✨SHINee for ELLE MEN / Elle Japan April issue
“We will keep on shining through the future”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photoshoot and interview in collaboration with luxury jewelry brand “Boucheron”.
(All active members’ interviews included)
-KEY-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
— Please tell us about the appeal of the Quatre Collection and your impression of the jewelry you wore.
Key: Actually, I have a Quatre ring. I wear it regularly when I go out to high-class restaurants, and I came across a Quatre while looking for a luxurious and classic ring. The bracelet I wore today was also very cute and impressive.
— What do you keep in mind while wearing a luxury jewel?
Key: It’s important to match yourself. Like today, it’s nice to have a mixed style that goes with your daily styling.
— Has the way you wear jewelry changed since your debut?
Key: What has changed is that now that I’m an adult, I can enjoy luxury brands like Boucheron! I think the one thing that hasn’t changed is that I enjoy mixing things with different tastes in my own way.
— What kind of place is Tokyo Dome for you?
Key: In the past, it used to be like an “unreachable future” for us. But thanks to our fans, the dome concerts were realized sooner than we expected. Even now, I will not forget how I felt at that moment and stand on stage again.
(Key’s comment on the jewelry)
“I also like the fact that the Quatre looks different depending on the color, such as the red one I wore today”.
- Bonus interview - (only in the website)
— How do you feel now that you have resumed group activities and completed the Japan tour with great success?
Key: Even before the end of COVID19, was always thinking than I wanted to work in Japan like I used to, and go around the country and perform live like everything is normal. Japanese fans kept asking me: “When will there be a Japan tour?” at online fansigns events, and each time I said “I want to do it too!”… But in the blink of an eye it was already over. Our long-awaited tour is reaching its final day. (laughs)
Oh, this was it after all. It’s been 5 years since the last tour and a lot has changed since then, so I was worried if they would come back (for the tour) again.
— So the Tokyo Dome performances were decided, also to eliminate these concerns
Key: I really appreciate it. I’m grateful. It’s been a long time since we’ve toured Japan, but when we did it... Nothing different from before. I think what has changed is that the members’ Japanese has become better (laughs). I’ve been performing in Japan for about 2 years, but at that time no one could scream because of the coronavirus pandemic. I was sad that there was only applauses, so I feel like I’m completely back on this tour.
— This time, the shoot was in collaboration with Boucheron jewelry. What does jewelry mean to you?
Key: In Korea, jewelry is always included on important events. When a child is born, when a couple gets married, how many days of a couple’s anniversary, etc. I have this image of jewelry being always by your side on important days.
It seems that junior groups often buy friendship items such as team jewelry with their members. I didn’t have that kind of culture at my time... Because each person has a different taste, right? But if I have a chance, I would like to try it in the future. I’d like a necklace or something that I can keep on wearing. However, it seems that it’s difficult for all the members to find something that they like (laughs).
- MINHO -
Tumblr media Tumblr media
— Please tell us about the appeal of the Quatre Collection and your impression of the jewelry you wore.
Minho: Last year, SHINee celebrated the 15th anniversary in Korea. The 20 years Quatre Collection is more senior, but I felt a sense of unity that we have experienced the same number of years.
— How do you feel when you wear a luxury jewelry?
Minho: I’ve recently started to take an interest in jewelry, so I feel good when I wear it. I’m not sure if I’ve changed because I’ve grown up (laughs). In the future, I may be more attracted to gorgeous things like the ones I wore today.
— Has the way you wear jewelry changed since your debut?
Minho: I was in high school when I made my debut, so I think there were some things that didn’t suit me at the time. But now that I’m over 30 years old, I feel like the range of items I can wear, including clothes and jewelry, has expanded.
— Please tell us how you felt about resuming group activities in Japan last year after a long time.
Minho: I realized that I missed being on stage more than I had ever imagined. Seeing everyone’s faces and hearing their voices made me feel even more grateful.
(Minho’s comment on the jewelry)
“My favorite item is the black ring. It’s good since it has a casual feel without being too assertive”.
- Bonus interview - (only in the website)
— How was the first Japan tour after a long time?
Minho: I always have fond memories of the tours. For example, there were times when it was hot and cold, and there were times when we celebrated my birthday… So, when there were no concerts, I often caught myself thinking: “Oh, normally I would be touring in Japan this time…”. So when I performed for the first time in a long time, I felt a really big sense of gratitude for the fans. I was really happy to see that the whole venue was waiting for us.
— So what do you think about finishing the tour at Tokyo Dome?
Minho: After all, no matter how many times we experience it, Tokyo Dome is a dream stage for us. I’ll always remember when we always wanted to stand there on our own and worked hard to achieve it. It’s often said that there are feelings that only those who stand on the stage of the Tokyo Dome can understand, and I think it’s true.
— On the tour, all the members talk in Japanese during MCs. How do you study Japanese?
Minho: I watch a lot of Japanese animes, movies, and dramas, and I was able to improve my listening comprehension. The audio is Japanese and subtitles are Korean. The one I watched recently was “First Love” (Netflix series).
— You are also focusing on acting. Are there any roles you would like to try in the future?
Minho: I try not to say “I want to try this genre” because I feel like that would limit the possibilities. I think that if I told people “This is what I want to do”, other works won’t come at me. I’m looking forward to playing many different roles, so please look forward to it!
- TAEMIN -
Tumblr media Tumblr media
— Please tell us about the appeal of the Quatre Collection and your impression of the jewelry you wore.
Taemin: It’s wonderful that the concept of Quatre is clearly visible in each of the items. I think it’s great that you can tell at a glance that it’s a Boucheron collection. I wanted to try them for important shoots or when wearing a suit.
— How was it to have a photoshoot wearing luxurious jewelry?
Taemin: I wanted to express the luxury and attitude of the brand in my own way, so I tried to be conscious of a cool and calm atmosphere instead of moving flashy.
— Has the way you wear jewelry changed since your debut?
Taemin: In the past, I didn’t wear jewelry at all because I felt that they didn’t look good on me, but now I enjoy wearing watches and necklaces. I feel that using them as a point, I can create a mature atmosphere.
— Please tell us how you felt about resuming group activities in Japan last year after a long time.
Taemin: It was a long awaited activity, and I want to take care of myself and run through to Tokyo Dome, the last concert of our tour. I would like to use my individual activities as a strength and do my best in group activities.
(Taemin’s comment on the jewelry)
“For stage costumes, I wear flashy accessories as much as I can, but I usually like to enjoy jewelry with basic designs in a point-like way, so I wore the same pair of earrings all the time. I don’t care about memorial days, I pick them up when I want a fashionable item.”
- Bonus interview - (only in the website)
— How was the first Japan tour after a long time?
Taemin: I was finally able to work again. I think the activities with SHINee have given me strength in my individual activities. I think we were able to work on the tour a little more relaxed than we did in the past. When I was practicing the first songs, I couldn’t remember the choreographies, so it was fun to get together with the members and remember them.
— The talk on MCs was done all in Japanese, right?
Taemin: This time, I stayed in Japan for a long time on tour, so I got used to Japanese a little... I’m still not good at it, but even for MC, I can now express myself in many ways in Japanese. I couldn’t come to Japan for a while, so I forgot about it. In the past, there should have been more words and expressions that I knew more... (laughs).
— I think Tokyo Dome is also a place of memories. Do you remember standing in the dome in the past?
Taemin: Yes, I do. When the dome was decided this time, I was reminded of the time when we had worked hard to prepare for it. Of course, the same enthusiasm from before is also felt this time, and I’m sure that the audience will come to see the dome with a special meaning. In terms of distance, it’s harder to see us in the dome than in the arena or hall. But the dome is special. After all, that scenery with the green fanlights is wonderful.
— After COVID19 ended, the life between Korea and Japan and many other countries began again. Did you discover anything new after staying in Japan for the first time in a long time?
Taemin: I feel that there are so many people who really love K-Pop. At the time of our debut, for example, we had no choice but to perform at the dome alone, but now we are in a situation where Korean awards are held at the Dome, which is a very strange feeling. I used to feel like I would come to Japan to meet my fans, but now I feel that the situation of Japanese fans who love K-Pop as a whole is different from the past. As a result, I would like to deepen my bond with the fans even more. I think we have gained so much popularity in Japan thanks to the influence of TVXQ and BoA, and I hope SHINee can contribute something to this new era.
Tumblr media
“Our activities in Japan are even more fulfilling. We will continue to be a shining group.”
