Able bodied people obsess over a cure for touretts and tic disorders, but shifting solutions for Touretts on to Tourettic people is not okay. Systematic Change over individual change any day.

remind that no matter how 'severe' or 'mild' your tics are, its normal for them to sometimes be worse and other times barely noticeable!
its apart of the tics/tourettes phenomenon called "waxing and waning" and if anything, should make you feel more validated in your diagnosis <3

Tfw you don’t tic for most of the day and then you randomly whistle or something and it’s like “What was That? Where did that come from?” And then you remember you have the disorder

Shout out to people who do fit the stereotypes for their disorders. The symptoms that are deemed ‘wrong’ and ‘incorrect’ by most of social media. You exist and that is okay.

I watched The Road Within yesterday and as someone with Tourettes- this movie means so much to me. The main character in this movie is the most accurate and realistic acting portrayal of tourettes I’ve seen on screen, Robert Sheehan is amazing. So many of his motor tics are ones I have myself and I just really saw myself represented, which I never see on screen. I don’t see a ton of characters with Tourettes to begin with, and then often whenever it does happen, it’s mostly always just used for one-off comedic relief in film and tv. “Haha look at the freak who swears uncontrollably and insults people haha.” The character of Vincent had coprolalia, and he did have some tics that could be funny (because that’s real) but the disorder was not just used as a comedic tool. In fact in the very first scene we see the very real distress that unwanted involuntary tics can cause, and he tics things that in other movies/shows would be used as comedy, like ticcing about the priest being a pedophile, it is not framed as a funny thing. We see Vincent’s discomfort and distress and him trying very hard to suppress his tics, and we feel for him and feel (at least, I felt) upset at the people around him who are judging him and whispering. But they also don’t just make Vincent a pity parade where we just feel bad about the poor little disabled guy. He is a competent person, he is not infantilized, he can make friends and has a personality and humor and is a multidimensional character- he is not defined solely by his tourettes. It just makes me really happy to see myself represented, which is why I want to be a filmmaker/writer, because I want to show more people like me to other people like me who need to feel seen

Was very brave and did my best to not suppress my tics on the public bus today. It was luckily a pretty chill tic day, so no one noticed. I tend to subconsciously suppress in public (especially when I’m by myself), so I count this as progress :)
Reminder that you’re allowed to tic in public, you’re allowed in public just as much as anyone else

Are you normal about people who tic slurs they can’t reclaim. Hell are you normal about people who tic slurs period.
People cannot control what they tic, don’t act like they can.

The same people who laugh at my tics laugh at those weird fill in the blank games. Where you're asked for random words and then you read the story and it sounds stupid.

Like if you laugh at my tics, you love these games

Remember to be radical about how you advocate for you tics.
504s and other accommodations drag us along, not lift us up. Systems should be built for us, we are not an after thought, say fuck you to
-capitalism
-inaccessible transit
-And after thought "suck it up" treatments for tic disorders
And so many more things. Systems advocate for able bodied people every day, it's time to do it for us too.

I keep seeing nerotypicals talk about "cureing touretts syndrome"
But like I don't need a cure, what I actually need is
-People to be educated
-special acomadations
-more accessable infrastructure
-Acseptance
-Money and flexible jobs
those are all things nerotypicals can do to help me now, but they don't want me to have those things.
I feel like they only want a "cure" because it's the only situation in which they don't have to do anything.

Slightly more active tic day today. Have already fallen on my knees, screamed more times than I can count, activated the Alexa by saying “red alert”, and threw dried cherries at the cat.
It’s gonna be a long day
