... what about our handsome classmate, Do Soo-Chul?" asked Yeonju.
That made Ha-Yun sit up. "Yah! Don't talk about my brother like that. It's disgusting."
"Sorry, Sunshine. Yeonju's right," said Hana.
Ha-Yun covered her ears with her pillow. She had enough.
"It's okay, Ha-Yun-ah. He's not mature enough," said Soyeon.
"Thank you for noticing."
Nara nudged her. "Says you. Tae Man's the most immature in our class."
"No he isn't!" denied Ha-Yun. "Sure, he usually is but you guys never take him seriously anyway." She crossed her arms. "I don't even know how he relates to this conversation."
"The reason why you're so defensive about him is why," teased Soyeon.
Ha-Yun's ears turned pink. "I don't get what you mean-"
"Girls, girls, look at my rash!" exclaimed Hana. "This is what happens when I'm in the sun even for a short moment."
Soyeon worriedly checked her own arms. "What about me?"
Ha-Yun gave them her large tube of sunscreen. "I knew you guys would forget to wear it."
The two girls quickly rubbed sunscreen on their arms. "That's not how it works- Nevermind."
"Guys, hand over your rifles. Don't leave them everywhere," said Yoojung.
Ha-Yun, being the only one who heard her, picked up her gun and stored it. Yoojung sent her an appreciative nod and looked back at the rest. "Yah!"
"I swear this is like the fifth time today someone had to scream to grab their attention," mumbled Ha-Yun as she headed back to her bed.
"Do you want to do that race again?" threatened Yoojung. Damn, didn't know she was capable of being scary.
~~
It's nighttime and Ha-Yun forgot where she put her conditioner. She headed into the boys' dorm next door. "Chul-ah, did I pack my conditioner in your bag?"
"Yah, I thought you only packed your chocolates in here." Her brother handed her his bag.
Ha-Yun rummaged through the bag and found the bottle. "Found it!"
Soo-Chul rolled his eyes and snatched back his bag. Wutaek laughed at the siblings' interaction. "Might as well use his whole bag, Ha-Yunnie."
"Yah, Im Wutaek, say your last words," she said before tackling Wutaek down.
The girl was picked up by a pair of familiar arms. "Come on, Sunny. There's no need for violence," said Tae Man as he adjusted her glasses.
Ha-Yun blew her hair out of her face and sent a glare at Wutaek who stuck his tongue out. It's as if she had two brothers.
Then, Il-Ha came running in. "Yah, this is crazy! Gather around."
Everyone formed a circle around him to see the thing on his phone. Ha-Yun rested her chin on Tae Man's shoulder. The video was showing a bunch of soldiers at a zoo who SHOT THE LIONS?!
"What's wrong with them?!" she exclaimed.
"Wahh shibal, isn't this fake?" asked Wutaek.
"Yeah, it's got to be," said Huirak. "Why would soldiers kill animals? This is totally fake."
"No."
Everyone's heads turned to Deok-Joong. "I've seen this before," he said seriously; he climbed on the tables and sat on it. "You see, one of the things that the government does before war breaks out... is getting rid of the animals in zoos. Tigers! Lions! Elephants! They kill such vicious animals."
"But why?" asked Kimchi.
"What he said," Ha-Yun signaled to the Nobita-looking dude.
Duk-Jeong turned to them. "If starving animals escape... they'll eat people. That's why."
"Then what about the animals that aren't vicious?" asked Tae Man.
"Well... they'll be just left there to starve and die."
"That's too cruel," said Ha-Yun. Tae Man nodded.
Wutaek snatched Deok-Joong's bag of chips. "Starve to death, you idiot."
"Yah, let me eat the chips-"
"Hold on." Young-Shin grabbed his shoulder. "If what Deok-Joong is saying is true... it means a war has broken out."
Ha-Yun took a bite of her chocolate and offered it to Tae Man who happily accepted it.
"That's right," said Deok-Joong. "It's either that or it will begin very soon."
Ha-Yun shuddered. Tae Man placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "No way," he said. "Deok-Joongie, who told you that?"
"What?"
"Where did you hear about it?"
"Oh, Machine Gun Parade March. Animation."
Tae Man rolled his eyes. "Aish..."
Everyone walked away from the weeb...
"YOU DESERVE A BEATING, YOU PIECE OF SHIT!"
Tae Man placed him in a headlock. The rest joined him in the abuse. Ha-Yun took Tae Man's neck pillow and hit Deok-Joong's head.
Unbeknownst to them, Lt. Lee walked in upon hearing the commotion. "WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?"
Everyone stopped. Tae Man, Soo-Chul, and Young-Shin immediately hid Ha-Yun behind them. Lt. Lee looked at Young-Hoon.
"Where are you going?"
"I have to study."
"You're not allowed to go off on your own. If you want to study, do it here."
"They're too loud. I can't focus here." He glanced back. "Kwon Il-Ha over there has his cell phone."
Lt. Lee entered the room more and looked straight into Il-Ha's eyes. "You're not allowed to keep your cell phone. Did you not know that?" He held out his hand. "Hand it over."
Il-Ha groaned. "Hurry up," whispered Wutaek. Il-Ha reluctantly handed the phone to their platoon leader.
"You violated the rules for cell phone use. You get three penalty points."
"Okay, sure," said Il-Ha mockingly.
"I swear he needs a good punch of sense knocked in him," thought Ha-Yun.
Lt. Lee turned around and left the room. Il-Ha approached Young-Hoon. "Yah, I'l talk to you later."
"We can talk now."
"Aish, you little piece of-" Il-Ha was just about to punch him when-
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" Lt. Lee appeared at the door again. "Follow me, both of you. And private Hwang Ha-Yun?"
Ha-Yun peeked her head from behind Tae Man's shoulder. "Yes, sir?"
"You better be out of this room by the time night watch starts."
She saluted. "Yes, sir."
