When I first saw Aerith during the opening sequence of Final Fantasy VII, I knew she was going to play an important role. Aerith appeared very interesting and mysterious when I first saw her face emerged in mako. Shortly after, we see the âLovelessâ sign above Aerith, which was my first clue she was going to play not only a large role throughout Final Fantasy VII, but a romantic role, as well.Â
The entire opening sequence of Final Fantasy VII, from Aerith appearing underneath the âLovelessâ sign, to Cloud jumping from the train, was meant to set Cloud Strife and Aerith Gainsborugh up as ill-fated, star-crossed lovers.Â
When Cloud bought a flower from Aerith, I was very intrigued. I remember thinking, âThatâs the girl from the beginning!â â I was curious about her. Why does she keep appearing?
My first impression was that Aerith was a ray of light and hope in a city full of despair, pain, and misery. Aerith provided a juxtaposition to Midgar, especially because she was selling flowers â something rarely found in Midgar. I remember when she was walking away from Cloud and I tried to follow her and talk to her, but obviously that didnât work XD However, Squaresoft succeeded in their goal of making Aerith a very mysterious and very intriguing love interest for Cloud.Â
Then, when Cloud falls through the roof of Aerithâs Church and is saved by her flower bed, we really start getting to know the âFlower Girl.â Aerith was able to grow flowers in a city that wasnât able to produce them. She also had a materia she didnât know how to use [yet], which was our first clue it was the key to unlocking a power beyond anyoneâs comprehension.Â
From the beginning, Cloud was attracted to Aerith. Cloud was willing to protect Aerith from the Turks by becoming her bodyguard in exchange for a romantic date â the typical beginning of a love story. I almost felt as though Cloud was acting exactly how I would have acted!Â
We also know from Squaresoft that Cloud was instantly attracted to Aerithâs âimpressiveâ eyes and smile, and had a âmysteriousâ feeling after buying a flower from her. I canât say the same for Cloud and Tifaâs first interaction in Final Fantasy VII, which is a common theme I see throughout the compilation â Tifa has to do so much work to attract Cloudâs attention, whereas Aerith just inherently has his attention.
Shortly after a romantic date is agreed to between Cloud and Aerith, Cloud begins to laugh and flirt with Aerith. The entire sequence of events from Cloud falling to Aerithâs Church, visiting Aerithâs house, sharing a date in the park, and dressing up as a girl, was meant to set these two ill-fated lovers up for the ultimate tragedy facing star-crossed lovers. All of this was a clue to me that Aerith was the girl Cloud was after. And although I knew Tifa liked Cloud, I never got the feeling Cloud really liked Tifa, or at least not as much as he liked Aerith.Â
When both ladies are present, Cloudâs preference is clearly towards Aerith. And even after Cloud becomes his ârealâ self, he still shows preference towards Aerith and remains heartbroken over her. The ârealâ Cloud remembers Aerith often, consistently longs for her presence, and associates his Promised Land [his âsupreme happinessâ] with Aerith at the end of Final Fantasy VII â all of which is based on the memories they created during disc 1.Â
Another thing I noticed was Cloud starting to act differently after he fell through the roof of Aerithâs Church â he started joking around, showing care for another person besides himself, and he even started laughing. Aerith seemed to bring out a rare, happy side in Cloud â making him more than a one-dimensional character. Up until meeting Aerith, we only saw Cloudâs emo-jerk behavior. And even if that behavior was an âact,â Aerith was the only character able to stop Cloud from putting up this act due to his genuine feelings for her. No one could have convinced Cloud to dress up like a girl except for Aerith, and thatâs a fact!
I also remember thinking Aerith was attracted to Cloud because he initially reminded her of Zack. Thatâs only natural. But we all know Aerith eventually falls in love with Cloud Strife for who *HE* is â one only needs to read official Square Enix quotes and watch Cloud and Aerithâs canon Gold Saucer date to discover this. Aerith loves Cloud for Cloud and she also loves Cloud more than Zack. I also think Aerith saw someone in Cloud who could protect her. And as someone who was running from danger her entire life, thatâs a very normal thing to seek.Â
Not only did Aerith represent a ray of light, hope, and life within the city of Midgar:
âThey say you canât grow grass and flowers in Midgar. But for some reason, the flowers have no trouble blooming here.â
But she also evoked a side in Cloud we hadnât seen yet.
