Daiya no Ace Act II Chapter 117: This is Where He Stands
Tumblr media
It’s fitting that the first-year catchers have the cover page, as they are currently the only catchers available to lead Seidou to victory for their practice match. They are also going to play an important role in the new team without Miyuki. They have huge burden on their shoulders, and their mettle is tested with the absence of the senior catchers in such important game.
Tumblr media
Furuya’s still on a roll, and yet Ochiai doesn’t lose his critical look from the end of last chapter. His words ‘that’s it for him, I suppose’ rings ominous as we are given insight what he’s thinking.
Tumblr media
…and it’s not pleasant, nor flattering for Furuya. I’ve quoted his words verbatim below:
…not bad for the first pitch, except since the previous inning he never once managed to locate any of his breaking balls in the zone. If we talk about Furuya’s strongest weapon, it has to be his fastball. Control, stamina… even breaking balls, all of those are only tools to make the best use of his fastball… By throwing mostly strikes, he can make the batters start swinging even at balls. When he hits his stride, he’s peerless. A true monster. But… if he slips up even a little… and his pitching starts coming undone… he becomes so terribly fragile.
it doesn’t help that with each word, Furuya proves his point on the field. Ochiai doesn’t end there too
Tumblr media
A headstrong personality perfect for a pitcher. Great physique that allows him to throw fastballs of fire. He may be a pitcher of great promise and imm[e]asurable potential. But at the moment, this is where Furuya Satoru stands.
It’s such a cold and blunt assessment, which reminds me why I really, really hated this guy when he made his first appearance. Not to mention the way he dismissed Eijun and almost led him to ruin. However, now I get to understand him better, and is in better mindset to put myself in his position, he… was not wrong not then, and not now. Ochiai was a newly brought in coach, he didn’t see the growth of each player, so he had no frame of reference of everyone’s potential, only what he currently saw, and Eijun… was totally in bad condition. And Furuya was on the rise. This time, Ochiai is in position to see everyone’s growth better and he has learned how to be better coach from Kataoka. But Ochiai was, and is a realist, first and foremost. He sees potential yes, but it is strongly based on the present. Back then, Furuya’s potential was backed up with his performance so he looked like on Furuya’s corner (his treatment of eijun was still awful tho, not forgiving him for that). But now, we see that he’s not in anyone’s corner. From his thoughts, it looks like he’s more on the corner of the pitcher who is more reliable and consistent, which Furuya is currently neither. Interestingly, his words bring focus on Eijun, then the rest of the pitchers.
Tumblr media
After letting a walk on balls, Furuya allows a hit on the first pitch, ending his last inning not as nicely and cleanly as his wish as Coach Kataoka switches him out with one out left.
Tumblr media
Coach Kataoka might come to the same conclusion with Ochiai, seeing how he is not surprised at the decision to avoid Furuya from self-destructing. However, Kataoka, unlike Ochiai is more an optimist. He’s the one who keeps giving second chances to pitchers… but with the looming deadline of finalizing Summer roster… I don’t think Kataoka can afford to take a gamble, especially now he has no shortage of capable pitchers to pick from, unlike last year.
What particularly strikes me from Ochiai’s running commentary is that Furuya should have just focused on his fastball and one breaking ball. That narrower focus I feel like would work better for Furuya. The moment Furuya starts to think more, just like in this game, when he keeps thinking, ‘I can still throw, I can keep going’, putting more pressure on himself, he… breaks down. His focus doesn’t hold anymore. Fragile is an apt description of Furuya. Take away his fastball, take away his fangs. Furuya has lost what makes him the ace. The more I think, the more I feel like the rivalry he has with Eijun begins to affect Furuya negatively. Because Furuya naturally wants to keep up with Eijun, who–by virtue of his pitches and pitching style–is required to think more and to be more precise in his control… he attempts those things along with Eijun, which neither are particularly needed by Furuya if we go with what Ochiai said. I wonder whether the coaches and the catchers should tailor their approach to these two and keep them apart in order for Furuya in particular to find his own way of doing things, because all we can see he’s repeating what he’s been doing and so far?  It’s not working.
Arrrrggggh, I know I sound harsh, but the thing is I like Furuya and I cannot see a way out for him with the way things going right now, and it’ll be unfair for him to keep his spot with so many others proving their worth unfailingly. The next pages truly remind me how intense the competition to get to the Summer roster is.
Tumblr media
Okumura and Kaneda are brought in. Yui is moved to Left field, replacing Yuuki who is out of the game. Okumura who is new to the first string already has his chance to play. Kaneda whom we only get to know after the Fall tournament arc and overshadowed by the rest of the pitchers that he didn’t get to play in official or practice matches now is given the chance. Masashi who has his chance to prove himself cut short because Yui is considered more valuable and he’s the most expendable player on the field by the coach but not seen the same way by both first years from the terse exchange. The thing is Masashi is not his brother, not yet. He shows promise in offense, but not in defense. Yui, has shown promise in both, and most of all he is a catcher, when they are short of catcher. And right now, the one’s playing is the least experienced catcher in the roster: Okumura. Yui has to be available if things go south. Honestly, I’d hope not, for everyone’s sake, though Yui probably will still blame himself. Honestly, Yui just has the worst luck in dealing with unstable Furuya, if it’s Kaneda, I’m pretty sure he’ll be fine.
And whoa, that’s the longest analysis for Daiya to date! (i think? i feel like my analysis for daiya is getting shorter)
But damn things are sure heating up in Seidou *fans self*…. Ono, just be alright. Kataoka might just pull a Tanba for you. *prayer hands emoji*