~~
Ha-Yun, in fact, stayed a bit longer than she should. Not her fault when Wutaek invited her to a game of Uno, one of the few games the military let them play and only at night. See, she usually wouldn't say she'd actually kill someone. But if it's Wutaek, then yes.
He was on his fifth round of winning. One last card in his hand. "I swear you are cheating, Im Wutaek."
"You just have a skill issue, Ha-Yunnie," he said as he placed his last card. "Uno Game."
"YAH, COME HERE!" she grabbed him by the collar. Then a rumble came that made her lose her grip. Thankfully, Tae Man caught her in time before her face planted on the table.
"Yunnie, are you okay?" asked her brother.
"Yeah, I'm fine." She straightened out her clothes. "What was that?"
"That almost made me jump," said Wutaek.
Tae Man still hadn't loosened his grip around Ha-Yun's waist. "Do you think the three are okay?" he asked referring to Il-Ha, Young-Hoon, and Kimchi.
Soo-Chul coughed upon seeing Tae Man's hand placement. That made the two immediately separate from each other with blush tinting their cheeks.
"I'm sure Lt. Lee is with them," said Ha-Yun as she finished her bar of chocolate. However, she had a bad feeling in her stomach.
~~
Class 3-2, Hwang Ha-Yun
Hi, eomma, appa! Soo-Chul and Tae Man are doing fine. It's hard to get them out of trouble on the first day. They almost got themselves shot. I don't think they should be given guns.
My other classmates are doing well too. Remember Nara? She's loving it. Her grandpa used to be in the army and already taught her how to shoot a gun. It's scary sometimes. Yah, Kimchi! I can see you blushing behind the camera.
(Ha-Yun-ah!)
BAHAHAH!! That was Kimchi. He's our class' clerk. He's the one who records everything that we do. If you forgot how he looks like, just imagine Nobita from Doraemon.
(Hey!)
Okok sorry sorry. Eomma, appa. My friend, Soyeon, has a crush on our commander. She used to love coming over just to talk to oppa but now apparently she likes mature men. Can't judge her though. The lieutenant can be dashing. Kimchi, don't tell anyone I said that.
Oh! And I have this classmate, Young-Hoon. He always studies and never talks to anyone. I tried offering a chocolate to him and he declined. Who declines chocolate?! I pity him though. It's hard being pressured to always be at the top of the school.
And it's even harder when Kwon Il-Ha keeps picking on him. Like what's his deal?
Yoojung was also very nice to me. She helped explain my condition so I could keep my supply of chocolate.
And Tae Mannie-
(Ha-Yun-ah)
Yes?
(All that rambling and you forgot about yourself)
Oh. I'm fine.

Say Don't Go ------------------------------------------------ Julie and the Phantoms Fanfic
Reggie Peters x Fem!reader
Summary: A lot of people have probably screamed like a maniac to a Taylor Swift song when they're alone, right? But what if a certain ghost accidentally showed up at the wrong time?
Note: This has nothing to do with the song. I just have an obsession with the chorus. Go stream 1989 TV.
[485 words]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reggie Peters poofed in her room just as he always did. Usually, he was lucky enough to not intrude on her doing something she wouldn't want anyone to see but this time was kind of bad timing.
He leaned against her wall as he watched her dance around the room with a hairbrush in her hand as a mic. A song he kept hearing her hum lately was blasting on her speakers while she belted out just as loud.
'Why'd you have to lead me on? Why'd you have to twist the knife? Walk away and leave bleedin', BLEEDIN''
Reggie muffled his chuckle when she screamed at literal air as if it were a man who had just broken her heart. He never thought the girl in front of him would charm him even more but here he was. He had to admit though, that the song did want to make him dance and sing himself.
'Why'd you whisper in the dark? Just to leave me in the night Now your silence has me screamin', SCREAMIN''
"Screamin'!" Reggie shouted out accidentally. He didn't want to blow off his cover that early. Without looking back, she immediately paused the music and scrambled to hide the fact that she was jamming out alone.
"I was doing nothing!" She said and her eyes widened as she saw Reggie with his ears red and face covered by his hands. "Reggie!"
The ghost boy slowly revealed his face. "How'd you know it was me?"
"Reggie... how long have you been standing there?"
"Uhhh, not long enough to see you dance and sing!"
The girl blushed and lay down on her bed to bury her embarrassed face in the pillows. "You saw everything..." She sounded muffled through the pillow.
Reggie sat next to her and stroked her hair. "To be fair, it was a great song and I think you rocked it."
Unintelligible noises were heard from her. He laughed and took the pillow from her to reveal a frown on her face. He cupped her cheeks and said, "I'm being totally serious right now. I didn't expect you to hit that note."
She blushed even more and stood up. "I should leave before I embarrass myself even more."
Reggie grabbed a hold of her hand. "Don't go!"
She spun around to look at him. "What did you just say?"
"Uhh, don't go? I'd like to listen to more songs with you."
A bright grin broke on her face. "Really?"
The boy nodded excitedly so she took her laptop and sat next to him. She quickly typed in the artist's name into the search engine on Spotify. "I am absolutely positive you'd love her debut album."
"Oh yeah? The song you were playing might be my all-time favorite, though."
"Yeah, 'cause that's literally the only song you've heard, dummy."
"Still! Oh oh, but what's the name of the song?"
Say... Don't... Go...

“Us?!”
“Yah, do you think we’d use guns like in CSGO?”
“We’re going to die.”
“Shibal shibal shibal.”
Class 3-2 didn’t expect their last year of high school would be military training. Well, that’s an interesting way to go out with a blast. Literally (hopefully not). Ha-Yun quietly took out her favorite chocolate from her bag.
“Why’d they do this to us?” asked Ha-Yun as she took a bite.
“There must be a catch.”
She turned to Young Shin who was researching on his laptop. “It’s real,” he announced.
“It’s no April Fools Joke, I guess,” said Tae Man, frowning.
Ha-Yun laughed and hit him playfully with the chocolate. “It’s October, Dummy.”
“Oh yeah.”
Hee-Rak clapped his hands gleefully. “This means we’re not going to learn!”