SHINee is holding their first Japan tour in about 5 years, and they’re working back and forth between Korea and Japan as before. They seem to enjoy their stay in Japan in their own style.
Key: Recently, I have been making restaurant reservations myself and enjoying delicious meals with my friends in Japan. Natural wine is popular here, just like in Korea. I’ve always liked convenience stores, so I’ll go there even just by myself. I love the Napolitan (Ketchup spaghetti) from Japanese convenience stores (laughs).
Minho: I also started to go out and enjoy my meals more slowly than before. Recently, it has become popular among Koreans to enjoy sushi and tempura at “omakase” restaurants, but when it comes to yakitori (chicken skewers), Japan is the best.
Regarding the changes from the past, Taemin said: “I feel that there are so many people that fell in love with K-Pop”.
SHINee has become a role model for the 5th generation of K-pop groups.
Key: Even when I was competing in MMA and other awards, I was surprised to see my juniors cheering me on. There was a time when BoA and other seniors were there, I think that we, who followed in the footsteps, are like a bridge allowing a connection with juniors. I feel that we should all protect K-Pop and work hard together.
Taemin: Instead of just creating contents to be consumed, we have performed in Japan many times in order to be loved by our fans, we’ve been working with the goal of creating bonds.
Minho: We were able to show that we could be active for a long time, so this may have had a good influence on our juniors.
Last year, they celebrated their 15th debut anniversary in Korea. They have been collecting light while overcoming barriers, and they will surely continue to shine even more brightly in the future, working hand in hand with their fans.
Minho: We would like to continue our activities as a group and show our diverse sides. Personally, I would like to take on the challenge of a variety of works as an actor.
Taemin: We want to continue to be loved as a team called SHINee. I want each member to take care of their health, achieve their own goals and succeed. So we can do more powerful activities when we get together as a group. I feel the happiest when I’m on the stage, so I’d like to do more solo tours with new concepts.
Key: 15 years is a long time, but I still have a lot of memories, and it feels like in the blink of an eye I’m already sitting here. I will continue to take care of my health and do my best in the work. I believe that this will naturally lead me to the next great work.

✨ 181228 - Key’s interview with K-Style
Tumblr media
SHINee's Key released first solo mini album 'Hologram'
"'KEY LAND' is my country in SHINee World"
– Congratulations on the release of Japan solo debut 1st mini album! First of all, please tell us the meaning of the title and the feelings you put in the album.
Key: There were a couple of songs candidates to be the title track but "Hologram" was chosen in the moment when I listened to it and could imagine myself singing it on the stage. As the whole concept and choreography and so on immediately came to my mind, I decided to make this song the title track. As for the concept of the album I wanted to make it feel like the nostalgia of the 90's and I selected (the songs) from something other than "群青の夜 ~One of Those Nights~ (Japanese Version).
– Do you usually think of images when you listen to or choose songs?
Key: I think that songs like that (which an image comes to mind) are the good songs (laughs).
– "Hologram" has 5 songs, please tell us the story related to each song such as the contents of the lyrics and melodies, the points that you like and the memories at the time of recording.
1. Hologram:
Key: This song is a 90's old school. I think that song recalled me a nostalgic feeling at the time (of recording). It's my favorite genre of song, so it's fun to sing it. I think that everyone who listens to it will get some nostalgic memories.
2. Why Are You Here (feat. CoCo)
Key: The second song is about a broken heart. Since my image is pop, there may be people saying that they can't imagine me singing about disappointed feelings (laughs). Moreover, in a duet with a female singer, the content of the lyrics is about an encounter by chance at a party after a break up (laugh). But I would like to sing sad themed songs one more time.
3. POWER
Key: The 3rd track is a song made by TETSUYA of L'Arc~en~Ciel. When I was a junior high school student, L'Arc was very popular in Korea. It's such a famous band that everyone listened to at school, so I was very happy that I got a song from someone like him. The lyrics are very powerful, and I personally love them. I think that's a song that could be included in SHINee's album.
4. City Girl
Key: The fourth song, "City Girl," is a fresh and stylish song. But these days, we don't use the words “city girl” or “city boy” very often (laughs). That's connected to the concept of 90's. Since I had a desire to put songs of various genres in this album, wanted to include ithis song also in that meaning, and I think that it is a song that makes you feel fresh.
5. 群青の夜 ~One of Those Nights~ (Japanese Version)
Key: The fifth song, "群青の夜 ~One of Those Nights~" was also the title song of the album released in Korea, so I made it because I thought Japanese fans would like to listen to the version of the song sung with Japanese lyrics. The MV is also made in the Korean version and Japanese version.
– It seems that this MV was released a few days ago at the solo event 'KEY LAND' held in Kobe and Tokyo.
Key: That's right. But I don't think everyone watched the MV (properly) with so much MCing during it (laughs). I tried to set up such a corner with an image of everyone watching a movie together at the theater in "KEY LAND". With a style like a commentary video, I was explaining while watching the MV.
- Is there anything that makes you feel that something is different when you sing 'One of Those Nights' in Korean and Japanese versions?
Key: The singer Crush featured in the Korean version but the Japanese version is just me singing on my own. Lyrics remain the same feeling, so there is no change there. Speaking of a big change, in the title of the song, “센척안해” (“I don't wanna be strong") is the title of the Korean version, I thought it would sound weird if I literally translated it into Japanese (laughs). I wish it could be like the Korean title, but in Japanese it would be kind of... That's why it became “群青の夜” ("A deep blue night").
– I heard that the album's artwork was handled by the illustrator Chocomoo. How was it when you saw the finished design?
Key: I was very happy the moment I saw the artwork. Actually, Chocomoo is actually a friend of mine. However, it was not my request because I was a friend but a proposal from the company. Chocomoo draws illustrations using only white and black, but this time she changed the colors for my album. I was very happy that she took this big challenge as an artist. I had nothing to suggest but the color. Other than this color, there were other versions such as yellow and blue, but the album was titled 'Hologram', so I chose the hologram color.
- I heard that the first limited edition comes with a photo book celebrating your first solo work. You are famous for being fashionable, but please tell me your particular favorite outfit and preferences.
Key: I had the photo shooting at the same time when I made a Korean solo album, but I wanted to take some separate pictures that can only be seen in the Japanese album, so I prepared it specially. That's why the outfit and atmosphere are different from those in the Korean album. I think those who bought the Korean album will feel the difference. The concept of the album was "I want to show you a lot of things," so I shot it in street fashion clothes, suits, and many other outfits. I'm satisfied because I was able to take pictures outside and show many sides of myself.
- You have just released an album in Korea, and there was also a mini album release and live performance in Japan. Please tell me why you wanted to accomplish these two things in a short time.
Key: Actually, I've been talking about whether I'd like to do solo activities for a long time. But I kept thinking “Not now”. I still have a lot of work to do to have a solo activity. I'm not completely ready yet. But since the beginning of this year, I've been talking about my solo career again, and I've decided to do it at the end of the year, so I started preparing for it. If I were to release an album in Korea, I would like to release an album in Japan and have a conceet, so I prepared it at the same time.
– What was the biggest reason you thought you couldn't do solo work until this year?
Key: I was quite scared. That's why I wanted to work harder and start my solo career after getting many people to know about the name “Key” and its charms. I was afraid because I was not ready. But when I thought I was ready, my fear disappeared.
– This member of SHINee, Taemin, has just completed a long tour in Japan this year. Did Taemin encourage you to do your first solo concert in Japan this time?
Key: “‘Hologram’ is really good!” was all he said (laughs). On the other hand, I told Taemin: "I respect you!". It was my first time singing in a studio for hours to record a solo album, and then appearing on a variety show on my own... I called Taemin with a feeling of sincere respect (laughs). No, but it's amazing (that he could do all that on his own).
– And what Taemin said?
Key: He sent me some Chinese herbal medicine that would give me energy, expensive stuff! (laughs) I took it before the concert in Japan, so I got some energy.
– Did you have fun on your first solo live?
Key: Yes, I had fun. Although it's not my first time standing on the stage on my own. I also did a solo stage at SHINee's concert, so singing on my own is not a problem. But the MC part... It's a bit difficult for me to speak all on my own. You can't have a break, you must impose the atmosphere yourself. There is no one to talk to except me (laughs).
– Taemin said the same thing previously. At solo concerts there is no one else to talk, so he would rather handle the MC parts together with SHINee.
Key: Oh, really? (Our thoughts match) at this proportion... (laughs).
– The title "KEY LAND" was also very nice. What meaning did you put in it?