Aerithâs energy, aura, personality, and special abilities touched everything around her in a positive way â especially Midgar and her bodyguard, Cloud Strife.Â
Not only is Aerith an extremely unique character because she is the last remaining Cetra and possesses special abilities, she is also a very endearing character. Your sense of empathy grows for her as the story of Final Fantasy VII unfolds.
The opening scene of Final Fantasy VII shows Aerith looking at an unknown mystical energy. She then proceeds to walk underneath a sign that reads âLovelessâ. From that moment on I knew she was going to be a captivating and mysterious character that possessed a power far beyond anyoneâs comprehension.
After the opening sequence, you randomly meet Aerith and have the opportunity to buy a flower from her. When I first played the game, I was completely intrigued by her and wondered: âWhy do I keep seeing this flower lady?â â âWhy is she so mysterious and beautiful?â â âWhatâs her story?â
âŠand when I finally heard her story, it lived up to everything I had imagined, and moreâŠ
When you encounter her next she essentially saves your life. Her ability to grow flowers in Midgar helped cushion your fall. And I remember being so happy to see her again so I could find out more about her.
I particularly love that right when you formally meet her she is tending to her flowers â the only life that seems to grow in Midgar. At that very moment her character seemed so full of magic and positive energy â a ray of hope in a city full of despair. And her positivity never fades as the game progresses, even in the hardest of times. She always remained spunky, sassy, and optimistic. Her personality is sorely missed once she is taken from us. A void that is never filled again. Things just donât feel the same once her presence is gone.Â
And as you get to know more about her she becomes an extremely complex and compelling character. When she told Cloud her materia was good for âabsolutelyâ nothing, I knew that she held a power far beyond anyoneâs comprehension. You also find out that her Mother and Father died when she was very young. And you also learn about the wonderful relationship she had with her adoptive mother, Elmyra. I love how Elmyra explained Aerithâs childhood and tells everyone about the magical abilities Aerith has. Truly one of my favorite scenes in the entire game.
The flashbacks of Aerithâs childhood was when I decided she was my favorite character in the game. For exampleâŠI loved when Elmyra explained how Aerith wasnât sad anymore because she knew her Mother had returned to the planet. Or when Aerith told Elmyra: âPlease donât cryâŠSomeone dear to you has just diedâŠHis spirit was coming to see you, but he already returned to the planetâ â and then it was revealed through a letter that Elmyraâs husband was killed. Such a sad yet touching and beautiful moment.
Aerith always remained optimistic despite all the struggles she encountered during her short life. From having to deal with her parents deaths, to Shinra constantly chasing her, she always remained hopeful.
And yetâŠshe had a predetermined destiny and responsibility by being the last remaining Cetra. She sacrificed herself to save everyone, and is the true hero of Final Fantasy VII in my eyes.
Her story has always been tragic, yet she never let it bring her spirits down. Aerith will always have a special place in my heart, and Iâm truly grateful that such an amazing piece of music accompanies her character. I can always play her musical theme and remember what a wonderful and touching character she isâŠ
âIâll be going now. Iâll come back when itâs all over.â ~Aerith, her last words
Clerith Week | Day 1 |Â When did you start shipping Clerith?
When I first saw Aerithâs face appear during the opening sequence of the game, I knew she was the heroine of Final Fantasy VII:Â
Aerith was the very first character we were introduced to, solidifying her importance in the minds of gamers everywhere. Seeing Aerith first made sense considering the official Yoshitaka Amano artwork pairing her with Cloud:
If any character was to be given the opening scene besides the hero, it would have to be the heroine: Aerith Gainsborough.Â
Furthermore â Cloudâs wallpaper graces the cover of Final Fantasy VII, while Aerithâs wallpaper graces the outside of the gaming manual:
From the physical game itself â Cloud and Aerithâs official wallpapers being used for the cover & gaming manual, to the official Yoshitaka Amano artwork, to the opening sequence where Aerith is given the spotlight, it becomes clear Squaresoft was intentionally setting Cloud and Aerith up to be tragic, star-crossed lovers from the very beginning stages of development.Â
The hero and heroine of Final Fantasy VII: Cloud Strife & Aerith Gainsborough â the Bodyguard & the Flower Girl.