Daiya no Ace Act II Chapter 115: Gotta Win
We’re back to Seidou this chapter and they are…
Tumblr media
…in quite a predicament. I cannot help wincing at the list of things going wrong after the first error we’ve seen last.
Tumblr media
O.M.G. I’m not seeing things am I???? Eijun being serious and authoritative??? And Okumura agreeing????
Okumura has strong dislike (distrust might be the better word) towards authority figures, and yet he doesn’t argue at all at what is definitely not a suggestion from Eijun, which shows how much respect he has for Eijun.
Eijun looks more and more like an Ace. Please Terajima, end us of our suffering and just make him the Ace already! Stop dangling the possibility in front of us if only to snatch it away! (and i start wondering why i keep up reading anyway)
Tumblr media
Yui… he puts too much pressure on himself. Honestly, everyone is as if not more aware than he is that he is still a first year. No one is asking for a miracle. Those two lost runs are not his fault, but the team’s. I hope this experience won’t be a discouraging experience for him. (…which can be worse if somehow okumura is played and he performs better… damn)
But look! Not all hope is lost!
Tumblr media
IT’S CHEETAH-SAMA!!
Tumblr media
HARUICHI!! And just like that they get back one run! Wait!
Tumblr media
SHIRASU!!! Making it three hits in a row! Oh man, Seidou’s batters’ are on fire! And they are not done yet!
Tumblr media
Here comes MAEZONO!! The vice captain and cleanup to the rescue! Show your guts Zono!
However, the highlight of this chapter and this match is none other than our sunshine boy, Eijun with his scarily accurate and highly entertaining commentaries.
Tumblr media
Oh Eijun… Always a mood-maker, even at the sidelines. (haruichi shows more of his kominato genes lately or it’s just the lack of bangs finally reveals how evil he actually is lol)
Seriously, Terajima, stop teasing us with Ace Eijun!!! T_T
Tumblr media
I cackled out loud at the last one. Omigosh, the ACCURACY, the accuracy hurts. Oh Eijun, how I love you so.