Key: Actually, the image of "KEY LAND" has been around since a long time ago. I don't remember clearly when it was created. Because I always think about the stage and the music, this idea was born before I knew it. The image of "KEY LAND" is like my own country in "SHINee World". Since it's a land in the world, the image is perfect.
– The items (merch) of this live performance was in a collaboration with LITTLE SUNNY BITE, and you also decided yourself what would be the items, materials and colors. What made you decide for this collaboration?
Key: It will be my first performance of "KEYLAND", so I thought it would be a cake if it were to be my birthday or an anniversary. Then, I thought LITTLE SUNNY BITE would be perfect for that image, so I took a picture of the cake and made it a motif. Also, I made a mini bag logo with the image of Halloween or Christmas party. What I think is the cutest is the mini bag. But I can't use it because I'm a man and (the bag) is pink (laughs). But I think it's the cutest.
– There's only a few days until 2018 ends. What kind of year it was for you? How do you expect the next year to be?
Key: If I could say something to myself, I would like to say "You did your best". As a SHINee member and as solo artist. The year will end soon and peacefully, and I want to continue the next year with this same spirit/energy. If in the next year I work as hard as I did this year, there's not really much to say.
– Is there anything you would like to do next year? By the way, Taemin said he wants to climb Mt. Fuji.
Key: What, just like this?! (laughs) I will be 29 years old next year. In Korean age. So, I want to taste the feeling of being close to 30 years old. I'm looking forward to becoming 30 years old. I had my debut as a teenager and have spent all my twenties with SHINee so l'm looking forward to see what kind of person I will become in my 30s.

✨ Onew’s interview for SeeK Vol.021
Tumblr media
ONEW Japan 1st Concert Tour 2022 ~Life Goes On~ Special Edition
Onew’s first Japanese solo tour. The additional performance was moved to the Yoyogi First National Gymnasium as a "Special Edition" and expanded in scale. It was “Special” for Onew and everyone for 2 days.
Along with the interview with Onew himself, Please experience that excitement here again.
— How do you feel when you look back at the “ONEW Japan 1st Concert Tour 2022 ~Life Goes On~ Special Edition”?
Onew: It was a lot of fun even though it was very hard. I created the concert myself without relying on the director, but it was very difficult. I feel like I've used all my strength, both mentally and physically (laughs). But I was really happy to be able to perform in front of everyone for the first time in a long time. I wish I could have shown everyone something more perfect, but it’s frustrating. I'm the kind of person who gets happy just by hearing the applauses from everyone. It makes em realize again “That’s why I became a singer”. It was very nice to be able to do a two-and-a-half-hour performance on my own and tell everyone everything I wanted to talk about during the MC. I really enjoyed it.
— You also went near the members of SHINee WORLD J on a cart, how did you feel at that time?
Onew: I sang a new song when I got on the cart, but I didn’t have much time to prepare, and I didn’t know what to do if I made a mistake in the lyrics (laughs). 60% of my mind was about the lyrics, 30% was thinking “I have to show a smiling face!” and 10% was like “I’m so happy to be near everyone!”, but I didn’t have enough time. But getting off the stage and going in front of everyone gave me a great sense of freedom. If I had prepared slowly, I would have enjoyed that sense of freedom more. It’s such a pity.
— How do you want to balance group activities and solo activities in the future?
Onew: As for the group activities, SHINee’s unique style of music and performance is firmly established, so I hope that we can continue to work as we have until now while agreeing well with the members. I would like to try various solo activities! I want to do what I want to do, and I also want to feedbacks on what I want to do, and I want to do everything. I’m happiest when I’m doing concerts, but I think it’s more fun to have everything from fast-paced songs to slow songs, songs that you can sing while dancing together to sad songs. That’s how I want it to be.
— After your solo tour in Japan, please tell us about your future goals as the artist Onew.
Onew: First of all, “Let's make myself happy”, that is the goal. Until recently, I used to say, “I want everyone to be the happiest”. Of course, these are the right words, but suddenly I had a question. I asked myself: “Are you happy?”. “Maybe you just want to do everything for everyone and don’t think much about what’s inside you?”. I realized that in order to make a positive impact on someone, I had to be happy first. I’m trying to put myself first and that’s what I think now. It’s okay to say: “Everyone, be happy”, but go a little further and say: “I’m going to be happy. Look at ne being happy, and I hope you will be happy too”. That’s what I want to say.

✨ Onew’s interview for SeeK Vol.021
Tumblr media
A story of Onew and fragrances
Experience making his own perfume.
So, what is the scent that Onew imagines?
The title of the concert held in March was "ONEW CONCERT "O-NEW-NOTE" in JAPAN".
Yes, Onew is very interested in "fragrances" now.
The story of Onew, who thought: "What kind of scent do I like?", how he pursued it thoroughly and found his own scent.
We will deliver it with plenty of healing effects.
ONEW
Trying to make his own perfume
He experienced making original perfumes at a popular perfume workshop.
He likes strong commitment and detailed work… Please enjoy the unknown aspects of Onew, such as his obsessions, love for detailed work and so on… to the familiar Onew (!)
Step 1: Fill in the check sheet
Check the image of the fragrance you want to create.
Before starting the perfume experience, first fill in a check sheet to confirm your favorite scent taste. Choose the scent you want to create and your favorite color from among the many options. Onew confirms one by one: “What does it mean by ‘heavy’?”, “Is it refreshing?”. He chose soft scents, heavy scents, fresh floral scents, fruity scents, woody/forest scents, and herbal scents.
When asked by the teacher about his favorite image, he said: “The phytoncide in the summer forest is ‘refreshing’, and the warm brown tone of the wood is ‘soft’. Ah, I see, so I’m ‘soft’. But I like the damp wood...”, he continued the exchange with the teacher.
The color that you can feel for each scent is also different. “I like dark tones like damp wood” - he said, checking the dark brown one. In addition, he also chose the same yellow color as today’s outfit.
Some of them smell like wood, some like herbs, and some of them feel like forest without heavy trees.
“Hmm… It’s not easy”, he suddenly was confronted with the depth of the scents.
Step 2: Trying them
Smell the 36 scents one by one
After learning about the composition of the scent of top notes, middle notes, and base notes from the teacher, it’s finally time to take the first step in creating a perfume. It’s the moment of "trying them", where you choose while smelling the scents to be blended. The impression here is important! What Onew experienced this time was a course to choose from 36 kinds of scents, and there were many perfume bottles in front of him! "I have to smell all of this, don't I? It's shocking!" - while saying that, he started immediately.
“Take a small amount with the dropper on the lid and drop a few drops, and the scent will come out. When you smell it, count 1, 2, 3” - the teacher told him the points. Then, he writes down his impressions on the sheet, whether it’s good, weird, or disliked.
It seems that his nose slowed down after 10 minutes. When that happens, smell the aroma of the coffee beans and reset. Onew posed while holding coffee beans. He asked the photographer: "How is it? Can I make an advertisement for coffee?".
He was muttering something to himself, so when I listened more carefully, he was saying: "Orchid? Child's scent?" (*or-kid) Jacket? (*leather) Oh, I like it”. He is putting some gags in between (laughs).
“I like the smell of acacia gum (acacia senegal gum), which I used to chew when I was a kid”… “Oh, it smells good”. “This is fragrant olive! I didn’t know that frangrant olive was a tree until I learned it at cram school” - he shared the episode (laughs). “The black pepper one has a pepper scent!” - Onew tries it while having fun.
While confirming the name of each scent, if he can’t understand, he will actively ask the teacher. Showing off a good student who is full of motivation. Finally, he finished smelling all 36 perfumes.
Once his nose is reset, he continues to try the scents. "Sure, I like this kind of scent." Whoa! I think he is starting to understand it!
Step 3: Perfuming
Making adjustments to the scent many times in search of the desired scent.
Onew will combine scents that he thinks are good in the scent test. Putting one drop into a tube with a dropper, dipping it on an L-shaped paper and smelling it, is like a chemistry experiment. He tells the teacher what he thinks of the scent, and adds more of the scent little by little. Changing the amounts and the fragrance is formulated again. A delicate one-on-one exchange with the teacher continues. In fact, it was difficult to achieve the ideal scent, so he had a hard time… "I’m more serious (about it) than I thought (I would be) (laughs)", he said with a wry smile.