Felix Liu:
âYoung, beautiful, and somewhat mysterious, Aerith met Cloud while selling flowers on the streets of Midgar.â
~Final Fantasy VII Gaming Manual
Squaresoft succeeded in portraying Aerith as âmysterious.â The very first moment we see her is when she is immersed in a mysterious green-like energy, which we later discover is Mako â the Planetâs lifestream. Questions I remember thinking were: What hidden power does she possess? Why is she so important? Aerith seemed like a ray of light in a city of despair.Â
Then, shortly after blowing up the first reactor, we finally meet this âbeautifulâ Flower Girl underneath a sign reading âLOVELESSâ:
Aerithâs beauty was highlighted in the official gaming manual. As a gamer, this signaled to me that Aerith was meant to catch Cloudâs romantic attention. I thought maybe she was âLOVELESSâ no more now that she had met Cloud. Quickly, I bought the flower from her â hoping to woo her. Something Cloud was clearly aiming to do in canon:Â
Cloud Strife:
âHere I met a Flower Girl.
Sheâs a girl with impressive eyes.
Sheâs around my age, or elder by one or two years.
But the innocent radiance in her eyes simply makes her suddenly look younger.
Aerith Gainsborough: âExcuse me, what happened?â
She asked me the question, and then I bought a flower from her, which is rare in Midgar.
Maybe sheâs pleased that the flower was sold, because the worried look on her face had vanished.
If this smile costs only one gil, it is a good purchase.â
~Final Fantasy VII Dismantled; Square Enix
Shortly after experiencing love at first sight underneath a âLOVELESSâ sign, Cloud agrees to be Aerithâs bodyguard for the price of a romantic date â an agreement rooted in romance â an agreement foreshadowing the curse of star-crossed lovers. A bodyguardâs tragic curse.Â
âI think⊠I want to be forgiven⊠More than anything.â
âI never blamed you, not once. You came for me. Thatâs all that matters.â
Why I love Aerith Gainsborough â Flower Girl & last Ancient
Not only is Aerith an extremely unique character because she is an Ancient and possesses special abilities, but she is also a very endearing character. Your sense of empathy grows for her as the story of Final Fantasy VII unfolds.

Aerith is the true hero of FFVII in my eyes.
Her story has always been tragic, yet she never let it bring her spirits down. Aerith will always have a special place in my heart, and Iâm truly grateful that such an amazing piece of music accompanies her character. I can always play her musical theme and remember what a wonderful and touching character she isâŠ
âThen, Iâll be going now. Iâll come back when itâs all over.â âš~Aerith; her last words
In all my years of being a fan of Final Fantasy VII, I never realized the polarizing nature surrounding the debate about who Cloud loves more: Aerith or Tifa?
Whatâs clear to me is that Squaresoft wanted Aerith to be the heroine of FFVII from the very beginning. The opening scene of the game revolves around Aerith, with the âLOVELESSâ sign appearing above her. The juxtaposition of Aerith walking the streets of Midgar, with Cloud simultaneously jumping from the train, sets these two up as the primary characters & love interests of FFVII.
Star-crossed lovers. Their destiny & fates intertwined. Soulmates.
The creators of FFVII have stated that Aerith, Barret, and Cloud were the original three characters created for the game. This confirms that Squaresoft always intended Aerith to be the central female character & love interest for Cloud. Just look at the original & official artwork Squaresoft produced â itâs all of Cloud and Aerith together.
Let us also remember: Aerith is both the FIRST & LAST character we see in the entire game. In addition â Aerith was one of the ORIGINAL three characters created for FFVII. This confirms that Cloud and Aerith were meant to be together from the very beginning. The ORIGINAL hero & heroine.
Since 1997, I have always felt Cloud and Aerith were meant to be together. After finding Aerith looking beautiful under the âLOVELESSâ sign, Cloud agrees to be Aerithâs bodyguard for the promise of one date. When Tifa asks Cloud to join AVALANCE, he only did so when Barret promised him more money. See the difference?