Daiya no Ace Act II Chapter 110: As a Catcher
Tumblr media
We’ve got another wonderful roommates relationship besides Room 5. I wonder what their room number if only to give them a nickname. I’m so happy that Furuya looks so comfortable and at ease around them. That boy needs more friends.
Tumblr media
Ono really shines in this chapter. His leads manage to bring out the best in Furuya, taking out the opponent by surprise who thinks that Furuya is only a power pitcher.
Tumblr media
He finally gets the acknowledgment he deserves. Oh my boy T^T
Tumblr media
Right when Ochiai doubts Furuya’s ability to trust another catcher besides Miyuki, Furuya proves him wrong. He’s leaving the runner to Ono and focusing on the batter as Ono asks him to. The flashback makes me sad, because it drives home how rarely, if ever, he is allowed to pitch to his satisfaction. Miyuki is the first, and for a long time, he is the only one, no wonder he latches on to Miyuki so vigorously. Ono says just the right thing, the very words Furuya needs to hear from his catcher, and more importantly, he has action backing his words.
Tumblr media
Ono gives him reason for Furuya to believe his words. Coming from another catcher, they might hold less weight. Furuya has seen his determination, his readiness to support him. Ono has come a long way. I hope he can say with pride that he’s a better catcher. (it’s also interesting to know what happened in the meiji jingu and that my speculation is pretty close, and yui’s admiration for ono is adorable?? they’re so precious)
Tumblr media
seriously?
SERIOUSLY?
SERIOUSLY??!!
WTF, TERAJIMA!!!
I’m so spittin’ mad and disappointed, because that’s definitely an injury right there. again. not another catcher. WTF, what does Terajima have against the catchers? Chris, Miyuki, Inui and now Ono? Right when I’m so proud and happy to see him have his chance to shine???
Since Act II started, I’ve got the impression that the story gets more dramatic thanks to unnecessary or unreasonable plot point. Some can be easily overlooked because a whole lot of testosterone in one place is bound to make things rather tense and competitive, if not complicated, but seriously? Injury might be part of athlete’s life but the timing makes it less realistic and more dramatic, and if anything, gives a sign of weak writing as though there’s nothing else to force character or plot development than injury. It becomes a stale plot device, having being used so often and closely, reducing the impact if it’s meant to be an impact.
With this injury, Ono loses his chance to shine, to prove himself that he’s a capable catcher of his own worth. Furuya, the sensitive boy he is, cannot be not affected by the injury, especially when he’s starting to learn to count on another catcher besides Miyuki. It can be a major step back for both Ono and Furuya, for what? I usually have faith in Terajima, but… lately I’m not holding my breath.
I feel like he’s digging his own grave, and it doesn’t look like he knows how he’s getting out of it. Great. *sarcasm*
So to end this analysis on a lighter tone, let’s have cheerleader Eijun!
Tumblr media
Oh Eijun. Never change. Seto is certainly entertained by his senpai’s antics while Okumura’s just not impressedTM.

Daiya no Ace Act II Chapter 83: Bloom of Youth
So here it comes, another practice match, Seidou (Tokyou) vs Naruta Tech (Chiba).
The opening page though, it’s such a familiar scene. You can guess who’s the other figure running separate from the others. How the roles have changed.
Tumblr media
Y’know the moment I read where Seidou’s opponent for the practice match is from. I was like, wait, Chiba? Isn’t that where Kuramochi comes from?
Bingo.
Tumblr media
IT IS!! (my memory doesn’t fail me, yay!)
Tumblr media
Looking at them, I’ve got the impression that Kuramochi will fit in just fine. They all look like delinquents, even the head coach. Is it something in the water? XDDD
Tumblr media
The lineup for this practice match is worth noting. The first to sixth batter is the same from Hakuryuu’s lineup. So it’s safe to say that the players and the positions they hold are locked down, leaving heated competition for those seeking starting Left Fielder and Third Baseman positions with the contenders Asou, Yuuki and Furuya; and Higasa, Kanemaru and Takatsu for each. It’s not just Ace position which competition is fierce.
It looks like this chapter’s analysis is gonna be long and spoilery so…