Ha-Yun rolled her eyes at that exclamation. If they’re not canceling the CSATs, they’ll never hinder their education. She had to applaud his optimism, though. Usually, Hee-Rak is the pessimist of the class.
After offering some chocolate to Tae Man, her attention was caught yet again by the TV. “Regarding third-grade high school students only, there will be military training and existing education at the same time.”
Il-Ha slapped Hee-Rak’s arm which made him yelp in pain. “You jinxed it, asshole.”
The Minister continued, “As such, the government decided to reward students, who agreed to military training, with extra credit for college admissions.”
“What in the bribery is this?” said Ha-Yun. The government seemed to be really desperate if they were offering free credit just for that. Something was terribly wrong.
Ms. Park turned off the TV. The grim expression was still plastered on her face. Ha-Yun understood how worried she might’ve been. If they’re going through military training, they’ll probably get drafted. Ha-Yun ate more chocolate.
“Military training and classes at the same time?” asked Yoo-Jung.
“What’s military training and what’s extra credit for?” asked Soon-Yi. Ha-Yun looked at her blankly. The name explained itself.
“Does this mean we have to take CSAT no matter what?” exclaimed Soyoon.
“It just means we’re doomed!” screamed Joonhee.
Ha-Yun nodded sadly. Doomed indeed. She spoke up, “Maybe they’d make the questions easier since we’d be very busy.”
Soyoon turned to her. “Sunshine, we love your optimism. But as if they’d ever do that.”
The optimistic girl just shrugged. There goes another bite of her chocolate. She could feel Tae Man playing with her hair behind her.
“Silence!”
Ha-Yun was surprised at how quickly everyone went quiet just after one shout. This did not happen often.
Ms. Park continued, “Just as he said, it means you’ll be doing both military training and school classes at the same time. The government said third-grade high school students are only enlistment candidates, so let’s not worry too much.”
“There’s still a chance we’d be drafted…” thought Ha-Yun. She may be an optimist on the outside. But that’s just to make people not worry. Inside, she was the biggest worrier ever. She obviously didn’t want to see her own classmates potentially sacrifice themselves.
Ms. Park asked the Banjang to hand out some forms. Ha-Yun’s eyes widened at the huge amount of text about the terms and conditions of the training. It was getting too real.
“They’re military training agreements,” said Ms. Park. “Take them home and show your parents.”
“Miss!” Joonhee raised her hand. A horrified look on her face. “Are we going to stay together?!”
Ha-Yun smiled brightly. “It’d be like a giant slumber party!”
The boy behind her squeezed her shoulder in agreement. “She’s right.” He then looked to their teacher and asked, “What happens to people who don’t consent?”
“It’s not certain, but you’ll most likely be taking remote classes.”
Ha-Yun frowned. She didn’t like remote classes. Her brain can’t pay attention if she wasn’t in the environment where the person is actually teaching.
“How much credit do we get?” asked the first-ranked student. “Are there different amounts of extra credit you can get?”
“More details will be released later. I’ll share it with you as soon as the Department of Education’s policy comes out. What’s certain is that extra credit is only given to those who took the training. Make sure to get them signed if you’ll participate.”
“Miss, what about the acting and film majors?” asked Hana.
Soyeon raised her hand. “Does that mean we’re going to war?”
“Miss, how about people who aren’t going to college?”
“Miss, how long is the training?”
“What if we drop out in the middle?”
“Where will the training take place?”
The students bombarded the poor teacher with question after question.
“We’re safe right, miss?” asked Ha-Yun.
The homeroom teacher straightened her spine. “I’m sure you’re all surprised and startled.” Her mouth forced on a smile. “It’s the same for me. However, uh, let’s not worry. You just continue your studies and keep doing what you were doing as you train. We can’t forget the years of effort you put in to go to a good college. All right?”
Nobody responded. The class that was known to be the most chaotic was completely silent.
“Pay attention to your classes today!” And with that, the homeroom teacher made her leave.
"Huh? Ms. Park!"
"You can't be leaving like this!"
"You need to answer our questions."
"MS. PARK!"
She shut the door behind her.
"Are you going to go?" asked Tae Man to Ha-Yun. She weighed her options. She knew she'd only go if both Tae Man and Soo-Chul were eager to attend. And that was a 100% confirmation they would. But that didn't stop her from worrying. That's a problem for home later.
"I don't know yet," she simply answered; smiling slightly at him to hide her worry. Her chocolate bar was already fully eaten.
Tae Man patted her head. "There's nothing to worry about, Ha-Yunie." He pulled out her favorite chocolate from his pocket and gave it to her. An emergency bar was always in his pocket just in case.
The two's attention got caught by Deok-Joong's screaming of a war that he assumed was happening right now. That was one of Ha-Yun's suspicions but she didn't want to voice it out. She followed her best friend who went to join in their conversation.
"Yah, but why does it have to be the third grade? What about the first and second years?" asked Deok-Joong.
"I know," said Kimchi. "Shouldn't we be exempt since we're taking the CSAT?"
"That's right! Honestly-"
Tae Man sneakily rests his arm on Deok-Joong as if he was a part of their conversation the whole time. His face was pulled into an expression Ha-Yun knew so well. He was going to spout out some nonsense. She stood beside Kimchi with her arms folded; ready to listen to what he was about to say.
"College admission is everything for the third year. If extra credit on CSAT is promised, how hard would we work? That's why they picked the third graders."
"Tae Man, this is the first time I'm convinced by your words."
Ha-Yun was shocked and clapped her hands proudly. "Wah, I knew there was a brain inside there after all."
With a boosted ego and swagger, Tae Man fist-bumped the two of them. This made Ha-Yun giggle which earned a small smile from Tae Man as he looked at her.
Deok-Joong still had a serious expression on. "A sudden war wouldn't break out, would it?"
"Against who?" asked Tae Man.
"Against them." Deok-Joong pointed to the things outside.
Tae Man stood up. "Come on. It's embarrassing to fight balloons."