While Cloud was growing up, him and Tifa were childhood acquaintances â not friends or lovers. Tifa ignored Cloud when they were kids, allowed her friends to bully him, and excluded him (just like she did in the morning at Seventh Heaven during the Remake). As kids, Cloud and Tifa only had one conversation â a conversation Cloud doesnât even remember. During this conversation, Cloud makes a friendly promise to Tifa â a promise Tifa begged Cloud to make (ie: âSTRONG-ARMEDâ) â hardly a childhood romance. Meanwhile, Cloud and Aerith were both two lonely kids destined to meet and complete each other.
The facts are: Cloud only laughs and cries for one character in the entire game: Aerith. This suggests his emotional connection to Aerith is deeper than his emotional connection to Tifa. Even Tifa picks up on this, which leads her to having a jealous meltdown in the Shinra jail cells where she witnesses Cloud and Aerith developing their own âWORLDâ together.
When Aerith dies, Cloud exclaims: âMy fingers are tingling. My mouth is dry. My eyes are burning!â It is officially stated that Cloudâs âHEARTâ breaks when Aerith dies.
Even after Aerith dies, Cloud seeks the Promise Land so he can reunite with her. At the end of FFVII, Cloud exclaims: ââŠI think Iâm beginning to understand. An answer from the planetâŠthe Promised Land⊠I think I can meet her⊠thereâŠâ â anyone who doesnât think Cloud is referring to Aerith is either an idiot or being purposely disingenuous. Furthermore, this quest for the Promise Land and search for Aerith (by Cloud only) is also included in numerous material Squaresoft has released since FFVII (ie: Final Fantasy Tactics, etc., etc.)
Furthermore, Cloud thought it was Aerith reaching down for him during the end of FFVII. It was ultimately Tifa who was reaching for Cloud, but his heart wanted it to be Aerith. See? Aerith is #1. Tifa is #2. That is how it has been from Day 1.
Even in Advent Children, Cloud is shown to be distant & cold towards Tifa while living in Aerithâs Church. If how Cloud acts toward Tifa, and where heâs living doesnât tell you where his true feelings lie, I donât know WHAT will.
Many Tifa supporters point to the VARIABLE Highwind scene as proof of Cloud and Tifaâs love. However, this scene doesnât prove anything and is pure speculation (not to mention VARIABLE). Even if sex did occur, does sex automatically mean love? And would this have even taken place if Aerith had lived?
The fact remains: Aerith is the only character Cloud comes close to revealing his true feelings for. In Cosmo Canyon, Cloud says to Aerith: âBut, Iâm âI meanâ weâre here for you, right?â
...the reason Cloud comes close to revealing his true feelings for Aerith is because of the wonderful chemistry & love the two have for one another.
Those that say Aerith was meant for Zack are also mistaken. Aerith states that she recognizes Cloud is different than Zack, saying to Cloud, âBut youâre different. Things are differentâŠâ â Aerith loved Cloud for who he was and recognized that the past was the past.
Aerith also states in the OG that she wasnât in a serious relationship with Zack, and that he was a real ladies man who probably moved on to someone else.
During Cloudâs and Aerithâs Golden Saucer date, Aerith confirms that although she initially liked Cloud because of Zack, she has grown to like Cloud for Cloud.
Finally â the official commercial approved & released by Squaresoft states: âA story of a love that could never beâŠâ â obviously referring to Cloud and Aerithâs tragic star-crossed romance. This is also the official FFVII tagline.
Cloti supporters can dispute this all they want, but the official commercial (approved by Squaresoft) includes the word âLoveâ during the scene when Cloud holds Aerith in his arms. I need no more proof than this.
But if all this still doesnât convince you, just go back and look at the official Amano artwork. 5 pieces exclusively of Cloud & Aerith together â the canon couple.
Iâll end with this...
Cait Sith:
âLooks good. You are perfect for each other!â
âAerithâs star and Cloudâs star! They show a great future!â
You can claim Cait Sith isnât always accurate with his predictions, but this was an obvious attempt by Squaresoft to further illustrate that Cloud and Aerith are meant to be.
âPoor Tifa!â ~Cait Sith