Daiya no Ace Act II Chapter 78: The Note
Whoa, this chapter is such a goldmine for analysis. I take great care and pleasure looking at every single panel. It’s very revealing and enlightening.
While the cover is good (Kawakami is in it!), admittedly the chapter title is better.
Tumblr media
Two of our best first year pitchers, with determined look on their faces and ominous accompanying words. We’re counting down the days, everyone! For better or worse.
Now, let’s start analyzing. *cracks fingers*
Seidou players in class.
Tumblr media
Second years: Toujou, Haruichi and Kariba are in the same class, and they seem like the chillest group of second years. Eijun has his own groupie *snorts*. Fortunately good and sane kind, which also happens to be Haruno’s closest friends in class (and Eijun’s shoujou manga fellow readers). Kanemaru is jealous. (Is it just me or Kanemaru and Haruno have potential together?) …Furuya is alone, despite being in class with three others… ●︿●
Tumblr media
Third years: Kawakami is alone (but not lonely?). Shirasu is in the same class with Yui and Sachiko. Ono and Seki are in the same class with Maezono who are fighting with Asou… when the usual suspects, are surprisingly, is grinning at each other in amiable exchange. OMG, look how genuine the look on their faces.
The ship has sailed for Kuramiyu~! (whatever ship you choose, platonic, queerplatonic, romantic, the potential is right. there) O(≧▽≦)O
Tumblr media
First years: Yui and Yuuki are in the same class. They even sit close to each other. Yuuki has quick metabolism that his stomach already rumbles in second period. Okumura… has quite a mood swing that his classmates have come to get used to and pay attention to (which I find hilarious).
Character Development.
Tumblr media
Haruno. Being a senpai really does wonders. This is the same Haruno who trips on air. She is able to encourage her kouhai and becomes a reliable manager in the absence of other managers. Looking at the reaction of the boys right there, she looks like on her way following Takako’s example (idol manager).
Tumblr media
Okumura. He starts to treat Eijun with less hostility and in exchange, Eijun feels more comfortable to talk with him. Eijun deal well with criticism, so Okumura’s blunt style is not really a problem, but it’s the hostility that he cannot deal well with. Although he still holds unfavorable image of Miyuki hahaha, honestly, I can imagine Miyuki genuinely complimenting Okumura, only for Okumura to take it wrong, as it is noted above. It’s just he seems to put Miyuki in so much regard that he kinda forgets that Seidou has amazing pitchers to offer and to learn from. Though it’s not wrong for him to focus on improving himself first, like what he’s currently doing. It’s a similar approach with Eijun actually.
THE NOTES.
The notes deserves its own section. It’s really deep and insightful from Coach Kataoka.

Terajima’s birthday drawings for Miyuki!!!
2015:
When he’s so happy that he can’t stop talking. -Terajima
Miyuki’s birthday when he was a 3rd year in elementary school.
Miyuki: What the hell were you thinking leaving the presents and the cake so obviously on the table! I found them just as soon as I came back home! Also, this chocolate cake, we both don’t really like it, do we? Have you forgotten that we couldn’t eat it up last year? And this isn’t the glove I wanted, so I’m gonna go return it and get another one! I wanted a catcher’s glove!!!
Miyuki’s dad: Can I drink my beer…
Tumblr media
2016:
The day he got his first catcher’s glove. -Terajima
11/17 Miyuki’s birthday when he was a 1st year at junior high school.
Miyuki’s dad: Heey, what’s with the cake? Won’t you eat it?
Tumblr media
Bonus:
And now. -Terajima
Koushuu: What? Birthday…? Does he have a birthday…?
Eijun: That’s a problematical statement, wolf boy!! What have you been thinking our captain is!??

Miyuki & Koushuu
I love the stark contrast between Koushuu and Miyuki.
their hair colour
their facial expressions
their attitude toward Eijun (Miyuki is quite tolerant towards Eijun and often teases him, while Koushuu is often annoyed by Eijun’s noisiness)
their perception of baseball (Miyuki enjoys playing baseball from the bottom of his heart, while Koushuu can’t enjoy it anymore because of that jackass coach)
and then, this:
Koushuu: comes from a rich family (I bet his dad is a banker, doctor or lawyer), lives in a *big, modern house, his mom is there and prepares breakfast/lunch/dinner for him (*note: this is quite a big house if you consider the fact they live in Tokyo.)
Tumblr media
and Miyuki: has no mom, his father owns a small factory, lives in a narrow, typically Japanese house and he used to have to cook his own food when he was a child… (ノД`)・゜・。
Tumblr media
Ahhhhhhh, they are so different, yet I love them both so much…!! (´;ω;`)
Bonus:
As for the cuteness of little!Miyuki and little!Koushuu…
Tumblr media
I’d say it’s a draw.
Edit:
A Japanese fan just pointed out another contrast between them and I’m laughing so hard at it XD
Koushuu: is very direct and straight when he praises Eijun
Miyuki: uses poems to praise Eijun (lol)

Terajima-sensei tweets, ‘A Sawamura-san who receives congratulations from many people.’
Second image: 15th May - Sawamura-senpai’s Birthday Sawamura: Ahahaha! Yay! I’m seventeen!! Everybody, thank you everybody!
Terajima-sensei tweets, ‘Somehow, the rough sketch ended up being close to Okumura’s imagination that I’m laughing here too. Sawamura-san, recently your performance has gone beyond surprising me to the extent that it feels like you’ve slapped me, telling me not to underestimate you. I’m sorry for not being able to draw a decent picture even though it’s your birthday, so please slap me again.’