"Deok-Joong's not wrong," said Ha-Yun. Tae Man looked at her quizzically. "Little Miss Sunshine, that's a lot coming from you."
She took a bite of her chocolate. "They're asking us to train. It must be something severe."
"The likeliness of us being drafted would probably not be high. We're just reserves," said Young Shin who barged in their conversation as well.
Tae Man immediately hugged Ha-Yun. "It's ok, my Sunny. I'll protect you if there is a war."
Ha-Yun could feel her face heating up. She assumed it was probably because Tae Man is a walking body heater.
"Yah, Wang Tae Man! Get your hands off my sister!" yelled Soo-Chul, coming towards them. In an attempt to annoy him more, the two hugged each other tighter. Soo-Chul pried them away from each other but not before Tae Man snuck in a kiss on her cheek to rile him up. Ha-Yun stood there frozen while her brother chased her best friend.
Kimchi smirked. “Yah, Hwang Ha-Yun. Are you ok?”
“Huh?”
“Off to Love Island are you?”
“Ohhhhhhh.” Deok-Joong finally had entertainment.
“Shut it, Kimchi. We’re strictly platonic and I’m not the one who keeps staring at someone.” She turned her back and walked toward Soo-Chul who was hitting Tae Man; leaving Deok-Joong to attack Kimchi with questions.
Ha-Yun pried her brother off Tae Man. “Soo-Chul-ah, we don’t condone violence in this class.”
Ironically, Young Hoon just head-butted Il-Ha right after she said that. The whole class immediately backed themselves up to the walls. Tae Man and Soo-Chul shielded Ha-Yun at her front. The poor girl had to tiptoe over their shoulders to see what was happening.
The brawl was getting more and more intense. Il-ha literally threw Young Hoon straight into a desk. Oh, there goes Tae Man’s neck pillow. And wow, a flying chair.
“Can’t you guys stop them?” Ha-Yun asked.
The two boys looked at her. “Us?”
“Yeah, you two are men, right?”
With Jang Soo taking the first action, the other guys went to stop them, including Tae Man; though reluctantly. Soo-Chul stayed to guard the girls from getting close to the action. It literally took 7 of the guys to separate the two.
“Why the fuck are those two always fighting?” exclaimed Soyoon.
“It’s funny. The first rank vs the last rank,” said Ha-Yun. If this was any other day, she would’ve stepped in and helped with their injuries. But they were adding on more tension to an already stressful day for no reason.
Il-Ha and Young Hoon managed to escape the grasp of the boys. They stood on opposite sides of the class, staring intensely into each other. Ha-Yun had hoped for the tension to dissipate but it never came when Young Hoon sparked another insult.
“What, you fucking asshole?”
Il-Ha was so close to charging at him when Deok-Joong opened a window. “Oh, it’s the military.”
“They’re here already?” asked Ha-Yun as she looked out the window. She saw a couple of soldiers coming out of the truck and lining up in front of someone who seemed to be the commander. Her eyes weren’t sharp enough to process their faces. She did see a medic truck, though. That was something to look forward to.
“Do you think they’d treat us nicely?” she asked Nara.
“Probably not,” said Nara. Knowing her friend, she was probably excited to shoot a gun. Her grandfather was in the military so she was already taught basic training and shooting while she grew up. She hadn’t been able to practice her shooting since she moved to England.
“I hope one of them is cute.”
The two girls looked at Soyeon with blank stares. “What? Something has to get me through the training if my parents force me to go.”
That made all three girls burst into laughter. Their attention was then caught by their Literature teacher coming in. Everyone hurriedly sat in their seats. Classes finally started.
~~
“Military training?” asked Ha-Yun’s dad at the dinner table.
“Yeah,” said Soo-Chul. “For four months. We will get extra credit for CSATs if we go.”
“Yah, as if the extra credit is the main reason you want to go.” Ha-Yun rolled her eyes knowing her brother just wanted to do the ‘cool military stuff’. She had to hear him and Tae Man fanboy giggle over their hopes for the training the whole walk home.
Soo-Chul sent her a glare and went back to smile with pleading eyes at their dad. “So, can we go, appa?”
Hwang Dal ate his last spoon of rice. “Hmm,” he said while thinking. “What do you think, yeobo?”
Soo-Chul’s mum took a glance at Ha-Yun with slight worry. She cared for the girl like her own daughter. They were very close.
Ha-Yun noticed her look and gave a small smile and nodded. The mum turned back to the dad. “As long as they stay safe.”
“Then, it’s settled. Bring me your papers, I’ll sign them.”
Soo-Chul jumped out of his seat and went to hug his parents. “Thank you, appa eomma!” He skipped happily to his room, immediately calling up Wutaek.
His mum sighed at her son. “Aigoo, what do I do with him?” She stared sternly at Ha-Yun. “Ha-Yun-ah, helped me with the dishes, please.”
“Ok, eomma.”
As they were finally alone in the kitchen, her mum says, “Do you really want to go? I know you’re only saying yes because of the boys.” She knew how close her daughter is with her son and the boy next door. Tae Man practically lived in their house too because his parents are always coming home late.
“It’s ok, eomma. I saw a medic truck just now. I think I can get some experience with the first aid lessons.”
“Aigoo, my little nurse. Make sure to take care of yourself, yeah? Pack a lot of chocolate.”
The daughter simply nodded. She took a box of chocolate from the fridge. Hopefully, it won’t melt at school. “Of course, eomma.”
After leaving her form outside for her dad to sign, she retreated into her room. Her phone was buzzing up with messages from the class group. The girl got comfortable on her bed as she opened up the chat. She read the extra information about the training Ms. Park sent. Apparently, the soldiers can randomly give out points and even take them away based on our acts. She opened the group chat with no teacher that was getting spammed in. She took one look at the complaints and immediately closed her phone.
Suddenly, she heard a knock on her window. She adjusted her glasses as she looked up. The smiling face of Wang Tae Man brought a smile to her face. The boy gestured for her to get out. Ha-Yun climbed out of her window and joined him at their treehouse. It was kind of cold because of the autumn weather so Tae Man draped a blanket around the shivering Ha-Yun. She smiled at him in appreciation.