According to the impression Onew felt, the teacher added a scent, but: "It should be a little less sweet, and the one with the scent of wood is better", "A little, not clear, subtle", "It's not the scent I expected" - Onew is not convinced. His face gradually became troubled, but after the 6th attempt, he finally smiled: "Oh, it’s similar!" and then the 7th attempt: “It's the weight I wanted”. That’s good.
For example, after the teacher puts in a little bit of fragrant olive, Onew puts in a drop of cedarwood and black musk. The trick is to drop it with so as not to touch the tube.
Even the teacher praised him!
“Onew has a pretty high ability to catch the scent. Even if you smell the same woody scent, it’s generally difficult to tell which is the lighter tone wood or which is the heavier wood. I was surprised because before, he had already correctly caught that sandalwood was lighter than cedarwood and that cedarwood should be used more as a main”.
Step 4: Put in a perfume bottle
Weigh it with a scale and pour the stock solution accurately.
Accurately pour the undiluted solution of perfume into the bottle using a scale according to the amount determined in the previous perfume blending. 0.01g determines the aroma, which is quite a delicate process. Looking at the scale, drop, drop. Concentrate and talk less, seal your favorite jokes. The silent struggle continues, but Onew said, working hard towards the imminent completion: "I want to complete my own perfume!".
Adding 5.00g of cedarwood, 2.40g of sandalwood, and 2.68 g of ambrette, that the teacher gave him when he was making the perfume. "I have to be precise!", Onew holds it tight with both hands.
Step 5: Attach the label
The scent, appearance, and name are all Onew originals!
Mix the undiluted solution from earlier with the perfume base, and finally attach a label in your favorite color to complete your original perfume! However, perfume needs a maturation period, so you can enjoy the real scent after 1~2 weeks. The teacher said: “Onew made it with very precise measurements, so it has become an ideal scent. So please, rest assured”.
Everything from the illustration on the label to the fragrance has created a one-of-a-kind perfume that is unique to Onew.
Onew chose his favorite color from the 6 different labels. “It's a little crooked because my feelings are crooked (laughs) But it looks quite good like this”, Onew said.
ONEW’S FRAGRANCE “MORI-AMA”
The sweet and soft scent turns into a dark and heavy woody scent!
A unique scent that is warm and calm, yet firm in its charm.
In order to get closer to the ideal scent that Onew had imagined, the perfume “MORI-AMA” was created by repeating the process and trying the smell over and over again.
Of course, Onew likes it, but there is also plenty of charm that goes beyond that.
This time, we asked the teacher who prepared the fragrance in detail about this perfume.
When I asked him before the class started, he said: “It would be nice if the base was woody and it had a faint floral scent”. The floral scent was made with a small amount of jasmine, which is the most similar to acacia, because he wanted the scent of acacia. In addition, among the woody scents, he liked the scent of wood, which has a “dark and deep image,” so we built the scent of cedarwood as the main scent, and added the scents of ambrette and sandalwood as decorations. However, it’s difficult to express the “warm and calm atmosphere” and “heavy atmosphere” that Onew wanted with just that scent, so it contains most cashmere scent.
The scent flow is sweet and soft at first, and rises with a calm jasmine scent. When the scent shifts from the beginning to the middle, the gentle and clean scent of sandalwood rises and the tone of the perfume is bright. The dark and dry image of cedarwood changes completely, giving you a twisted charm. During this change in scent, the ambrette enhances the woody scent and the cashmere scent is felt from start to finish, creating a warm scent.
As a perfume, it has a warm, soothing yet firm, trendy, twisted and alluring image. The cashmere scent lasts for a long time, so you can feel the soft and warm impression, and it’s a perfume with a calm image that is made by concentrating on the residual scent of woody. Among them, the dark tone of cedarwood added to the bright tone scent makes it even more attractive.
For the last few years, the Korean perfume trend has been the natural image of woody scents, or slightly unique niche scents. Onew's perfume contains these two trends.
MIDDLE Note: Jasmine
BASE Note: Ambrette
BASE Note: Sandalwood
BASE Note: Cedarwood
BASE Note: Cashmere
Thoughts after finishing the perfume making
Talking about scents with Onew
We asked him about this and that, from his impressions of perfume making to episodes about fragrances. At the end, we talked about his memories of his stay in Japan.
Onew: It’s my first time making perfume. I’m not usually that interested in perfume, I just care about the scents I can feel in my life. By the way, my favorite scent is the smell of freshly baked bread (laughs).
However, this perfume-making experience gave me the opportunity to think about what kind of scent I like. And it was a much more specialized field than I thought. I thought it would be easy to make, but I smelled one by one and compared them... My nose got tired right away, but thanks to the coffee beans that the teacher prepared for me, I was saved (laughs).
It was fun trying out the scents.
I was also surprised by the variety of woody scents. There is also such a scent. I was so into sniffing and selecting each one, and it took me a lot of time (laughs). This kind of work might suit me unexpectedly! I felt like a sommelier or barista, and it was a fresh experience.
This time, before making the perfume, I imagined a woody, slightly moist scent that felt like being in the forest. I wanted to make something with a scent of thick trees and a slightly damp earth, but I thought it might be a little heavy on its own, so I thought it might be a good idea to add a little sweet scent. But I don't know much about fragrances, so when I say sweet scent, I can only think of the smell of gum that I like (laughs). I thought the smell of “acacia senegal gum” that I used to chew a lot when I was a child was good.
Today, I made two types of scents and chose one. The first one I made wasn’t bad either, but it just didn’t click with me. It was too light and had a strong fruity scent, so I thought it wasn’t the forest scent I had imagined.
The second is a heavier scent that I like. When I want to be healed, I seek the “scent of the forest (phytoncide)”. Like when I go camping in the woods. It would be better if it rains at that time. I made it a simpler scent of forest, but I think the result is a satisfying scent. I'm simple myself, so I have to keep the scent simple (laughs). In general, it may feel heavy, but for me this is the most refreshing scent.
If I had to name this perfume... “Mori-Ama”! I just put "forest" (mori) and "sweet" (amai) together, but I think it’s a little lame (laughs). But “Mori-Ama” is good. I don't usually wear perfume.
Perfume is often remembered for its scent, isn't it? If someone remembers my perfume because it smells something they don’t like, it’s kind of sad. Also, I’d probably change my perfume depending on my mood at the time, so I think it’d better to be in a state of “nothing” rather than mixing various scents. So that you can easily put it in any scent. Maybe that's what I want to be.
I tried using essential oils and candles, but after about 5 to 10 minutes, I couldn't feel the scent anymore. I wonder if my nose is so sensitive that I get used to the scent so quickly and it becomes numb. To the extent that I even forget that I lit a candle.
By the way, the scent I don't like is the refreshing citrus scent. I recognize all of them as cucumber smells. Actually, I don’t like cucumbers (laughs). When I was a kid, I didn't even eat melons or watermelons. Come to think of it, the first time I put on perfume was my mother's perfume when I was in the first or second grade of elementary school. It was in a drawer, and when I smelled it, I really liked it. I remember asking my mother how to put it on. It smelled good, but I still remember it because there were times when I put it on too much and was like “Argh!” (laughs). If I were to create a perfume inspired by SHINee, it would be the scent of forest and acacia (laughs). It's one of my favorite scents, but since I'm part of SHINee, it would be nice to have my own scent arranged a bit. The sweetness should be modest, and it should be more refreshing. I want the bottle to be small so it's easy to carry around. A bottle like lip balms. The name would be… “OUO”. It’s a combination of the work “king” (“ou”) and the exclamation “Oh!” into alphabet!
In 2022, I stayed in Japan for three months on a solo tour, so I was able to eat what I wanted many times. What impressed me the most? It's hard to choose because they were all delicious, but I’ll go with sushi. I love chutoro (medium fatty tuna), and when I ate a course meal at a sushi restaurant, I ordered an additional item individually (laughs).
I only remember eating during the tour… (laughs) When I look at the photos I took during my three months in Japan, there are only photos of food. Especially this time, it was good that I was able to wander around by myself and suddenly enter the restaurants in front of me. I've been going around gourmet food for a long time, so I thought this shouldn't be the case, so I exercised well.
Next time I go to Japan, I want to deepen what I did this time. I used to go to the restaurants I was recommended by people and on the Internet, but this time I enjoyed walking around on my own. For example, the same tonkotsu ramen may taste different depending on the restaurant, right? It was so much fun to explore my favorite flavors like that, and I hope to deepen it next time. I guess I relieve stress by eating. I feel very happy when I am eating delicious food.
