We are NOT all immigrants
After attending several marches protesting the 45′s muslim ban, I found there was one chant that really bothered me. But before I continue I must say that I am truly heartened by the numbers of people getting out in the streets and fighting for what is right, because that is the only way the world can change. That said, hearing “We are all immigrants.” over and over again did bother me. To begin with, we are NOT all immigrants. There were people living on this land long before the europeans arrived. There were also many people who were brought here against their will. There is no question that we live in a time of inequality, and we must fight for the rights of those who are suppressed. At this moment a corporation is doing all it can to put a pipeline through sacred native land and our government helping with militarized police; people stand before them and they stand behind tanks with airplanes flying overhead. And the government has shown again and again the that police can kill an unarmed person without consequence - just as long as that person is black.
So while we fight one injustice let us not forget the others - and there are many - let us be a voice for all those who cannot speak. And remember that the best way to keep history from repeating itself is to refuse to forget.