The two got comfortable then Ha-Yun asked him, "Have your parents signed it?"
"They're not home yet, so I left it on the fridge. They'd see it."
Ha-Yun understood how hard her best friend's home life was. He loved his parents, yes, but they were barely home. Leaving him to spend most of his time with the people next door. He was practically already family at that point.
"Aren't you scared?" she asked in a small voice. Tae Man was probably the only person she was brave enough to share her worries with. He managed to get her through tough times. And vice versa. They need each other.
"Come on, Sunny. It's just training."
"What if we get drafted?"
"Then, like I said earlier, I'd protect you. Of course, your brother will too. Actually, every guy in our class-"
"Then who will protect you? I don't think I have it in me."
That reveal silenced the boy. He held her face so she'd look at him. "You have saved me hundred times before. You are literally my Superman." He started flowing her blanket as if it was a cape. His words and gesture finally made her laugh.
The window from her room suddenly was opened and out came Soo-Chul. He promptly sat in between the two and said, "What'd I miss?"
"We were talking about tomorrow," said Ha-Yun, not wanting to admit her worries anymore. She didn't want to spoil her brother's excitement. "Y'know, how excited we are..."
“I CAN’T WAIT FOR TOMORROW!!” burst out Soo-Chul. He was training for the police academy. Military training couldn’t be that different.
Ha-Yun and Tae Man listened to his giddy rant about what he hoped for the training. “Oh! We will shoot guns!! Isn’t that exciting?! Wutaek and I were screaming at each other-“
“Yah, Do Soo-Chul. What happened to your cool guy facade?” teased Tae Man.
The said boy cleared his throat. “I mean, military training. Cool.”
The other two laughed at his change of behavior. Soo-Chul glared at them. “Shut it, guys. I’m gonna go finish packing.”
“Oh, I forgot,” said Ha-Yun. “I haven’t started.”
“Tsk tsk tsk, Sunny. I can’t believe you forgot such an important thing,” said Tae Man.
“Shut it, Dummy. You go pack your toothbrush and toothpaste.”
“Ah, I already packed a good substitute for that.”
Before shutting her window, she shouted out, “It better not be that gum!”
Ha-Yun noticed Nara and Soyeon texting in their group chat about video calling while packing. She decided to join them. “Whatever that could keep me focused,” she thought. She went to her desk and opened her laptop to join the call.
“Hi, Ha-Yunie!!” Soyeon and Nara waved at her. She saw Soyeon’s room in a giant mess while Nara was chilling and reading a comic.
“Hi, guys! How much have you packed?”
“I’m trying to find my favorite lipgloss while Miss Packed Right After School here is relaxing.”
“Hey, I knew my parents would immediately agree.”
Ha-Yun laughed. “It’s ok, Soyeon. I haven’t even started.” She went to her closet and took out her pink suitcase and laid it out on the floor.
It’s going to be a long night.

Love in War Chapter 1: Just a Normal Day... Wait What? ------------------------------------------------ Duty After School Fanfic
Wang Tae Man x Fem!OC Summary:
The Sunshine of 3-2 didn't expect her senior year to end up in the military during an alien apocalypse…
Hwang Ha-Yun was born to have a bright personality. Her name means sun after all. Everyone calls her the 'Sunshine of 3-2'. Mostly everyone gets along with her until she reaches her boiling point where her temper could be as hot as the sun.
Wang Tae Man, the class clown of 3-2, has been her partner in crime since the fateful day she moved next door. They've been inseparable ever since.
With an alien apocalypse added into the mix and traumas resurfaced, what will happen to their relationship? And will they be able to survive? TW: Anxiety mention, swearing [3205 words] [Other Chapters] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ha-Yun’s stepbrother, Do Soo-Chul, would sometimes join the two troublemakers in the treehouse. But he had his own life. Still, the step-siblings had built a very close bond throughout the years since her dad married his mum. They loved each other like real siblings and Soo-Chul can sometimes take on the role of overprotective big brother. And she would retaliate like an annoyed younger sister.
The three of them would usually walk to school together. Ha-Yun loved these walks since they’d always get to see the sunrise. It’d always make her day. Except for the fact that there were massive purple spheres all over the sky.
Ah, the purple blobs. The spheres were an enigma that's been plaguing the world. It has been a year since they miraculously appeared. Ha-Yun didn’t like keeping up with its status. Honestly, Ha-Yun was terrified of what would happen if it ever fell. What if the impact was like a meteor? What if it was aliens taking over Earth? WHAT IF IT'S BOTH?!
But everything was fine. So far.
Back to their walk, Soo-Chul would take pride in walking between Ha-Yun and Tae Man, not wanting them to be so affectionate with each other. They’re just friends, sure, but that’s not stopping him from setting boundaries for his sister. With him in the middle, it was just easier for the two to bully him.
When they reached school, Soo-Chul would go his separate way. And that left the other two alone. They started to laugh as they made their way to class.
“Will he ever stop keeping us apart?” asked Tae Man.
“He acts as if we’d start making out in front of him,” said Ha-Yun.
Tae Man looked at her and smirked. “Well, do you want to?”
Ha-Yun punched his arm and runs away as he tried to catch her. They stopped when they approached Young Shin.
“Hi, Young Shin-ah!” Ha-Yun smiled brightly at him. “Are those new glasses?”
He returned a smile. “Oh, your ears are red-“
Tae Man suddenly put Young Shin in a headlock. “Any last words?”
Young Shin quickly pulled away after getting a whiff of his scent. “Gosh, please take a shower.”
Ha-Yun burst out laughing. She was used to her best friend’s horrible body odor. That’s why it never really bothered her. But she did remind him every morning to shower, though. He was just stubborn.
Young Shin walked away into the class, gagging, as Tae Man asked Ha-Yun, “Do I really smell?”
“I assume so.”