ONEW’s special message:
Once again, SHINee WORLD J
I'm planning to have a solo concert in Japan in March 2023, but by the time this SeeK arrives, it's over, so I'd like to ask everyone: "Was it a fun concert?". Whether I'm solo or in a group - working in Japan is a lot of fun and I feel very happy.
I never want to let go of this happiness.
I have a lot of songs that I want to release in Japan, and I have a lot of things I want to do, so I plan to do them all.
Everyone, please look forward to it!

✨ 160907 - Taemin’s interview with “COMO” magazine
Tumblr media
This summer, Taemin started his first solo career in Japan. He usually works with the reliable members as a member of SHINee, so he thought that his solo work would be a good thing, but he seems to be unexpectedly popular?
Taemin: No, it would be lonely. When I’m in the dressing room, I sometimes wonder “Why isn't everyone here?”. However, I want to get along with the staff around me and spend a lot of time chatting with them, so it’s ok. I think I can do it. (laughs)
The staff burst out laughing at Taemin’s words. The members aren’t here, but the bond with the staff seems to support Taemin. In fact, during the interview, the staff quickly took notes of Japanese words that Taemin couldn’t catch, and later gave feedback to him.
Taemin: I don’t have much confidence in my Japanese, but I’ll do my best to improve through my activities. Actually, even in Korea, I tend not to talk in interviews, but thanks to this activity, I have more opportunities to talk alone, and I’m able to talk more and more. If I don’t speak, no one will speak for me (laughs).
Taemin: That’s about the only thing that has changed from normal, but I don’t think there are many things that are different. Whether it’s with the members or working alone, I work hard just as much. However, I still feel the pressure of being a soloist. SHINee has 5 people, so I wondered how I could fill the same amount of energy as just 1 person. I haven’t solved it yet, but I’m looking for a way. SHINee is my greatest pride.
Taemin: When I was preparing this album (Sayonara Hitori), I didn’t have many chances to meet the members, so I didn’t receive any advice from them. But we’ve been together for about 10 years now, so I don’t think we need more words. Even if we don’t talk about it, we know each other. Each one goes their own way, and that’s fine.
This album also has the charm of a Taemin that couldn’t yet be seen in SHINee. In particular, the title track ‘Sayonara Hitori’ is a song that Taemin fell in love with when he asked for it.
Taemin: The moment I heard the melody of ‘Sayonara Hitori’, I felt like I wanted to sing that song. I liked it so much that I talked with the producer about it. The Asian style melody lines are impressive, but I’ve always wondered how I can express myself in the world.
Taemin: I think the dance also expressed the world of the lyrics well. Although it’s an intense dance, it has a choreography that delicately incorporates emotions. For example, in the case of a song like ‘Everybody’, I put more emphasis on strong dance than lyrics, but for ‘Sayonara Hitori’, there was a strong sense of swaying, and I thought it wouldn’t fit just for me. I wanted to dance while cherishing the songs. Koharu Sugawara, who choreographed this song, had the same idea as me, and she thought about how to express the world view of the song through dance, and I really liked it.
Taemin: This mini-album contains a total of 5 songs, but I’m sure that even small children will like ‘Final Dragon’. I myself was embarrassed about the first part, and I was worried whether I could do well during the recording (laughs).
Taemin: Someday, when I can do a concert on my own, I want to create a stage where I can sympathize with everyone. Where we can sing and have fun together. But when I want to concentrate and sing, I want everyone to listen carefully (laughs).
— What were you like when you were a child?
Taemin: I was the kind of kid who would go out to play and wouldn’t come home until my mom came to call me. And I was mischievous. For example, flushing the water while my brother was in the bathroom (laughs). I didn’t get yelled at so much because I was quick to escape. It was like that until I was about 7 years old. But even now, I secretly hide behind doors and surprise the members. I’ve always had good motor skills, and I was the kind of kid who could climb anywhere. Also, because of my popularity among girls... When I was walking with my mother, I was always surrounded by older girls I didn’t know. But for me, it was natural, and I never felt that I was particularly popular (laughs). I was an introvert, so I always hid behind my mom.
— What kind of dad do you think you will be in the future?
Taemin: If I had a son, I would like to be an exemplary dad who would be a good role model for him. I want to be and inspiration for them as they grow up. But rather than strictly disciplining them, I want to raise my child so that they can always feel happy. That’s why I want to leave the scolding part to the mom (laughs). What an unfair dad (laughs). If it’s a girl, I think it’s going to take more time than a son, and I think there’s a delicate side, so I’m going to be very careful. Whether it’s a boy or a girl, I want to be the kind of parent that when my kids are asked: “Do you like mom or dad the most?” they’ll answer “I like dad the most!”. Although I can’t choose between my parents, I like both of them (laughs).
— What would your ideal family be like?
Taemin: I think there will be fights sometimes, but I want to have a family where the happiness that each person envisions is pointing in one direction, and we can walk together toward happiness, and we can think of each other as our greatest ally. My family isn’t that clingy, and I started out in society early on, so it’s more like a group of people who go their own way. I also want my child to do the work they want to do. Even if they choose the same path as me, I would like to support them if they seem to become something from my point of view. I want to teach them everything I know, and I want to do my best to support them in what they want to do.
— How would you like your child to dress/look like?
Taemin: If it’s a boy, I would like him to dress neatly, someting like an English-style set-up suit. Like a British child model (laughs). Trying on jeans, sunglasses, hair styles and makeup. I’d also like to try matching outfits. If it’s a girl, I would like her to be dressed like a doll. Can I take a look at this? (He looks at the samples in a magazine carefully, but it seems that it’s difficult to find it) Would it be a bit exaggerated if it’s a dress? But I really would like to raise her with femininity. On the other hand, what if she grows up a tomboy? I think I will look back on my childhood and reflect on it. Even my parents had such a hard time raising their children (laughs).

✨ 190422 - Taemin’s interview for ‘Barks’
Tumblr media
SHINee’s Taemin will hold a nationwide tour <TAEMIN ARENA TOUR 2019> from June. Following the <TAEMIN Japan 1st TOUR~SIRIUS~> held in 2018, the second solo nationwide tour for the second year in a row will expand the scale of the venue from the previous one, starting with the Makomanai Sekisui Heim Ice Arena in Hokkaido on June 8 and ending with Marine Messe Fukuoka in Fukuoka on August 7, visiting arena venues nationwide Japan. It should show us a scaled-up stage in an arena with 14 performances in 6 locations.
His impressions of appearing in “Shabekuri 007”, the secret story of shooting the first photo book “PORTRAIT”, the artist looking back on the previous tour <TAEMIN Japan 1st TOUR~SIRIUS~> Taemin’s current location, and his premonition for the arena tour <TAEMIN ARENA TOUR 2019> I would like to introduce the interview with the photos taken carefully.
— You will be making a guest appearance on the variety show “Shabekuri 007” (Nippon TV) which will be broadcasted on April 22, but when did you decide to appear on the program first?
Taemin: I was surprised. It’s a very powerful show, and Japanese people watch it a lot, so I was excited from the moment it was decided. I was nervous the whole time during the recording, and I don’t remember much of it (laughs).
— Have you been entertained by the host, Shinya Ueda, and other comedians?
Taemin: Yes. Moreover, everyone’s speaking speed is fast! I was nervous, and it was even more difficult because I couldn’t hear some things (laughs). However, I think this "Shabekuri 007" was a huge experience for me. It was a good opportunity to show myself to people who didn’t know me yet, and I’m sure the people who have been supporting me for a long time will be happy.
— I see. So, could you give a message to those who first got to know Taemin in "Shabekuri 007"?
Taemin: (Being shy) Well, nice to meet you. My name is Taemin and I’m active in a group called SHINee. I think you saw me solo this time, but I also want to be very proud of the team SHINee. We are an energetic group with distinct personalities, so if you know me this time, please watch SHINee's performance. Thank you in advance!
— I hope more people will learn about SHINee. By the way, Taemin's 1st solo photo book "PORTRAIT", which is on sale, debuted at No. 1 in the Oricon weekly book ranking "photo books" genre. That’s great!
Taemin: First of all, there were so many people who were waiting for my photo book. I couldn't believe it, and I was happy. I'm happy to show everyone pictures of a 25 year old with a lot of energy.
— Again, what is the concept of the photo book "PORTRAIT"?
Taemin: "Taemin running away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life" (laughs). But actually, rather than "running away," I think they were able to take pictures of my relaxed facial expressions with a little free time. It was impressive to eat delicious food for the first time in Okinawa, where it was shot, and I was really into the famous Soki soba* and Agu pork**. I used to eat it every night (laughs). I also experienced scuba diving, and even though I went there for shooting, I was quite refreshed.