His infamous mischievous grin formed on his face. He caught up with Young Shin and started to fan the odor to his nose. Young Shin immediately pushed him away. And that made him hit the board where Yoojung was writing something.
Tae Man turned his head towards the Banjang. He raised an eyebrow at her, “Good morning, Kim Yoojung.”
Ha-Yun scowled at their interaction. It’s not like she was bothered if her best friend flirted with another girl or anything. It’s just… never mind. Tae Man used to harbor a crush on Yoojung during middle school. Ha-Yun always had an insufferable time with him because all he did was ogle at Yoojung and talked about her. It came to a point where she accidentally blew up at him. Soo-Chul later called her jealous.
Ha-Yun scoffed at the memory. Her? Jealous because of Wang Tae Man? Ha! Before anyone could notice, she quickly put on her bright smile. She waved at Park Soyoon who was talking with her best friend, Hong Joonhee.
However, Ha-Yun’s eyes trailed to Tae Man who was wishing good morning to each of their classmates. There's something about him trying to make people smile that warmed her heart and her face.
Then, she noticed Soo-Chul trying to draw Im Wutaek, posing like a model. She couldn’t help but giggle at him trying to get the best angle of his best friend. Her stepbrother had no artistic skill in him despite calling himself the next Picasso, but hey, art is subjective.
Ha-Yun went to sit next to Nara who kept stealing glances to a certain someone who sat by the window while reading her horror book. "Yah, Lee Nara. You're staring at Kimchi too much."
That comment caused Nara's cheeks to tint pink. "No, I'm not."
"Whatever you say…"
Ha-Yun knew that both of them liked each other. But both were too shy to admit to each other. Ha-Yun pitied Soo-Chul since he also liked Nara. But at the end of the day, she would support the one Nara actually liked back. She strived to be captain of the Nara-Kimchi ship.
"You should talk to him," says Ha-Yun; Nara just gave Kimchi a small smile which he returned with a small wave. His face turned red as he focused back on his phone.
Nara sent Ha-Yun a glare. "You should admit your own feelings then.”
“For the last time, Nara-yah. I have no feelings for Wang Tae Man.”
“I never said anything about him.”
“Well, you’re insinuating it.”
“Whatever you say…” quoted Nara. Now it’s Ha-Yun’s turn to send her a glare. Nara giggled and returned to her reading.
Speak of the devil, Tae Man approached them. He waves at Nara. “Good morning, Nara-yah.”
“Morning, Wang Tae Man,” she says, monotonously; her eyes not leaving the book.
Disappointed with the reaction, he turned to Ha-Yun. He patted her head and said, “Good morning, Sunny.”
“Good morning to you too, Ronald McDonald.”
“Yah! I told you to stop calling me that.”
“Well, I told you to take a shower.”
“WELL, I did not have enough time.”
“Oh, you had plenty of time if you didn’t spend half an hour having a private concert.”
“I-“
Lee Nara slammed her book on the table. “Yah, you two! If you want to bicker, do it at your own place.”
Tae Man hastily ran to his desk and cowered beneath his neck pillow. “Girls can be so scary sometimes,” he mumbled. Ha-Yun shook her head at him. “Sorry, Nara-yah. He gets on my nerves sometimes.”
“Yet you never leave his side.”
"He's my best friend.”
Nara sighed and went back to her book. Ha-Yun headed back to her desk in front of Tae Man's, until out of nowhere, he slammed his desk very loudly. Ha-Yun almost tripped because of the sudden noise. "Yah! What the hell was that for?"
“Yah! Wang Tae Man!”
“What’s his problem?”
“YOU ATTENTION SEEKER, CUT IT OUT ALREADY!”
Ha-Yun had to hold in a laugh from So-Yoon’s outburst. She hid her smiling mouth behind her hand.
"Yah, Wang Tae Man," called Young Shin. He was usually the one who’d call his stupidity out. "I get you're a nutcase, but please turn on the blinker before you go, okay?"
Tae Man sat up straighter and look him straight in the eye. "I did turn the blinker on."
"What?"
Ha-Yun could only think of one thing that was bound to happen. "Oh no."
As if on cue, the horrible stench made its way through the air.
"OH YOU SON OF A-" exclaimed Wutaek as he snappily covers his nose. He couldn’t finish his sentence and ran towards the closest window he could reach.
The whole class followed suit for the freedom of fresh air, leaving a couple of brave ones who were willing to endure the smell. Ha-Yun searched her backpack for emergency supplies. She could usually handle the stench but God, this time was worse as she heard another fart sound from him. Glaring at Tae Man, she put on her mask and pulled out her trusty air freshener spray (one of the essentials you need as a friend of Wang Tae Man). "Can't you fart in the toilet?"
Tae Man gave her his usual innocent smile. The green neck pillow was still covering his ears from most of the complaints. "When it has to go, it has to go. Speaking of..."
A fart sound was heard.
Young Hoon slammed his pencil frustratedly and left the crime scene. Ha-Yun immediately sprayed the area surrounding Tae Man while contemplating if she should spray it in his eye. She prayed that the spray would be enough to cover up the smell.
Tae Man, undeterred by the situation, smiled innocently and asked, "Can I get some gum? My mouth needs some freshening up."
Ha-Yun smacked his shoulder. With her free hand, not the one holding the spray, mind you. Tae Man, still unfazed, laughed, "I guess that's a 'No' then?"
Ha-Yun held back the sudden urge to hit his head with the spray bottle.
She called out to her classmates, “Yah! Someone test the smell!”
Jang Soo, being the brave volunteer he was, risked his life. He took a whiff. “Disarmed.”
Ha-Yun took off her mask and smelled her surroundings. Ah, a wonderful, no farts at all, rosey vanilla smell. Hell turned to Heaven. She sighed in relief and muttered, "God bless this air freshener."
Tae Man smelled himself. “Hey, I smell nice now. I knew I didn’t have to shower.”
Ha-Yun threw her mask at his face.
Everyone dispersed from the windows, relieved, and stumbled out thank yous to the class Sunshine.
“Ha-Yun-ah! You came prepared,” said Soyeon, hugging her.
Ha-Yun laughed, “I’ve experienced this way too many times.”
Ha-Yun then raised the can in the air and shouted, "Let us all thank the gods of air freshener!" Everyone erupted in cheers and laughter.
The bright girl was stuffing the spray bottle back in her bag when she noticed Nara still by the window. Her eyes trailed to the figure to her left and to her right. She giggled.
“Yah, what are you laughing at?” Her best friend asked. Ha-Yun pointed at the scene at the windows. His burst of laughter was stopped by a slam of Ha-Yun’s hand on his mouth. Her expression said, ‘Shut up and watch’.
Nara left the windows, not noticing Kimchi and Soo-Chul ogling at her. Without the girl they regarded as an angel blocking their view of each other, immediate frowns appeared on their faces.
Because they couldn’t help it, the two besties burst into fits of laughter. That made the two at the window glanced at them and sent a death message to them. Ha-Yun and Tae Man softened their laughter into Tae Man’s pillow. Their heads shot up however when they heard a familiar tune.
The cheery sound of the school bell announced the arrival of their homeroom teacher, Ms. Park. “Settle down!”
The chaos slowly calmed. Kim Deok-Joong didn’t seem to notice the teacher standing right next to him.
“Is it delicious?” She asked sarcastically.
“My goodness!” He exclaimed and ran to his seat.
After Ms. Park has grabbed everyone’s attention, she announced, “I have a gift for all of you today.”
“OOOOHHHH”
Ha-Yun was curious about what she was about to say. She loved Ms. Park. The young teacher always took care of them like her own children. Oh! Ha-Yun wondered if she was going to announce a camping trip or something.
Her excitement immediately dissipated when her teacher said, “Mock exam results from September.”
Crap.
She forgot about that.
Please don’t get her wrong, Ha-Yun’s a clever girl. She hoped to get into a good university to become a nurse. But exams were not her thing. Thankfully, however, she always used her wits to answer the questions with the help of last-minute cramped studying. So hopefully, she’d get a good score.
Ms. Park silenced the class after she said she’d give them out in order of highest to lowest. “Come out when I call your name. First off… first place in our class and our school… Young Hoon.”
Ha-Yun politely clapped for the boy. She wasn’t close to him but they have been classmates for years so there was no harm in showing some support. Especially when the boy managed to stay at the top spot for so long.
She turned her head to the back when she heard something getting thrown. Ah, of course, Kwon Il-Ha ruined the mood. Ha-Yun didn’t understand his vendetta against Young-Hoon. He didn’t do social, so what? The girl liked to think even bullies have good sides of them but Il-Ha could be so rude for no reason. She rolled her eyes and focused back on Ms. Park.
“Second place is Young Soo.”
Him. Ha-Yun was irky about him. She had noticed a couple of times where he would stare at So-Yeon inappropriately like just now. He’s such a pervert who only cared about his studies. She’d avoid interaction with him at any opportunity.
“Third place is Yoo-Jung.”
Despite her scowling earlier, Ha-Yun still cheered for the class president. She was nice and dependable. How could you not love her?
After Yeonjoo, Ha-Yun’s name was called. She couldn’t believe it, she made it into the Top Ten. The happy girl jumped out of her seat and proudly took her results. Wang Tae Man gave the loudest cheer for her. As she sat down, she grinned at him. He ruffled her hair. “Good job, Sunny.”
Her ears turned red at the compliment. She quickly turned to the front to prevent him from noticing.
After Yeon Bora’s name got called, the uncalled was left with two. “All right, two last places tied. The grand finale.”
“Gosh, protect the last places!” Woo Hee-Rak protested.
“That’s right!” affirmed Il-Ha.
Ms. Park looked at them, not pleased. “Protect what? They’re just these two.” She called out to them. “Il-Ha and Hee-Rak, hurry up and come out.”
The two boys stood up and asked for applause. “What even is there to clap for?” Ha-Yun thought. As the two passed her, she couldn’t help rolling her eyes as they made eye contact. Her distaste for the class bullies was evident. Even Bora’s picking on No Ae-Sol gets on her nerves. Though, every time she wanted to step in, Il-Ha was already defending Ae-Sol. She guessed there was a tiny bit of humanity in him after all.
That day was when she was really irritated with Il-Ha, though. This guy simply kicked Young-Hoon’s bag away just because it was in his way. That jerk. Ha-Yun was going to give him a piece of her mind later.
Tae Man noticed her curling up her fists and placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. The gesture immediately calmed her. Ha-Yun might be friendly and happy most of the time. But when people were annoying, she won’t hesitate to blow up. The only one who could prevent it was Tae Man. He’s her defuser.
Suddenly, there was a PA announcement. “To all teachers inside the school building, please come to the Administration Office.”
“Dismissed. Make sure to get ready for classes. Everyone turn in your phones!” said Ms. Park as she left.
Groans were heard by everyone. Banjang went to the lectern and pulled out the phone basket underneath. “Hurry up and turn in your phones!”
Ha-Yun turned around. “Tae Man-ah, give me your phone. I’ll hand it in for you.”
Tae Man quickly took a picture of her and gave her the phone. He grinned. “Thank you, my Sunshine.”
She scowled. “What did you do?!”
“Just a pretty selfie.”
“Yah!”
“Yah! Hwang Ha-Yun, are you not gonna turn in those phones?” Asked the Banjang. She was smiling as if she knew something Ha-Yun didn’t.
“Oh, uh sorry sorry.” She went and gave her the phones.
“Thank you,” said Yoo-Jung. “Anyone else hadn’t turned in?”
As Ha-Yun went back to her seat, she noticed Kimchi was gone. “Where’s Kimchi?” She asked Tae Man.
“I heard Il-Ha made him go see what’s happening.”
“Oh. I hope it’s nothing serious.”
~~
After a while, Ms. Park came back with Kimchi tailing behind her. Weird, it’s supposed to be first period. Even stranger is the fact that the homeroom teacher’s face was grey and grim.