*Soki soba: It’s a noodle soup typical from Okinawa (It’s also known as “Okinawa soba”)
**Agu pork: Black pig from Okinawa. Its meat is one of the most popular in the region.
— I heard that Okinawa was your own choice.
Taemin: That's right. I had been there before to shoot a music video for SHINee (“Boys Meet U”), and at that time I couldn't go sightseeing due to my schedule, but the view of the sea and nature I saw while traveling were wonderful. Even before I hearing about this photo book, I often told the staff that I wanted to go to Okinawa. So this time I made the request, and I was waiting for the day of the shoot with excitement.
— It was a long-cherished wish, wasn't it? What were the most impressive locations and shooting scenes?
Taemin: The whole thing was really good, but the shots taken on the cliffs in the sea are impressive. I could enjoy the view all the way to the other side and smell the scent of the sea. I was caught by the wonderful sight, so I was not afraid at all even in a place like a precipice.
— So, what is your favorite photo?
Taemin: I would like to say "all of them," but this photo was taken in a beautiful evening. It's very memorable. It's beautiful when you look at it in the photos, but I feel that there were some things that could only be felt there, such as colors and atmosphere. When I look at that photo, I can always remember how impressed I was when I saw the sunset.
— Throughout the entire photo collection, what kind of expressions do you expect us to see?
Taemin: I was on a solo tour last year, and all I had left (to finish the tour) was the last performance in Tokyo. That's why I think there are some resolute expressions. There are a lot of smiles in the photos during the day, but sentimental emotions naturally come out at night, so I want everyone to pay attention to such changes. Now that I'm 25 years old, there were moments when I was thinking about the future directions and was a little lost in thoughts.
— To celebrate the release of the photo book, an autograph session was held at Fukuya Bookstore Shinjuku Subnade. What was the reaction of the fans?
Taemin: I received "congratulations" from most people. Because of the release of the solo photo book, the arena tour , and the appearance of "Shabekuri 007". Since many people were saying "congratulations", it felt like it was my birthday (laughs).
— Ahahahaha. It was a valuable opportunity to meet the fans who have always supported you.
Taemin: Yes. It's hard to meet or talk that closely. Some people were nervous, and some people came full of energy saying: “I'll give Taemin-kun power!" and it was an important time where everyone's emotions were conveyed directly.
— A Blu-ray & DVD containing the final performance of your first nationwide solo tour <TAEMIN Japan 1st TOUR ~SIRIUS~> last year is also on sale now. Looking back, what kind of tour was it?
Taemin: There was a lot of tension and pressure that I won't forget, but the 32 performances were a very productive time for me to grow and experience. I feel that I learned again the importance of creating a stage with the fans and staff. When I performed with SHINee, in a sense, I was committed to doing my best and keep my role going, but in my solo performances, I began to see the people who supported me closer. I also communicated with the dancers and staff in my own way, and it was a time when strong bonds were formed.
— Starting with a fantastic production of the opening, the stage with various ideas is a masterpiece. Each song was so complete and artistic, breathtaking.
Taemin: Thank you very much. Since the hall tour is close to the audience, we made it with the intention of making everyone sympathize. Then, in order to properly express the concept and world view of each song, I challenged myself to dance a wide range of dances and played the piano. At first, I was so nervous about playing the piano that my hands were shaking, but as the performances progressed, I gradually got used to it, and I was able to see everyone's faces and expressions. That process was also fun for me.
— I think many fans are looking forward to your first arena tour starting in June. How are your enthusiasm for the second consecutive nationwide tour?
Taemin: I'm really grateful. Right now, while the other members of SHINee are a little bit away, I want to work hard and grow, so that I can “explode” even more when I get together with SHINee again. While each member is experiencing new things, I want to do what I can now and grow.
— It may be a little early, but have you decided on the contents of the arena tour?
Taemin: No, nothing has been decided yet (laughs). However, I hope everyone can enjoy Taemin, which can only be seen one day at a time (during the tour). At first, I might be nervous, but then I will gradually relax, make a little mistake and show an expression that tells that I’m in trouble... (laughs) That's the real thrill of live performances, and I hope it will be a special performance for everyone rather than doing it perfectly from start to finish. As an overall highlight, I would like to show you my new image as I have grown through the hall tour. Musically, I want to try a style that I've never done before, and I'm actually looking for that kind of music right now.
— Do you have any image of the stage set and outfits from now on?
Taemin: Yes. But somehow, I want to make the stage flashy and glamorous. I think the hall tour was a rather flashy performance, but it was a strong atmosphere that took it to the next level. It's more like an adult than a boyish image. Please look forward to it. I will deliver a wonderful stage!

✨230309 - What is the keyword of Onew’s 1st full album ‘Circle’? Onew reveals plans for group activities
Tumblr media
SHINee’s Onew made a comeback with a solo album.
Onew’s first full album "Circle", which was released on March 6, consists of a total of 10 songs, expressing a variety of life moments that everyone can relate to, such as love and break up, expectations and disappointments, growth and anxiety, etc. with Onew’s voice alone. The following are questions and answers about Onew’s first fullalbum "Circle".
— Please tell us your impressions of the release of your first fullalbum "Circle".
Onew: It's an album that I carefully worked on with many staff members, and I'm really happy that people are finally able to listen to it. I'm looking forward to promoting the album and seeing what happens.
— Prior to the release of the album, you also held a first solo concert, but please tell us if there were any parts that you paid special attention to in preparation.
Onew: I thought that the culture of performing should be something that everyone can enjoy without missing anything. In particular, I wanted to prepare a performance that the audience and I would create together, and that would leave a lasting impression for a long time. I paid attention to the set list and tried to create scents that matched it.
— How would you describe this album with one keyword? Can you tell us why?
Onew: Healing, recovery, circulation? When I think about it, there are a lot of keywords (laughs). I created it with the conviction that no matter what happens, good moments will come back. Also, since it was my first full-length album, I tried a lot of different things to get people to listen to the good songs. I think the album is more like "I've always liked songs like this" rather than being like "I can do this".
— What are the highlights of the title track "O (Circle)"?
Onew: All the elements representing the title track "O (Circle)" are in good harmony. I worked hard to prepare the lyrics, singing style, choreography, images, etc., so that people would think of each of them as one feeling, rather than being different.
— How was the first time you heard the title track "O (Circle)"? Why did you decide on the title track?
Onew: I thought "Wow, that's great, I think I should do this". However, my first time listening to the song was before the release of ‘DICE’ album, so the timing didn’t match. It was a song that I was definitely going to do next, but this time everyone will listen to it.
— You have prepared many contents related to the album, such as preview images, mood samplers, music video, etc. Please tell us if there are any memorable episodes from the time of shooting.
Onew: There were many cold days when we were shooting, but the staff around me put in a lot of effort. Everyone worked hard until dawn and gave me energy. Thanks to them, I was able to shoot with a bright smile. I want to transmit my gratitude again.
— What is your favorite song on the album, except for the title track?
Onew: I guess it would be "Expectations"? It took the longest time, but this time I can't choose one of them (laughs).
— How do you want this album to be evaluated?
Onew: I would like to be told that “the album Onew puts out are worth listening to at least once”.
— How do you feel about SHINee's 15th anniversary this year? What if you could give a spoiler about SHINee's comeback?
Onew: Time flies really fast. I remember every moment about SHINee. They say that everything changes in 10 years, but in 15 years, it’s about half the time, but I feel like I’m always in the same place. I’m always grateful. And to give a spoiler, hm... "Concert"?
— Please give a message to the fans who always support you.
Onew: Thank you for always waiting. I think it’s more accurate to say that we are walking together than waiting, but we will continue to work hard and happily so that SHINee and Onew will always be somewhere in the hearts of our fans!

✨ 160229 - SHINee’s interview for ‘AERA’ Magazine
Tumblr media
The group name is said to be a coined word with the meaning of “a person who bathes in shining light”. It’s been five years since their debut in Japan. In fact, they are beginning to shine in the light.
In January, the 4th album “DxDxD” was released in Japan. The nationwide tour “SHINee WORLD 2016 ~DxDxD~” had also started.
— Please tell us about your enthusiasm for the tour.
Minho: We had to show everyone a new side of us. We were determined to do so. When I first stood at the Tokyo Dome stage in 2015, I was very moved. This time too, the first Kyocera Dome and the second Tokyo Dome performances are scheduled for the end of the arena tour. We’d like to express our appreciation to many fans.
Key: We’ve been longing for dome concerts since our debut. They’re special, after all.
Jonghyun: I’m thankful from the bottom of my heart for being able to sing in such a big place.
Onew: That’s why we have to show our cool side! (laughs)
Taemin: I’m having the most fun when I’m having a concert. That’s why I’m so happy to be able to travel all over Japan again.
— At the concerts, you sang a lot of songs from the album “DxDxD” that was just released in January, right?
Key: When I was recording them, I wanted to sing them on stage as soon as possible. When I first listened to ‘WANTED’, I thought “This absolutely have to be a rock music”.
Jonghyun: “Moon Drop” is a nice one to listen to while driving with your girlfriend.
All: Ohh!
Minho: “DxDxD” is for when you want to feel excited.
Taemin: “Boys Will Be Boys” for when you want to feel rejuvenated.
Onew: “LOVE” is nice for when you take a walk in the woods.
Key: Umm, do you ever go to the woods? (laughs)
SHINee said it’s been a long time since they had an interview with a magazine in Japan. When they start talking, they react to each other’s words one after another, and at the end it always turn into laughter.
This interview took place the day after the two-day live at Marine Messe Fukuoka, which marked the beginning of the tour.
— When you debuted in Korea, you were all teenagers. Has anything changed since you reached your 20s?
Minho: Even if you watch the same movie, you feel differently in your teens and 20s. In the same way, when I sing a song I recorded before, I feel that my impression is different and that it has changed.
Jonghyun: Age doesn’t matter to me. I don’t really like being influenced by numbers. I want to cherish my emotions.
Key: I have come to understand Onew’s (who is 1 year older) feelings. After the concert, my body felt heavy. I heard that Onew felt like this.
Onew: It will get more and more painful~ (laughs)
Taemin: We are mentally young (laughs).
Key: But all 5 of us have been active for several years, people don’t change so easily!
Onew: Not so much.
Key: I longed to become an adult when I reached my 20s. But I haven’t changed much. I think we can just stay like this. The 5 of us will continue to do our best.
— What are your future goals?
Taemin: I’m planning my solo activities, so I want to show my different self from SHINee. I want to create a new feeling to both music and dance.
Key: Now that my dream of performing at the dome has come true, I want to improve my singing and dancing skills and meet everyone (at concerts).
Jonghyun: I think the same goes for me. To stay healthy and keep up the good work so as not to get injured. I want to keep this current state.
Onew: That’s a good thing. It’s important.
Minho: I feel the same way. I’m so loved by everyone, so I’ll work so hard to the point my body will break down.
Jonghyun: I just said “not to get injured” though…
Minho: So until just before my body breaks down. I will do my best until just before that!
Onew: And I want to tell more and more funny jokes! (laughs)

✨ 190327 - Taemin’s interview for his photo collection 「PORTRAIT」
Tumblr media
In November 2018, Taemin had landed on the mainland of Okinawa, which was blessed with a good weather. During the first national solo tour TAEMIN Japan 1st TOUR ~SIRIUS~ which gathered approximately 100,000 people, he got out of his everyday life for a while, about 2 days in Okinawa for a shooting. 10 years after his debut, what kind of “portrait” the 25-years-old artist who gets busy with activities as SHINee (member) and solo Taemin would like to leave? We talked to Taemin, who came back to Tokyo after finishing his performance ‘SMTOWN SPECIAL STAGE in SANTIAGO’ held in Chile, South America.
- You’re spending intense days, aren’t you? I heard that you just returned from Chile today.
Taemin: That’s right. The travel time is long, also waited for about 8 hours for a stopover in Los Angeles... And since there was 12 hour time difference, I'm a little sleepy now. (laughs)
- For today's interview for the photo book, do you remember something about the shooting time?
Taemin: (*Looking at the photos*) This shooting is... (I guess it's) from half a year ago.
- It's from only 2 months ago.
Taemin: What? Only two months have passed. I'm surprised. Is it jet lag? (laughs) I feel nostalgic, Okinawa.
- Then let's hear the story while remembering (laughs). First of all, tell us why you chose the offshore location.
Taemin: I didn't know much about Okinawa, I had this image of "a place where your mind can relax". So when the staff told about the location, I decided that I absolutely wanted to go to Okinawa. If you actually go, it's the best comfort beyond imagination. The sunshine unique to Okinawa remains in the impression.
- How many times have you been to Okinawa?
Taemin: This is my 2nd time. It's been since the MV shooting of SHINee's 8th single "Boys Meet U" (2013). The air I felt at the time of shooting was left in the impression, the feeling of being a nice place, I thought that maybe I could express my present form more straightly. Actually I was able to shoot with a very good tension (relaxed).
- I heard that there was 1 day off before shooting.
Taemin: That's right. During the tour "SIRIUS", I flew to Okinawa right after the performance... The next day I slept until noon, I did scuba diving, I went to Churaumi Aquarium despite being last minute before it was closed. I also ate Agu Pork steak at night. The Agu Pork was really delicious so I also ate an Agu Pork shabu-shabu* for a night meal in the location (laughs).
* Shabu-shabu is a Japanese hot pot dish with thin sliced beef or, in this case, pork meat.
– You really enjoyed it (laughs). Did you actually want to dive?
Taemin: I actually don't like to set up plans, I'm not good at it. Even if I make plans, since I often chance my mind during the day, all in the heat of the moment, I'm the type who decides as an improvisation. So I went to Okinawa without making a schedule this time. I got up in the morning, took a quick look at a pamphlet to see what I could do, and (decided that) this was it! And an Agu Pork restaurant, here too! (laughs). The restaurant that I happened to find by chance seemed delicious, so I entered it intuitively. It was all right. Fun and delicious, it was a great day. I did dive in Bali before but the sea in Okinawa was more beautiful.
– The sea of Okinawa seems to be popular among divers in the the world. You like it (the sea), right?
Taemin: Since I go to many places with SHINee or solo, it wasn't a long time since last saw the sea, I could see the sea from the balcony in the hotel room this time and it was really beautiful, I could see the emerald green sea in the morning. I think it's important to take a time to look at such sceneries. Feeling refreshed, I think I can organize my mind and my heart.
- Where was the most memorable place for shooting?
Taemin: The place of the first page of the photo book. Huh, it was a little above a cliff. It looks like l'm going to fall if I slide my leg. And it's impressive because it started from the location on that sea scene. The morning light is beautiful, I think it's a good photo (laughs).
- If there was a Japanese word you didn't know that appeared during the shooting, it was impressive how you would always confirm the meaning and pronunciation with the staff.
Taemin: Really? Actually, even if I hear words that I usually don't know, I spend some time pretending that I know (laughs). Then I try to confirm later by asking "What did you say earlier?" (laughs).
- It's great if you can confirm later. Is that how Taemin improves in Japanese?
Taemin: When I'm in Japan, I'm always being careful when picking all the words (I say) as much as possible. But I think, I'm still 30~40 points on my level (in Japanese). I haven't made any effort at all... (*wry smile*) I don't have enough time to read books and study at the desk. For when the tour is over and I go back to Korea, I made these 3 promises to a Japanese staff: "I'll study Japanese", "I'll have voical trainings", "I'll practice piano". I didn't do anything yet (laughs). I'm sorry. I'm thinking of starting with buying a piano first (laughs).
- A piano that you can carry around?
Taemin: No, it's... I don't have to practice to the point of carrying it around, right? (*Looks scarily at the staff*) That's a little too hard... (laughs).
- In this photo book, you have been dressed in many outfits in each scene, do you have a particular interest in clothes?
Taemin: My knowledge about fashion is poor and l'm not confident, so at each place, after understanding what was required, I would convey my opinion firmly to the stylist. (I would) Take a look at places and clothes and from this, create a view of the world inside my mind and changing the clothes. This time too, as I often changed clothes after arriving at each shooting location, (I would) look at the place first and decide the outfit after thinking about the colors and atmosphere that fit there. Also, not increasing the number of similar costumes in the whole book, even in performances, even on TV, I think that I always stick with it. (*Turning over the pages of the photo book*) Wow, maybe l'm a genius. It went quite well. There are many outfits (laughs).
- How does it feel like to see your own photos like this?
Taemin: To be honest, it's still embarrassing. It's also different from looking at a mirror at home or in the hotel.
– Over 10 years have passed after your debut. You've done countless shots already, right?