“Everyone,” she said. The class was completely silent. All eyes were on her. Ha-Yun had a feeling whatever she is going to say next is bad.
“It looks like this year’s early admissions will be canceled.”
Canceled?! Ha-Yun turned to Tae Man. “Did I hear that right?”
“Or we both are being delusional.”
Ha-Yun shook her head. The competition will be even worse if all the top students fight for regular admissions. How was she going to join nursing school? She could feel her breathing starting to get heavier.
Tae Man puts a comforting hand on her shoulder. Her breathing slowly goes back to normal. Ha-Yun places her hand on his and squeezed it. A silent thank you.
She glanced around to look at others’ reactions and locked eyes with Soo-Chul. He mouthed, “Are you ok?”
She nodded and smiled slightly which let him sigh in relief. He knew how bad her anxiety could get. But she hasn’t gotten another attack in years since- never mind.
“Ms. Park, what’s the matter?” asked Tae Man.
So-Yoon frantically asked, “Are you really sure?”
“Is it also canceled for other schools?”
“What about people who applied for early admissions?”
The class started to ask questions among themselves. Ha-Yun looked outside the window. Her mind wandered to the purple floating blobs in the sky.
Oh shit.
“Do you think it has something to do with the spheres?” she asked Tae Man. His eyes widened. “Oh shit.”
“Listen to what I’m saying first!” Ms. Park yelled above the noisy commotion. “Only early admission will be canceled and CSAT will be taken as scheduled. Also-“
Even more commotion erupted. Ms. Park grabbed the TV remote and turned to the students. “I’ll explain slowly, so can you all look here?”
She turned on the tv. The noise settled down when they heard the news playing. “Minister of Defense will soon give the national conference on the enlistment of students into the military. We’ll hear the specifics from our reporter who’s at the scene. Reporter Oh Eun Ji, please”
“Students? He means college students, right?” thought Ha-Yun.
The screen cuts to the reporter at the conference. “Yes, I’m at the Ministry of Defense’s briefing room right now. The emergency national conference will be starting soon.”
“Emergency? Is it major?” Tae Man whispered to Ha-Yun. She shrugged.
“Minister of Defense Park Sang Man took the podium just now. Let’s listen to what he’ll be saying.”
This was the first time Ha-Yun saw the face of the minister. She never kept up with politics. Now, she wished she did.
“I’m the Minister of Defense. Dear citizens, almost a year has passed since the appearance of unidentified spheres worldwide.”
Ha-Yun looked at Tae Man and mouthed “I told you.” Tae Man’s mouth was shaped into an o.
“As of now, we can’t confirm their risks, but they can…”
“Isn’t the Minister of Defense pretty high up?” Tae Man asked Ha-Yun.
“He’s up there somewhere.”
“In order to prepare for such events, please understand the issuance of National Mobilisation Law.”
“National what what?”
“Huh?!”
“Besides active duty soldiers, enlisted candidates, reserve force, all males and female adults up to 24 years old…”
“Ah, so it is about college students. Wait, he’s not done yet,” she thought.
“And… the current third-grade high school students will also be drafted.”
Oh. That’s not good.

[560 words] [Other Chapters] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hwang Ha-Yun did not like shooting.
“Yah, Ha-Yun-ah! There’s an alien on your right!” shouted Wang Tae Man. He pointed to an alien creature that was making its way to her.
Ha-Yun quickly tried to aim at the creature. If she missed the shot, she’d be dead.
“Please please please let me get this one,” she mumbled to herself. She took a deep breath. A bead of sweat was threatening to trickle down her temple.
She aimed…
She pulled the trigger…
And missed.
‘You Died’ was displayed on the screen.
“Awww,” Ha-Yun groaned as she placed back the gun on the holder. She watched how the alien stabbed her character repeatedly. That made her squirm and look away. She swore she could’ve gotten it if she wasn’t such a bad shot. Shooting games were never her thing. Too much killing. She only played the shooting ones because of her best friend's pleading.
Tae Man ruffled her dark hair. He was a whole head taller than her. And with that fact, he would always take every opportunity to tease her 160 cm-ness. He’d use her head as an armrest from time to time, he’d comically bend his knees just to be on the same eye level as her, and he’d especially love stealing her stuff and holding it high in the air. She, of course, ends up jumping on him to get it. “It’s ok, Shorty. At least you outlived me.”
Ha-Yun smacked his hand away and glared at him. “Yah, you’re ruining my hair.”
A familiar glint appeared in his eyes that Ha-Yun absolutely loved but despised at the same time. He messed her hair more with both of his hands and pinched her cheeks. “But you look so cute.”
A not-so-foreign heat crept up her neck. She had never felt it before moving to high school. But their dynamic seemed to change a bit when they became teenagers. They were still thick as thieves, of course. But there was something there that wasn’t there before. He’d flirt with her and she too would do it back. And some of their touches could feel so intimate. But Ha-Yun always pushed the feelings away, not wanting to risk it. Tae Man was her anchor. God knows, what’d happen if he’s gone from her side.
So, she did what any normal best friend would do in this situation. Kicked his legs hard.
“Yah, Hwang Ha-Yun!” he shouted as he grabbed the throbbing leg.
Ha-Yun laughed and sprinted away. Not long after, Tae Man started chasing her, and off they went home after a long day at the arcade.
Their houses were right next to each other. With only a big tree separating them in the middle. So, their dads built them a treehouse connecting to their room windows. It made it 10 times easier to annoy each other. Ha-Yun would always remember how they met.
Ha-Yun moved there when she was six years old after her dad remarried. She met Tae Man while unpacking in her room. He was shouting for her from his room window across hers. When she finally opened her own, he shouted, “Hi! I’m Wang Tae Man! Who are you?”
The little girl with pigtails shouted back with waving arms. “I’m Hwang Ha-Yun!”
“That’s a pretty name! Can I call you Sunny?”
And they were inseparable ever since.