Taemin: When shooting, I don't think of anything because I'm concentrated and working hard, if you look at it when it becomes raw, I think it's cool (laughs). That is expression and it's my job.
– Comparing to the photos of when you were a teenager, how do you see yourself now? (Do you think) Maybe your face has changed, or something like that?
Taemin: Something like this, l'm worried that the wrinkles in my eyes have increased. The resilience (of my skin) seems to have disappeared (laughs). Maybe I ate a little too much delicious foods while on tour. My face is slightly round in this photo collection. It's reflection.
– What is your first memory from birth?
Taemin: Everyone may think that this is absolutely a lie but I have a memory of when I was 1 year old. My parents moved home when I was 1 year old, (I have) the memory of the house before moving. There was a slide there, I still have this image, probably seen while being held by my mother.
– What kind of child were you?
Taemin: I was a child who never cried at all. And (I was) shy and introverted, I liked to always hide behind my mother, I felt safe there.
– When going out, you liked to grab on her skirt to walk?
Taemin: That's right, exactly. I really didn't like to have other people seeing me.
– Why is that?
Taemin: (laughs) Maybe it was a bit of pride, I was pretty cute when I was a kid (laughs). I was a child that was getting bored to people around me looking at me and saying "Oh, what a cute boy" (laughs). I think it would have been nice to remain at that time.
– (laughs) As an introverted, you were indoors? Like playing in your room?
Taemin: When I became an elementary school student, I started to go out to the park to play but rather than meeting up with my friends, I was asked by the children in the place (to play with them). Hide and seek, soccer... I liked moving my body and by going to the park I was able to join nature and the children who were there. It may have changed socially little by little.
– What are the memories that you have of your parents?
Taemin: (*Thinking for a while*) I think it was a very ordinary family. No episodes come out at all.
– Isn't there a memory of anger?
Taemin: Usual things, like having a fight with my brother, lying, in moments like these there was a moment of anger, but... I was the type to run away when someone was angry, my brother was the type to apologize. That's it. But I think no matter what I've done, I grew up really loved.
- With no big incidents, everyone is loved.
Taemin: Ah, there is this case that my mother still talks about. It was about when I was in kindergarten. Because I was introverted, I didn't like kindergarten very much. One day, as usual, I left the house saying "I'm going~", but instead I went to a nearby park alone without going to the kindergarten. When I was hungry, I ate the lunch and played a little until I thought it was almost time for kindergarten to be over and I went home. Since I didn't go to the kindergarten, they contacted (my parents) and asked: "Is Taemin absent?". I suppose I left everyone worried because I became a kindergarten child missing. But came back home with the feeling that it was noon already but apparently it hasn't been an hour since I left home (laughs). But because of that, I was able to quit kindergarten (laughs).
– You have very understanding parents.
Taemin: Even from such a small age, (they) already had that much respect for me. My mother is a very emotional person, I remember that I was treated with much love.
- Are you good friends with your father?
Taemin: We are good friends. We don't talk so much but I understand that he is always cheering (on me). I'm grateful. But after my 20 years old, I barely have time to be with my parents.
– Being part of such a normal family, how did you get into singing and dancing?
Taemin: When I was around 8 years old. I watched Michael Jackson's performance on internet, that was the first shock I received. Maybe it was too early... Precocious. Then I would hide in the house, watch it repeatedly and try to imitate the dance. I did my best and danced. Then, some people around me recommended me: "If you like dancing so much, there is an audition for SM ENTERTAINMENT". So I was able to get into SM. It's hard and fun to practice with friends who have the same dream, it was a good experience.
– When you started to dance, did you approach the artists you dreamed of when you were 8 years old?
Taemin: Not yet, but I think I could get close to it. I was actually a great fan of Michael Jackson at that time, I dreamed of (being) a solo singer. Even when I was an SM trainee I worked hard aiming to become a solo artist. The chance came up quickly, I made my debut with SHINee and furthermore, I also had the opportunity of solo debut earlier than I thought, I think I'm happy.
– While working with SHINee, did you have any aspirations as the solo artist Taemin?
Taemin: Yes I had. The images of my childhood are very strong and remain in my head but now I can do both SHINee's activities and solo activities, very rewarding, I think I have a good balance in myself. More than trying the solo more strongly, I understand the greatness of a stage that shows teamwork in a group. After all, the fact that the other members always come together may make me feel stronger. I think that previously I was greedy or still too young. During SHINee's activities, there were moments when I was quite individual. Prioritizing myself when I should work for SHINee. It might have been annoying to the members too.
– How did you feel when you were on a solo performance?
Taemin: Of course there was pressure to go up to the stage on my own, it would be always like this but, of course, I could feel the team work of the members. When I don't know (how to do something), I can leave it for the others (to do it). When I am as a solo singer, I have to communicate with staff and fans a lot. But of course, since I was introverted, I wasn't good at speaking properly. I think now I can do something about it.
– Did you keep in touch with the members while on a solo tour?
Taemin: Yes. Ah, but... The members contacted me first. They would support me by saying things like "congratulations" or "good luck". Of course, because I'm the younger (laughs). Everyone is worried and will take care of me.
– It's your image of "cute maknae" but there is no such thing in fact! What do you think about this?
Taemin: No... I think that is probably my honest appearance. I don't dislike it. Maknae... (laughs). I overdo it and put it cool, I don't do anything to deceive my appearance. If you can see that, you will understand that.
– Then, even for such a young boy like Taemin, there is actually a place for a manly person. What do you do if there is something to appeal?
Taemin: I don't want to do much appealing things... (laughs) I think masculinity is kindness. I want to be kind to everyone and I want to be able to smile.
- When there are painful things or sad things, how do you deal with them?
Taemin: I most often meet and chat with my friends. Drink some alcohol. I talk to my friends about a good subject. But I have to be with someone. If l'm with my friends, I don't worry about my problems at that moment. I can forget it. I try to prevent myself from feeling depressed. Then, if time passes, the troubles will be solved well before they happen.
– When you analyze yourself, what kind of person is Taemin? Optimistic or pessimistic?
Taemin: This question is asked often but it's really difficult to answer no matter when you ask. People, of course myself included, don't always have the same form and mind. Sometimes l'm noisy and sometimes l'm quiet, sometimes I smile or have a sad and painful face. Same as everyone, I'm a man who has all kinds of emotions. It's difficult to express (with words) this kind of personality.
- Do you like yourself?
Taemin: Sometimes I might dislike myself. Same as the previous answer, my mind is always moving like a pendulum. But I think it's not good to dislike yourself, so I try to imagine that I like myself. If you dislike yourself, you will lose your confidence, this is the worst. If I lose my confidence, I will have a negative impact on my surroundings. Members, staff and my family. And even all the fans. No one wants to see a performance without confidence, so I try to control myself in order to get better quickly.
– This is great. It seemed like the strength was visible beyond the amazing smile of Taemin. Is that what you have been trying since then?
Taemin: I feel that I didn't have such capacity or strength in the past. Maybe it could be the place where I grew up most since I had my debut. It's all about experience. I think you shouln't waste a failed experience as you head in a better direction. I would work while I was nervous, but now I have come to think that it may be possible to work while enjoying more. Failures, bad things, I will try to experience anything. (laughs) I think that's important.
– Now, it's said that it's a time for a big change, how do you see yourself many years ahead from now?
Taemin: How is it... I have 2 images. In one I'm married and in the other one l'm alone without getting married.
– These 2?! I guess usually there's only one of them. How old is this Taemin?
Taemin: Around 50 years old (laughs).
- Would you like to get married?
Taemin: I don't think about this at all for now. There is a mountain of things for me to do now. I'm 25 years old. To be honest, I feel that marriage doesn't suit me. Will I be able to live the same life forever? I'm sure I will seek for change. Changes, freedom.
- What is the image of Taemin's future as an artist?
Taemin: I think I will be able to dance the same way up to the age of 35... But after that, I don't know. It will be difficult to dance just as it is now. I think I'll grow and prepare for that time. However, it's important to think about the future, but I cherish the things one by one in front of me now.
– Can the fans expect more from this Taemin coming?
Taemin: (*Grinning*) Yes. I think maybe it's good. I always think about showing a new side of myself, the staff around me also cooperates on it, so I think that it will surely be delighted by all the fans. If they can't... well, it's inevitable. (laughs)
– (laughs) But are you confident?
Taemin: Yes, l'm confident!
– Well then l'll wait to see the "new Taemin" next time.
Taemin: Thank you very much. Please come and see the "new Taemin" by all means!
